New Tomtom Service Offers Official Map Updates For New Roads

If you’re a fan of in-car GPS you probably know that when it comes to the latest features and cutting edge technologies, TomTom takes some beating. Usually the first to weave a new convenience into a handheld, its latest announcement promises to keep you bang up to date with new roads and points of interest. The new Map Update Service offers map downloads to TomTom users via its free desktop software, with new versions coming once a quarter for the duration of a user’s subscription. On average a map release includes thousands of miles of new road and points of interest (POIs) and to make sure you get all of these the first time you use one, TomTom says that if you buy a new device and a new map becomes available within 30 days you’ll get it for free. Existing users will point out that the company’s MapShare service, which allows people to make road corrections themselves and then offer to others to download for free, already covers this area quite well. It seems as though this will now be seen as an interim fix between Map Update Service downloads though, with the appeal here being that they’ve been officially verified by Tele Atlas. Prices will start at £7.95 per quarter depending on what model of GPS you have and the current map version. - Paul Lester [TomTom] TomTom GPS cars
