More Net-Hopefulls Want A Piece Of Google Pie

We’re hard pushed not to think that trying to crack the search engine market is a project that’s doomed to failure, but that doesn’t seem to stop people trying. Google’s ex-employees are trying to do just that with the recently reported Cuil search and someone else is having a go now in the form of Wikia Search. Jimmy Wales, the founder of Wikipedia, is behind the latest effort, citing his reasons as the fact that people are concerned about big boys like Google and Yahoo dominating the search market. Personally we couldn’t give two hoots if this market is dominated or not provided we get accurate results quickly and there are no hidden agendas, but then that’s just us. Unfortunately he’s not off to a good start with Wikia Search either, since it’s an ‘open’ platform in that it doesn’t use the ‘black boxes’ that help other search engines protect themselves against false site marketing and spam. Results will also be dependant on how many users it has, which should set the engine off to a particularly bad start unless it can miraculously persuade millions of people to get involved at once, at which point we’ll be able to see how good it actually is. Still, give it a whirl for yourself and see what you think. It’s minimalist, as seems to be the style of the time and results are pretty quick. It doesn’t offer the kind of visual impact that made Cuil a bit different though and if we were gambling types we’d bet this will be confined to the wayside pretty sharpish. - Paul Lester [Yahoo] search engine google wikipedia
