Nokia’s 5800 XpressMusic to mature markets: see you in 2009

Monday, October 6th, 2008

Filed under:

The Foundations said it best in their 1968 classic, but seriously, why let us down like this? Nokia didn’t mind busting out a litany of press shots and all the specifications one could need to get amped up about the 5800 XpressMusic, but it obviously has something holding it back from launching in “mature markets” before 2009. In an announcement that’s just as disappointing to the suits in Espoo as it is to those in North America and Down Under (just to name a couple), we’ve now learned that the touchscreen-dominated handset will only be available in seven countries in Asia, the Middle East and Europe before 2009 dawns. Even worse? Not knowing how deep into next year we’ll have to wait for this thing here in the US of A. Catch our feelings spelled out in video form after the break.

Nokia’s 5800 XpressMusic phone intimately detailed on video

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008

If you′ve been enjoying those still pictures of Nokia’s 5800 XpressMusic touchscreen phone, but feel you’re lacking an in-depth experience, we think we can help. A slew of demo and instruction videos have just been slapped up on the Ovi Share site, allowing you to get a better idea of just how the device works, and what it looks like when it’s doing it. Luckily for you, we’ve taken the trouble of including all of the videos after the break for your viewing pleasure, saving you the painful and laborious experience of hitting a read link. Enjoy.

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic hands-on

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008

She’s arrived at last, the 5800 XpressMusic, Nokia’s tardy entry into the (modern) touchscreen phone space, and we’ve gotten some quality face time with the device. Appropriately nicknamed the Tube, the device has a number of Nokia peculiarities that could appeal to certain sensibilities, but probably won’t be taking a big bite out of existing touchphone market share — at least in the S60-phobic United States. Let’s dig in, shall we?

The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008

While it may not be Nokia’s first touchscreen phone (anyone out there remember the 7710?), the 5800 XpressMusic is certainly the first to come out of Finland with a mainstream appeal. What we’ve alternately known as the “Tube” throughout much of its development cycle is the first production device to run S60 5th Edition — the fourth major overhaul of Nokia’s ubiquitous smartphone platform since 2002 and the first to support fingers, styli, and high-res displays. Speaking of high-res displays, the 5800 comes equipped with an impressive 3.2-inch 640 x 360 resistive touchscreen to go along with its 3.2-megapixel autofocus cam, Carl Zeiss optics, dual LED flash, GPS, WiFi, 3.5mm jack, and a microSD slot with support for 16GB cards. It’ll be available in three versions — European HSDPA, North American HSDPA, and GSM only — and ships this quarter in black, red, and blue for €279 (about $392) unlocked with an 8GB card thrown in for good measure. Music fans with voracious appetites for new tunes might want to hold out, though, for the Comes With Music-equipped version that follows on “early next year” at a to-be-announced price.

Reuters: October 2nd is go for Nokia Tube launch

Friday, September 26th, 2008

Filed under:

October 2nd: mark it down ’cause Reuters says that’s the date that Nokia will launch its Nokia Tube — aka, 5800 XpressMusic. According to a pair of industry sources, Nokia will launch the much anticipated, long overdue, ₨ touchscreen device at a media and analyst event in London — exactly as Pocket-lint’s source told us earlier. All that’s left now is for the invites to be distributed.

Nokia 5800 Tube press shot leaks into the wilds

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

One day after Google goes touchscreen, along comes what looks to be an official press shot of Nokia’s 5800 XpressMusic — aka, the Tube. No new details here, though Nokia appears to have cleaned up the industrial design around the buttons of some of those earlier prototypes we’ve seen. October 2nd looks like the date that we’ll finally get our fill of the first S60 Touch handset. Though given the number of leaks and rabid competition Nokia faces in the touchscreen OS space — our appetite for this device might be quickly satiated.

FCC wants to hear your voice on the MPAA’s latest DRM proposal

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

Last month you let us know in the comments how you felt about the MPAA’s latest effort to close the analog hole — by removing the FCC’s ban on selectable output control (SOC), giving them the ability to remotely disable the analog output on your cable box — now try telling someone who can actually do something about it. The FCC has opened the petition to public comment until June 25, and replies to comments by July 7. Currently, the MPAA is arguing that allowing SOC will actually hasten the digital transition, once it feels comfortable offering early release flicks on HD video-on-demand, people will have more incentive to upgrade their TV sets. Of course, owners of older HDTVs without HDMI connections or anyone else who’d rather use analog outs would be left in the dark, and Ars Technica notes the EFF and Home Recording Rights Coalition have already spoken out against the plan. Give the MPAA’s proposal a read then let the FCC know which side of the line you fall on before it’s too late.

Screen Grabs: Metal Gear Solid 4 gets iPod and Sony Ericsson product placement

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

Screen grabs chronicles the uses (and misuses) of real-world gadgets in today’s movies and TV. Send in your sightings (with screen grab!) to screengrabs at engadget dt com.

