Australia’s ISPs Speak Out Against Filtering

Friday, October 31st, 2008

daria42 writes “The leaders of three of Australia’s largest internet service providers — Telstra Media’s Justin Milne, iiNet’s Michael Malone and Internode’s Simon Hackett — have, in video interviews with ZDNet.com.au over the past few months, detailed technical, legal and ethical reasons why ISP-level filtering won’t work. Critics of the policy also say that users will have no way to know what’s being filtered.”

Motorola Moving to Android, Windows Mobile for Smartphones

Friday, October 31st, 2008

nerdyH writes “Motorola will ditch its MotoMAGX Linux stack and UIQ Symbian stack in favor of Google’s Android Linux/Java stack and Windows Mobile 6.5 and 7, it announced today. The news comes after five years selling millions of Linux phones in Asia, and after a year during which many of Motorola’s top US phones used the homegrown Linux stack. Motorola’s current Linux phones in the US include the RAZR2 v8, E8, EM30, U9, Z̐, and Z̑.” This also comes alongside news that Motorola’s financial hardships are causing them to cut 3,000 jobs. It also puts into perspective their recent plans to hire hundreds of Android developers.

Magnetic Portals Connect Sun and Earth

Friday, October 31st, 2008

MaxwellEdison writes “Scientists have discovered evidence of magnetic portals connecting the Earth and the Sun every 8 minutes. ‘Several speakers at the Workshop have outlined how FTEs form: On the dayside of Earth (the side closest to the sun), Earth’s magnetic field presses against the sun’s magnetic field. Approximately every eight minutes, the two fields briefly merge or “reconnect,” forming a portal through which particles can flow. The portal takes the form of a magnetic cylinder about as wide as Earth. The European Space Agency’s fleet of four Cluster spacecraft and NASA’s five THEMIS probes have flown through and surrounded these cylinders, measuring their dimensions and sensing the particles that shoot through.”

Watch Two TV Programs at Once on Same TV!

Friday, October 31st, 2008

hdtv_new_3-d_tv.jpg It sounds like an offer out of the back of a comic book, but Texas Instruments (TI), the maker of the DLP Cinema chip, is developing technology that might make it possible to watch two programs on one TV at the same time.

The company recently outlined some of its early developments that use 3-D technology for home entertainment at the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers Technical Conference and Exhibition in Hollywood, CA.

One development, which TI expects to begin to preview at year’s end, is processing technology that if incorporated in a third-party home entertainment system could allow for 2-D, 3-D or “dual view mode” on the same TV. Dual view mode, similar to 3-D, combines two images, but they are two different images.

Yes, and you can expect to wear special glasses, too …

Windows Azure Offers Developers Iron-Clad Lock-in

Friday, October 31st, 2008

snydeq writes “Microsoft’s move to the cloud is certain to create a whole new kind of developer partner, Fatal Exception’s Neil McAllister writes. But as much as Microsoft ISVs will likely go along with the shift to Windows Azure to keep revenue streams going, the kind of lock-in they will experience will be worlds away from what they face today. Rather than being able to ignore the new version of a key framework, developers will have no other option than to update their code to suit Microsoft’s latest platform. That kind of lock-in will leave customers in the lurch, subject to their vendors′ bottom lines, as ISVs that can’t afford to rework code to keep up with Microsoft’s latest platform will begin dropping services, and customers will have little choice but to accept the new terms of service their vendors send along.”

ASUS and Intel Launch Collaborative PC Design Site

Friday, October 31st, 2008

Jupix writes “There’s an interesting new community by ASUS and Intel called WePC. It enables anyone to post their dream PC including not only function, but form as well. You can draw up your dream and describe it in words, and also fiddle with some predetermined properties. No doubt the two companies are looking for common configurations so they can implement them in future products, but according to the press release, even individual designs may get the two companies’ backing.”

Report: Asus Plans $199 Eee PC

Friday, October 31st, 2008

Asus plans to launch a $200 or less Eee PC in 2009, DigitTimes reported Friday, citing comments made by Asus executives. Sound familiar? They might. That was the price that Asus originally announced for the Eee PC, only to raise it to $299 when it launched in the U.S. a few months later.

Reducing the price will also mean a corresponding decrease in cost. Will Asus find a way to reduce its component cost, or will it use its higher-priced models to offset the price of the cheaper model? I would suspect the former, although what features Asus plans to trim are unknown. My guess: Asus is banking that the price of DVD drives will fall further, praying that DRAM prices will remain near the bottom of the barrel, and will cut out Windows entirely.

X-Orcism Plugin

CDM points out this free Halloween themed effect for VST/AU compatible audio software. You can download the plugin from Solid State Logic’s site (free reg required). Nice to see the neighbors aren’t the only ones giving out free treats.

It’s basically a pitch-shift + vibrato + wind noise + eco/reverb combo … which means it’s fun -

Google Sheds Light On ‘Dark Web’ With PDF Search

Friday, October 31st, 2008

CWmike writes “Google this week took another step in its effort to shed light on the so-called Dark Web, announcing that its search engine can now search scanned documents in a PDF. In April, Google announced that it was looking for ways for its search engine to index HTML forms such as drop-down boxes or select menus that otherwise couldn’t be found or indexed.” An announcement is available at the official Google blog, and it contains some demonstration searches.

Multi-Channel Election Night Coverage

Friday, October 31st, 2008

If one channel just enough during election season, Dish Network is offering a mosiac channel with six simultaneous feeds of news channels.

It started Tuesday, Oct. 28, and will run through Nov. 7.

For those 11 days, you can turn to Channel 100 and catch Fox News Channel, CNN, MSNBC, CNN Headlines News, C-SPAN and C-SPAN 2.

(At least the remote control will get some rest …)

Since May, Dish has offered Dish Decision 2008, an interactive application with news and information about the presidential candidates, plus state-by-state news, information and polling about congressional and gubernatorial races.

Dish rival DirecTV is also offering an Election Day mosaic channel, in this case an eight-channel offering called Election Mix.

Thanks to TV Technology.

Steam Powered reaching pressure

Friday, October 31st, 2008

I’m here in Sunnyvale, CA to cover Steam Powered, the first dedicated steampunk convention. Set-up is now underway. The local San Jose freebie, Metro, ran a nice cover piece on the event and steampunk 101. That’s Abney Park on the cover. The article emphasized the maker aspects of the genre and the non-serious roleplaying involved. I.e. it’s fun to make beautifully-crafted, ornamented retro-futuristic gadgets and to pretend they came from some parallel universe that mashes up appealing aspects of past, present, and future.

Some things I’m looking forward to at the convention are Chris Garcia’s talk on the replica of Charles Babbage’s Difference Engine, currently on display at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, CA, presentations from the Weta Workshop folks (see their Moon Hater Death Ray below), learning more about Airship Ventures, and of course, seeing Abney Park perform on Saturday night at the San Jose Civic Auditorium (tickets for this show are still available). Also, MAKE pal and frequent blog-subject Jake von Slatt is delivering the keynote address at the con. Should be a fun weekend.

BTW: If you’re at the convention, please look me up. I′m staying at the hotel where the convention is happening (The Domain).

Wired has a piece, Ray-Gun Maestro Zaps Steampunk Convention, on Greg Broadmore of Weta Workshop and his participation at Steam Powered.
