BlackBerry Storm Launch Crashes Verizon Network

Friday, November 21st, 2008

blackberrystorm_device_headon.jpg I was on the phone with TMC’s Verizon representative to discuss changing our mobile phone plans. The Verizon rep told me it was bad timing since their entire intranet ordering system had completely crashed as a result of the Blackberry Storm launch. TMC’s business Verizon rep couldn’t even make changes to our account as a result. Well, it certainly looks like the Storm is having a tremendously successful launch. Should the iPhone be worried?

Heck, hundreds of people lined up at Verizon Wireless stores today across the U.S. to buy the BlackBerry Storm, the first touch-screen phone from Research In Motion.

According to Reuters, more than 200 people had waited at a Verizon store in mid-town Manhattan but were turned away after it ran out of the new phones less than an hour after opening. The angry customers were seen wielding pitchforks and torches until the police came to restore order. No really…

Sony simplifies PSP-3000 lineup, only offering one SKU

Monday, October 27th, 2008

Filed under:

Hope all you would-be PSP buyers out there are into that PSP-3000 Ratchet & Clank Entertainment Pack that just went on sale a couple weeks ago, because it’s going to be the only bundle available from here on out. That’s the word straight from Sony, which says that “ongoing discussions” with retailers has led it to kill the previously-announced $169 4GB Memory PSP-3000 bundle in favor of offering a single SKU — although the company helpfully points out that you can still score a 4B PSP Memory Stick PRO Duo for an additional $45. Yeah, thanks for the tip, guys. The current Mystic Silver bundle will be joined by a Piano Black version sometime in December, so you’re not totally limited option-wise, but we′re not exactly pumped about throwing extra money at a game we don’t necessarily want — we′d happily drop the extra cash on a non-interlaced screen, however.

How would you change Sony’s PSP-3000?

Friday, October 24th, 2008

We first caught wind of a slightly revamped PSP months ago, and the long-awaited handheld — complete with a new, fancier and in some cases more dreadful display — finally hit US shelves this month. For those that picked one of these up and have spent some quality time digging into the latest firmware, how are you liking things? Particularly for those that upgraded, are you pleased with the new build? Are you being plagued with those mysterious screen problems features? Could you stand to see a few more things tweaked for the PSP-4000? We suspect there will be quite a few mixed messages flying in this one, so let’s get those comments rolling.

Sony says 5.01 PSP firmware update will fix Memory Stick problems

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

Filed under:

Sony got a lot of things right with its 5.0 firmware update for the PSP, with the PlayStation Store and its direct downloads making a long awaited appearance, but it looks to have caused a bit of a problem for folks with high-capacity Memory Sticks — namely, it was reporting that 8GB or 16GB cards are full when, in fact, there’s plenty of free space left on ‘em. Ever the one for a do-over, Sony now says that it’s aware of the problem and that the 5.01 firmware update will sort everything out when it’s released “soon.”

Sony “looking into” PSP-3000 screen interlacing problems

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

Ruh roh. Seems that swanky new LCD on Sony’s PSP-3000 could be garnering more complaints than anything else. If you’ll recall, the aforesaid system was touted as having a brighter, better screen than the PSP-2000, but now the PlayStation forums are filling up with irate PSP-3000 buyers who are experiencing unexplained scanlines and totally peculiar interlacing problems. As you can see above, the 3000’s screen looks noticeably worse than that of the 2000, and while we always hope that these issues are contained, we have at least one Engadget staffer and a Joystiq comrade who can attest to this being real. SCEA has been contacted and is currently “looking into” the matter — we won’t dare say that r-word just yet, but this doesn’t look particularly good on the surface. We’ll keep you posted.

[Via Joystiq]

Update: A Japanese Sony Computer Entertainment representative has informed us that the interlacing-like lines are just “features″ of the new LCD, and currently, there are no plans to fix it with a future software update since it is in the hardware.

Kevlar handkerchief keeps your nose clean, protects against friendly fire

Friday, October 10th, 2008

Filed under:

We find it hard to believe that we won′t see one of these being used somewhere in the upcoming 007 film, but even if not, you can definitely put one to use in your everyday life — if you can get ahold of one of the ten being made, that is. Srulirecht’s DÆmdur is a Kevlar-based handkerchief which can keep your schnoz squeaky clean and (in theory, at least) keep your chest free from bullets. Granted, even the manufacturer makes clear that it takes no responsibility for “schmucks and wooden-heads who feel compelled to test the endurance or resistance of the textile in any way,” but it sure beats those cotton ones you buy ten to a pack.

For a long time, one option for the music business to save themselves has been to offer an ‘all you can eat’ option for music - pay a monthly fee and listen to all of the music you fancy.

Search Like It’s 2001 On Google

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008

Google has been going ten years this year and to mark the occassion they’ve released a version of their database as of ten years ago.
First thing that you’ll notice is that it’s got an old school Google logo - not exactly sure if that’s the accurate one, as drop-shadows might have been beyond them.

Virtual Clothes Dressing Room Technology

Sunday, September 28th, 2008

Some new technology down under lets users see a reflection of themselves, and manipulate virtual clothes over their body so that they can see how they look like in a snap. Pricing and availability info are displayed on top, and users can have pictures of their virtual outfits sent to their mobile phones for later perusal.

It’s understandable that retail shops want to make things easier for guys who apparently don’t like to try clothes. After all, making shopping as easy possible means more potential for profit. But the gesture-driven interface already looked clumsy in the above video, and user experience expert Jakob Nielsen once asserted that:

Many user interfaces designed for the movies feature gestural input and 3D data visualizations. Immersive environments and fly-through navigation look good, and allow for more dramatic interaction than clicking on a linear list of 10 items. But, despite being a staple of computer conference demos for decades, 3D almost never makes it into shipping products. The reason? 2D works better than 3D for the vast majority of practical things that users want to do.

To be honest, the virtual changing room seems more like novelty than convenience.

LloydsTSB Mobile Banking Mini Review (80%)

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

Many financial institutions have long promised the ability to bank via your mobile, well now it’s a reality, at least for LloydsTSB customers (so presumably also for HBOS customers soon following their recent acquisition).
The mobile banking app is a Java application that should run on most mobile phone, well ones that support Java.
The application […]

Skullcandy to cram color mirasol display into MFM Pro headphones

Friday, September 12th, 2008

Remember that Freestyle Audio player that was supposed to blow folks away with its integrated color mirasol display? Yeah, that one that still hasn′t shipped? Qualcomm is apparently uninterested in that tiny little factoid, as it’s proudly pumping the MFM Pro headphones as the “second color mirasol-enabled design for the US market.” According to Jim Cathey, vice president of business development for Qualcomm MEMS Technologies, the deal with Skullcandy is being made to “move mirasol displays into the hands of more consumers,” but considering just how long we’ve been waiting for the aforementioned DAP, we’d say the burden of proof is squarely in its court. Oh, and the ship date for these cans? There isn’t one.

Production Chevy Volt interior and exterior spy shots leaked?

Friday, August 29th, 2008

Filed under:

We’ve seen GM’s carefully managed Volt PR campaign, but that hasn’t stopped our friends at AutoBlogGreen from combing the net for a better look, resulting in these apparent snaps of the center console and the production exterior rolling along the set of Transformers 2. The shiny, rounded all white center console with touch sensitive interface? You′re probably thinking what we’re thinking. At least the exterior shot — which shows off a “Volt” badge on the A-pillar — is a bit more clear. Of course, this might just be a movie-only iteration and any number of things could change before those batteries get out of Malibus and into proper rolling stock… but we’ll just sit back and keep our fingers crossed, at least until 2010.
