Sony starts shipping VAIO JS series all-in-one desktop

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

Filed under:

Sony’s VAIO JS series, which was introduced at CEDIA alongside two larger siblings, is finally on sale and shipping… if you′re after the VGC-J𔒦J/S, that is. Sony’s initial plan was to have the full line out and about by “mid-October,” though just the bottom-end $999.99 model is currently ready to ship at Amazon. We’d expect the other variations to follow suit shortly, and if you′re still trying to make up your mind if this is the all-in-one for you, why not take a look at a review?

No ♥ for High-end Mobile Apps

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

Thought I’d share this interesting report from Accenture about mobile phone app utilization that claims higher-end applications remain vastly under-used by U.S. consumers. Funny, I think Apple iPhone users might disagree. The report found that 88 percent of U.S. consumers said they never use their mobile phones or other mobile devices to watch videos. That is high, but expected since most mobile phones can′t even play videos. My main phone, a Windows Mobile 6.1 smart phone doesn′t even natively support Youtube Flash videos using Pocket Internet Explorer. I did install Skyfire though, which adds pretty respectable video performance. I was able to watch Youtube videos on my Windows Mobile with pretty decent video quality, but of course I’m not the ‘typical’ mobile phone user.

The report adds that 84 percent said they never use their mobile phones or mobile devices to send email. Say what? Email is only 4 pts better than video? I would have expected email penetration to be much better, especially with all the Blackberry phones. People want email access on their phone more than any other app, but maybe that’s just my opinion. Further, the report says 79 percent said they never employ them to play games on the go. So more people played games on their phone than sent email? You’ve got to be kidding me. How is that possible? I suppose many phones come with cheezy built-in games, which might skew the results.

Anyway, read the report for yourself…

mophie’s iPhone 3G Juice Pack ships today, not a moment too soon

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

C′mon, what iPhone 3G user who actually takes full advantage of that 3G radio hasn’t been disappointed with battery life at one point or another? And be honest, you’re also disappointed with the downright naff battery extenders floating around out there. Granted, mophie’s iPhone 3G Juice Pack isn′t the most elegant thing in the entire world, but the “sled” design sure beats adding an unwanted appendage onto your handset. The device — which is shipping today to those who pre-ordered early — will reportedly provide up to 350 additional hours of standby, up to 6 hours of 3G talk time (or 12 hours on 2G), another 6 hours of web surfing and a 458% boost in overall happiness. Hell, you’d pay $99.95 just for the latter, now wouldn’t you?

Sony’s PSP-3000 now available across North America

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

Given that a PSP-3000 Ratchet & Clank Entertainment Pack managed to sneak out a few days back (and, you know, being that today’s the official launch day and all), you shouldn’t be too floored to hear that the altogether brighter PlayStation Portable is now available across North America. ‘Course, you’ll have to fork over $199.99 for the aforementioned bundle if you want it today — the less-frills black PSP-3000 kit (with just a 4GB Memory Stick) should be around next month.

Elmo Live! on sale tomorrow for $59.99 (if you’re lucky)

Monday, October 13th, 2008

After the whole Tickle Me Elmo craze a few years back, you just knew Fisher-Price was going to ride this wave until it simply couldn′t stay afloat any longer. Elmo Live!, hailed as the “most innovative and engaging Elmo toy ever,” will officially hit store shelves tomorrow (October 14th) for $59.99, though we suspect the first batch will be snapped up in no time flat. Of course, those of you intent on retaining your sanity probably pre-ordered a few months back, but for everyone else, your battle to get one of this year’s hottest holiday gifts starts in under 24 hours. For those wondering what’s so special about this fellow, he supposedly tells jokes and makes movements that “give kids the feeling that Elmo is alive in their own homes.” Whether that’s really a good thing, however, is totally up to you.

