Mitsubishi Confirms 3D Screens For 2008

At this year’s CES Mitsubishi unveiled some quite stunning looking Laser TVs , and we now have some more details on the 3D angle it touched on at the time. A new range of Plasma-based 3DTVs is set to be launched later this year and they sound far more promising than anaglyph displays, which simply layer cyan and blue colours to produce a fuzzy, and vaguely 3D, image. The new screens will require circularly polarized glasses, similar to those you might have seen at Imax cinemas, and allows the screen to superimpose two images over each other while avoiding the fuzz problem and offering a far more convincing image. While it’s not ideal to have to wear a pair of specs while watching a film, provided the effect is dramatic enough we think it’ll add decent impact to titles from companies like Pixar or the excellent Beowulf, which you can already watch in pseudo-3D if you buy the Blu-ray disc. The new screens will be available in 73″, 65″ and 60″ sizes and will also be able to handle 3D games through a partnership with NVidia. There are only a few titles available at the moment that are compatible, but if successful it’ll like follow Beowulf’s example by offering 3D versions on HD discs. Unfortunately the screen sizes available coupled with the uniqueness of the technology means that the price of these things is likely to be astronomical, so it’ll probably be quite a while before anyone who isn’t a celebrity or a footballer is willing to shell out. - Paul Lester [TechRadar] 3DTV Plasma Mitsubishi
