Video: XM Radio’s XMp3 interface shown off

Monday, October 13th, 2008

Filed under:

We knew XM Radio’s XMp3 handheld was on sale and shipping, but if you’ve been holding back and patiently waiting for some live video action of the UI before biting, have a gander at this. One xzitony managed to acquire the new Pioneer-built device and take it for a spin, but rather than just keeping it all to himself, he decided to host up a six minute clip walking us through the user interface. There are just no words to express our gratitude, but you can leave your thanks on his YouTube page after peeping the vid just past the break.

[Thanks, Anthony]

Global IP Solutions Launches Video Calling for Windows Mobile Phones

Monday, October 13th, 2008

gips-video-engine-mobile.jpgToday, Global IP Solutions launched peer-to-peer video calling and multi-point video conferencing capabilities on Windows Mobile-based phones called GIPS VideoEngine Mobile. As part of this release, it only runs on specific Windows Mobile models, however, future plans for Symbian phones and iPhones as well as other Windows Mobile devices are planned.

Using GIPS VideoEngine Mobile, wireless carriers, application developers and mobile handset manufacturers can provide high-quality video calls, even under adverse network conditions. The company has partnered with Marvell Technology to ensure its media processing software provides the most advanced mobile phone features on the Marvell chipset and to highly optimize it for the XScale PXA310 devices including the Hewlett-Packard iPAQ series, Samsung’s SGH-𙴴 and Gigabyte’s GSmart MS808.

The software leverages GIPS expertise in packet loss as well as lip synchronization to ensure a good quality video experience. My only complaint about this launch is there is no beta software available for end users to try it. I realize GIPS sells/licenses the technology to mobile carriers, application developers, etc., but they should at least offer a limited “proof of concept” video softphone that end users can install and try. I wanted to tested it on my Windows Mobile, but alas it was not to be. Anyway, for more info head here www.gipscorp.com/mv

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 unboxed, played with on video

Monday, October 13th, 2008

Filed under:

Oh yeah, you’ve seen Sony Ericsson’s succulent XPERIA ͱ unboxed in still image form, but there’s just nothing like a little unpacking on video to really whet your appetite, right? Oh, and there’s also some comparison action thrown in with the HTC Touch Pro, and of course, we get to see the OS in action. Hop on past the break to have a look, but we’re warning you, those who covet easily will want to restrain themselves.

[Thanks, Oscar]

Sony Ericsson’s 8.1MP C905 Cyber-shot cellphone gets unboxed on video

Saturday, October 11th, 2008

Filed under:

Oh sure, you’ve seen the 8.1-megapixel C905 Cyber-shot in the wild and in our very own hands, but have you seen it unboxed entirely on video? No? Well, today’s your lucky day. Sony Ericsson’s shutterbug-of-a-cellphone is a touch on the thick side and doesn’t come with too many extras (you know, like a detachable zoom lens), but as SE always manages to do, it has delivered a pretty enviable beast all things considered. Have a look at the video after the break.

[Thanks, Gregg]

Nokia’s N85 films rooftop unboxing of another N85

Thursday, October 9th, 2008

Filed under:

We tell ya, these unboxers are really stepping up their game of late. Easily topping that trunk lid episode we saw back in July, this Nokia N85 unboxing sees one N85 film another N85’s initial escape from cardboard purgatory… from the roof of a building in New York City. There’s no real surprises here — just an twirled around on a video that’s almost entirely out of focus — and the absence of monologue is downright creepy. That said, we still highly recommend clicking through the break to see this puppy on video. Just bring your own tunes, you’ll need ‘em.

HTC’s Touch HD gets very early review, called an iPhone killer in German

Monday, October 6th, 2008

Filed under:

Not even a fortnight after HTC’s Touch HD went official in Germany, out pops a review from Deutschland calling it the best thing since sliced bread. Okay, so maybe our translation skills are a bit off, but one thing’s for sure — it was hailed as the first “iPhone killer to deserve that name.” Right off the bat, reviewers praised the TouchFLO 3D interface for masking Windows Mobile, and of course, the expansive display was drooled upon numerous times. Additionally, critics praised the Opera browser while scolding Internet Explorer, and while it’s hard to say for certain whether the battery life was remarkable, it definitely seemed to get their vote of approval. Of note, the 3.5-millimeter headphone jack was also loved, making us weep while thinking of what could have been with the T-Mobile G1. At any rate, it seems pretty clear that the Touch HD is going to rock some socks off, but we’re trying to push it out of our minds until it becomes available on this side of the drink. Too bad that approach isn′t working at all.

WowWee’s Rovio gets reviewed: it’s one awesome robotic sentry

Sunday, October 5th, 2008

Filed under:

WowWee goes out of its way to make one thing very clear about the Rovio: “this is not a toy.” That being said, it doesn′t make the patrolling sentry any less fantastic, as critics over at Robots-Dreams proclaimed that it was “intuitive and a pleasure to use from the moment you first open the box.” From the painless setup process to the unparalleled mobility, reviewers sounded like they were grinning from ear-to-ear during the entire writeup process. It performed its robotic sentry duties with vigor and valor, and the review crew couldn’t help but note that this bugger was “positioned to be the hottest robot for the upcoming holiday season, and for a long time to come.” In other words, if you’ve been on the fence about dropping three bills on this thing, all your worries about it potentially sucking just got thrashed.

