Samsung Unveils Whopping 64Gb Flash Chip
I laugh now at a time when I thought 16Mb of Ram in an early PC I owned was just about as hot as things could get.
Today, Samsung has taken the wraps off a new kind of NAND Flash chip with a massive 64Gb of storage, opening a whole raft of opportunities for new kinds of portable music/movie players, laptops, portable storage devices and imaging gadgets.
The company is planning to create a new memory card that can combine two of these to offer 128GB of storage, which in real terms is up to 80 DVD movies or 32,000 MP3 tracks. Samsung claimed:
“The flash memory device represents a major leap forward in the move to higher density flash storage solutions at a time of exploding demand for flash as the main storage medium in computing and digital applications.”
Don’t hold your breath though - production will not begin until 2009.-Martin Lynch