Though we’re breaking slightly from our typical Screen Grabs format (movies, TV), we could never live with ourselves if we didn’t share these shocking gadget appearances from Metal Gear Solid 4. That’s right, despite being on some kind of deadly spy mission, Solid Snake will find time to bro down with a fifth-generation iPod (above), while some lovely cohort of his dials up for pizza on a Sony Ericsson W62S clamshell. More pics after the break.

Pelican’s Metal Gear Solid 4 Bluetooth headset gets photographed

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

See there, we told you it was authentic. The hotly-anticipated Metal Gear Solid 4 BT headset is indeed more than a figment of your imagination, and IGN’s UK branch has the photographs to prove it. Granted, the actual unit you see above is a pre-production sample, but nothing about it is slated to change before finalized products ship en masse. No, you won’t magically become as phenomenal as Snake should you wrap this around your lobe, but you can get a decent idea if it’s your bag by peeking the high-resolution shots in the read link below.

Nike+ SportBand gets reviewed

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

Filed under:

For those breaking into a sweat trying to decide whether or not the Nike+ SportBand is really worth your hard earned dollars / euros / pounds / Schrutebucks, simmer on down. The runners over at the Stuff offices have snapped one up and tossed out their two pence. Summarized as a “Nike+iPod system without music,” the unit was given fairly high marks all around. It was noted that calibration was highly recommended before taking on the London Marathon, but that setup was a real lesson in simplicity. Design wise, most everything was kosher save for the detachable face (Link USB drive) that may not fit perfectly in slim laptops sitting flush on a table and the non-backlit display that proved difficult to see at night. Believe it or not, critics still found the SportBand to be a joy to use despite the aforesaid quirks, but given the drawbacks, we’d certainly recommend trying out a pal’s before throwing down for your own.

Nike+ going WiFi and 3G, headed to iPhone

Friday, April 11th, 2008

Stuff.tv is kicking back in Nike’s HQ at the moment and claims to have official word about Nike’s future plans with Apple. They say that the Nike+ system will be “definitely” extend beyond the iPod nano to support the relatively bulky iPhone and iPod touch. Interestingly, it will move beyond the proprietary RF link between the shoe module and nano adapter to take advantage of WiFi and eventually 3G. This of course leads to all kinds of speculation with regard to Apple’s “lifestyle companion” patent we showed you last month. 3G support would presumably allow for real-time coaching and uploads of your training activity (and tracking) through the Nike Plus website. So let’s see… cellphone (check), iPod (check), Internet device (check), handheld gaming (almost), and now a Nike lifestyle companion (could be).

Nike+ SportBand purchased early, unboxed for all to see

Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

Filed under:

Nah, it’s not April 10th just yet (in most of the world, at least), but one particular bloke managed to score one of Nike’s new SportBands at a London marathon exhibition today. The going rate on that side of the pond was &pound40 ($78), but we wouldn’t mind that dreadful exchange rate too much if you’re curious about eventual US pricing. Nevertheless, feel free to tap the read link to peep the unit fresh out of its packaging, but be forewarned, there aren’t any surprises.

[Thanks, Terry]

Luxim wants to brighten your block with ultra-powerful plasma lightbulbs

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

Filed under:

Sure, we all enjoy a Tic Tac from time to time, but what if that minty Tic Tac were also able to generate the same amount of light as an industrial LED? You probably wouldn’t want to ingest that, though according to the company Luxim — known to us for its work in the A/V world — you might want to stick it in a streetlight. Apparently, the company has created a micro-sized bulb that uses 250 watts of power, but outperforms a 400 watt LED. Gas inside the tiny bulb is electrified by a component called a puck, which heats the gas into plasma and produces light, allowing a sizable chunk of energy to become light rather than heat — thus the ultra-bright performance. Inside the mint-sized bulb the gas reaches 6000-degrees Kelvin — or about the surface temperature of the Sun — producing 140 lumens per watt, or roughly ten times that of a standard lightbulb. Really, it’s quite bright. Still, a Tic Tac would probably be more refreshing.

Pioneer isn’t abandoning Kuro plasma, expects same-quality panels from Matsushita

Saturday, March 8th, 2008

If you′re all broken up about Pioneer’s seeming exit of the plasma business, take heart. Pioneer Executive Vice President Russ Johnston claims Pioneer’s plans aren’t to abandon Kuro-quality plasma displays in any way. The move to an outside manufacturer (Matsushita, parent company of Panasonic) is designed to cut cost in plasma production, but Pioneer still plans to maintain its premium edge over competitors. “The number-one goal is to make sure we can maintain our differentiation,” said Russ, “and specifically our Kuro difference in the marketplace.” Apparently Pioneer will be still be responsible for the video circuit and processing, the color filter strategy and other such secret sauce, and the company is confident Matsushita can step up to the Pioneer level of panel production — even if it might involve sharing a few trade secrets along the way. Apparently Matsushita is slated to start providing the modules by 2009.