If you’ve been enjoying those still pictures of Nokia’s 5800 XpressMusic touchscreen phone, but feel you′re lacking an in-depth experience, we think we can help. A slew of demo and instruction videos have just been slapped up on the Ovi Share site, allowing you to get a better idea of just how the device works, and what it looks like when it’s doing it. Luckily for you, we’ve taken the trouble of including all of the videos after the break for your viewing pleasure, saving you the painful and laborious experience of hitting a read link. Enjoy.

Screen Grabs: Fall Out Boy rails against product placement, enjoys the rewards of product placement

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

Filed under:

Screen grabs chronicles the uses (and misuses) of real-world gadgets in today′s movies and TV. Send in your sightings (with screen grab!) to screengrabs at engadget dt com.

In a rare twist of good luck, we’re able to bring you a very special Screen Grabs featuring both Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz and the Nokia 7610. Apparently, the band′s new video for the song I Don’t Care — which was heavily hyped by both label and artist for its multifarious cameos (Pharrell, Mark Hoppus, Spencer Pratt), and sharp lambaste of modern rock bands as “dudes wearing eyeliner and hawking energy drinks″ (AKA Fall Out Boy) — turned into something very different. According to Wentz on a now-removed blog post, the painstaking edit he worked on with director Alan Ferguson was jettisoned for an oddly product placement-filled extravaganza. In his words: “The version of the video that we worked on night after night is not the version that aired, yet somehow a cut full of glorious camera-phone shots did.” Luckily for us, a major blow to the band’s creative endeavors can be salvaged as another look at a piece of technology we know and certainly love. Video after the break, volume most definitely optional.

Video: game consoles stored in Gamestop bathroom

Sunday, September 28th, 2008

Filed under:

On a serious note, we’re telling ourselves that there’s just no way this happens in even a meaningful amount of Gamestop locations, but more than anything, the video waiting just after the break is for chuckles and chuckles alone. Apparently, one quick-thinking videographer-to-be captured a few stacks of Xbox 360s and Ṕs in the store bathroom. Yes, the store bathroom. So the Gamestop-sourced console you’re playing on right now could have all sorts of restroom-related germs on it. Yikes.

Video: ASUS N10 netbook gets hands-on treatment, plays COD4

Saturday, September 27th, 2008

Filed under:

We knew the ASUS N10 was a burly fellow when we took some street corner shots of it earlier this month, but we never even thought to toss Call of Duty 4 on there and waste away a solid 12 hours in online war zones. Thankfully, the blokes over at Mobile Computer did think to try that, and the results weren’t half bad. ‘Course, that discrete NVIDIA GeForce 9300M graphics set didn’t hurt, and if you’re sick enough to really buy a netbook for gaming, this one should probably be atop your list. At any rate, a rather in-depth hands-on video awaits you in the read link — go in expecting keyboard impressions, disappointment with the glare, and a few good minutes with an FPS and you’ll leave happy.

Motorola Femtocell Picture Frame Combines VoIP, Video, Bluetooth, Touchscreen and more

Friday, September 26th, 2008

motorola-femtocell-voip-prototype.jpg
Check out this cool new converged prototype device from Motorola that combines a picture frame with touch-screen, video camera, Bluetooth headset, VoIP, femtocell, and video streaming. A femtocell is a small cellular base station, typically designed for use in residential or small business environments that allows you to use your mobile phone in your home connecting to your femtocell access point.

Femtocells essentially are an alternative way to deliver the benefits of Fixed Mobile Convergence (FMC) without the need for a dual-mode handset. In the Youtube demo video below demoed by Motorola representative Harsha Hegde, you can clearly see they′re using the popular Counterpath Xten SIP-based softphone - also shown in the screen grab above. Motorola also demonstrates a femtocell mobile-to-mobile VoIP call, which is pretty cool.

Dell’s tiny M109S pocket projector gets hands-on treatment

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

It’s one thing to hear 3.46- x 4.12- x 1.46-inches. It’s another thing to see how giant someone’s hand looks beside Dell’s absolutely minuscule 𒴵S pocket projector. Based on a hands-on session with a near-final prototype of the pico-PJ, the cats over at Popular Mechanics were mighty impressed with what they saw. They noted that “colors were a little more washed-out than a top-end home theater projector,” but given the size and the manageable $499 price tag, it still managed to wow. Peep the in-action video in the read link.

Chrysler’s new electric vehicles shown on video

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

Filed under:

What else can we say? Chrysler’s new electric vehicles that were introduced yesterday just got a lot more real thanks to a stable of videos showing ‘em off. To be honest, we′re not too jazzed about the whisper quiet Chrysler minivan or the otherwise plain Jeep Wrangler, but that Dodge EV — mmm, now that’s a fine piece of engineering. Tap the read link and mash play if you′re thirsty for more.