Nokia’s N810 Internet Tablet WiMAX Edition in stock for $493

Monday, October 13th, 2008

Go figure — Sprint goes live with its XOHM WiMAX service, and all of a sudden, the long-awaited Nokia N810 WiMAX edition pops in stock. Crazy, we know. After seeing this puppy announced (and in the flesh) way back in April of this year, it’s about time Nokia made it available to Americans with the cash to spare. As of right now, the 4.13-inch, QWERTY-packin’ Internet Tablet can be ordered for $493, and unless Nokia’s fibbing, it’s in stock for shipment. Hello 4G, we’re thrilled you’re here.

Metal Gear Solid 4 Bluetooth headset now shipping to ears everywhere

Sunday, October 12th, 2008

This is it, soldiers. The day you’ve been anticipating has finally arrived. Okay, so maybe that’s a build up not deserved by the lowly Metal Gear Solid 4 Bluetooth headset, but seriously, we’ve been waiting ages for this thing to ship. Like, so long that the whole MGS4 aura has already come and gone. Those still firmly planted in Snake’s posse can choose to prove their fanhood by snagging this thing now for $39.98; if all goes well, it should be headed your way in a matter of business days. Over and out.

Shuttle’s Atom 230-packin’ X2700N nettop now available

Wednesday, October 8th, 2008

Filed under:

Surely you remember the Atom-based Shuttle ≻ barebones kit — you know, that cute little nettop case that was selling for $189 with its insides all hollow? For those with no time to fill it up, the full-fledged X2700N is now on tap. Boasting a 1.6GHz Intel Atom 230 processor, 1GB of DDR2 RAM, a 120GB hard drive and a GMA950 integrated graphics set, this Linux-based box can be yours right now for $379.99. That’ll also buy you a dual-layer DVD writer, gigabit Ethernet port, 802.11b/g WiFi, a handful of ports (six USB, VGA, DVI, audio in / out) and a 1-year warranty. ‘Tis a shame it’s not housing one of those dual-core Atom 330s, huh?

HTC Victor gets de-glitzed, unboxed

Thursday, July 17th, 2008

Filed under:

We actually rather like the Tumbler-like stealth rear surface of the HTC Touch Diamond, but if you’re trying to roll a little more Wayne, a more straightlaced edition dubbed “Victor” announced back in May with a flat rear end is now shipping. Apart from that it doesn’t look like there’s anything new going on here, so we’ll see if any Stateside carriers offer this version any time soon.

Keepin’ it real fake, part CXXV: Touch Diamond gets aped sans luster

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

Filed under:

Not that we’d view the actual Touch Diamond as IF or anything, but the Diamond ˪ is more along the lines of I3. In all seriousness, this thing isn′t too far from being spot-on identical (maybe it’s an HTC thing?), with a 2.8-inch display, built-in camera, multimedia player, Bluetooth and a microSD card slot. And for $160, we′re almost inclined to fall in love here… almost.

HTC Touch Diamond gets FCC clearance, smells like CDMA

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

Well, looky here! Not happy with the Touch Dual or Touch Pro, you saucy CDMA lovers, you? Try this one on for size then: the last piece in HTC’s EV-DO puzzle for 2008 has now hit the FCC, the Touch Diamond — and though only Telus has managed to announce it so far, we’re feeling good about plenty of other carriers on the CDMA train recognizing the importance of this device and signing on before too long. We see test reports for WiFi, too, though we imagine it′ll be at carriers’ descretions to disable it if they′re so inclined. Let’s get a move on, Sprint. You too, Verizon, don’t think we don’t see you whistling over there in the corner.

Samsung i900 Omnia vs. HTC Touch Diamond… fight!

Friday, July 4th, 2008

Filed under:

At this point, neither the HTC Touch Diamond nor the Samsung i900 Omnia need any introduction, but we′re happy to announce that these two have stepped into the squared circle and faced off in an epic nine-page battle. Reviewers manhandled both phones for an extended time and broke down the UI, hardware, features and overall usability, so if that sounds like something you′d be interested in, cover your face and head on down to the read link. We’re warning you though, it gets ugly.

[Thanks, Chavdar]
