Spam On The Up, Culprits Revealed
You’d be forgiven for thinking that there’s not nearly as much spam mail around as there used to be; these days most Inboxes manage to remain relatively clear of posts offering to enlarge your this and cure your that. Any thought that these ‘companies’ have grown bored of trying to drum up interest by cold calling in such ways should be dismissed though, as the reason we’re seeing less of it is simply because just about all email services now automatically filter junk mail for you somewhere along the line. Most are quite varied in how effective they are in this area, and in the case of ISPs, a survey by ClearMyMail has revealed the most effective filterers in the UK as well as identifying the UK and America as main sources of spam emails. Orange comes out as the worst culprit, with almost 97% of email that ends up in customer Inboxes being spam. BT customers see a figure of 89% and Tiscali was at 82%. In Orange’s defence it argues that it is intentionally lax with filtering, instead choosing to simply label mail as potential spam and send it through to help prevent blocking of potentially important emails. These figures still sound pretty shocking, though many consumers will likely have additional filters that remove mail locally, such as those on offer from security suites and related software. What’s most interesting is that spam is still on the rise in a big way, in fact the amount of blocked spam mail has quadruped in the last three months, so it’s clear that spam is certainly still thriving, we just don’t get to see it as often. - Paul Lester [ClearMyMail] spam email internet
