LEGO Scanner: And Why Not?
The seemingly limitless uses for LEGO continues today with this ingenious LEGO Scanner. Created by Anders Søborg, this is an NXT image scanner - a standalone scanner - that can scan and save images as BMP files in the NXT’s flash memory. Images can be saved as 24-bit colour, 8-bit colour or gray scale using the HiTechnic colour sensor or light sensor, respectively. There’s even a small LCD scanner that allows you to choose and view the properties for the scan. Søborg describes the scanning process after the jump and there’s some cool photos too.”Each line of the image is created by moving the sensor over the image at a constant speed while recording the position and corresponding sensor values with a fixed sample rate. The recorded data is then processed to make up one line of the image. The line is saved to the BMP-file and the scanner will feed the paper so the next line can be scanned. This will be repeated until the entire image has been scanned. The image processing time between each line depends on the colour depth and of course the width of the image. The current status and time of the scan is printed on the screen as shown on the image - this is a screen shot from the mario scan. Once the scanning is completed the image can be downloaded to the PC using Bricx Command Center or a similar tool.” OK, it’s not the fastest scanner in the world but it is a pleasure to watch and probably a lot of fun for hobbyists to build. Find out how here. If you want less of a challenge, but still a lot of fun, you can always opt for the LEGO Robot Dinosaurs.-Martin Lynch [Make] gadgets lego fun
