Nimbuzz VoIP app on Apple App Store

Sunday, November 30th, 2008

nimbuzz-iphone.jpgNimbuzz is a free app that lets you call (VoIP), chat, message, and send photos, music and video on your iPhone, which was recently made available on the Apple App Store. Using a centralized contact list you can connect with all your buddies on Skype, Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger, ICQ, GoogleTalk, AIM, Gadu-Gadu, StudiVZ, Hyves, Jabber and Twitter, plus popular social networks including Facebook and MySpace. It features presence (who´s online and where), group calling, chatrooms, and more.

If your buddies are offline, let them know you’re trying to get in touch by sending them a “Buzz”. It will start Nimbuzz Mobile on their mobile phone. Nice feature.

Nimbuzz is pretty similar to fring, which I’ve used extensively. One thing Nimbuzz has up on fring is that it supports regional social network support including German StudiVZ, Dutch Hyves and Polish Gadu-Gadu.

Go download your copy on the Apple App Store today!

Custom-made Metal Gear Solid 4 PS3 puts Sony and Konami’s to shame

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

Filed under:

Konami and Sony’s limited edition Metal Gear Solid 4 PS3 may have been enough to satisfy a few fans of the game willing to pay a premium for their console of choice but, for sheer excess, it has nothing on this custom-made system built by the folks at Morpheon Mods, which is now up for auction on eBay. Among the many details adorning this shiny creation is a laser-cut, stainless steel MGS4 marquee, a laser-etched image of Solid Snake, a carbon fiber Fox Hound logo on the rear, and 14 white micro LEDs to light everything up just right. They even got Hideo Kojima himself to autograph the console and, perhaps best of all, they wrapped everything around a fully backwards compatible 60GB PS3. Just don’t expect any of that to come cheap, as bidding is already topping the $1,500 mark with six days left, though you do also get pretty impressive collection of Metal Gear swag with it, and 15% of the proceeds will go to help the Child’s Play charity.

ATM skimmers: now with SMS notification built right in

Friday, October 10th, 2008

Filed under:

Aw, how convenient! Now, when you purchase your next ATM skimmer, you don’t even have to risk being arrested when you wander out to retrieve it. For those outside of the know, an ATM skimmer sits on credit / debit card machines and swipes information as unsuspecting civilians pass their cards through. In the days of old, scammers would have to physically retrieve the skimmer in order to acquire all that precious information; now, models with built-in SMS notification are becoming available, meaning that numbers, expiration dates and that easy-to-forget three digit code on the back can be shot out instantly after the data is snatched. Word on the street has these devices going for $8,500 a pop, and they can dish out around 2,000 texts. Just another zany hack to be aware of in the wide world of ATM shenanigans.

NetIQ AppManager for Microsoft Office Communications Server

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

netiq-logo.gifAs a fan of Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 (OCS 2007) and with OCS 2007 R2 just around the corner (later this year/early next year), I’d like to see 3rd party vendors offer utilities to monitor OCS 2007’s performance to ensure reliability and uptime. After all, your communications are your lifeblood. Microsoft’s OCS 2007 is a unified communications (UC) platform that handles several communications methods, including IM/presence, voice, video, and collaboration, so it’s even more critical that OCS 2007 stays up. As such, I came across a new product just launched from NetIQ called NetIQ AppManager for Microsoft Office Communications Server.

NetIQ AppManager for Microsoft Office Communications Server (OCS) was designed to proactively ensure the performance and availability of Microsoft OCS 2007. AppManager’s core capabilities of real-time monitoring and management now extend to Microsoft OCS to ensure it is up and running.

Key Points:

  • Monitor the health and availability of Microsoft OCS servers
  • Monitor session and call activity
  • Get alerts when usage metrics reach critical levels
  • Report on adoption and usage trends

Key Features and Benefits

  • Provide proactive event management - Proactively detects problems with Microsoft OCS and sends alerts to your OCS administrators, often before end users are impacted.
  • Enables application health visibility - AppManager’s end-to-end service visibility vastly reduces downtime to your business services and visually represents service issues via service maps, helping you understand who is being affected.
  • Visualize your data - Use interactive charting and snapshot reports to give a visual view of your data for easier analysis and information sharing.
  • Delivers application performance reporting - Leverage AppManager’s data repository for all of your management information - events and performance data - giving you a centralized view of all servers and resources. This single repository will also streamline your reporting.

You can find out more about NetIQ AppManager for Microsoft Office Communications Server here.

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

Filed under:

A USB shuffle here, a logo swap there and here’s what you get, the MSI, uh hem, LG X110. Sporting a fairly obvious MSI Wind base, LG′s X110 is making its first appearance in Berlin. Prices will range from &euro399 to &euro499 (about $590 to $738) which takes home an 8.9-inch display, 120GB disk (6GB SSD option), 1GB of RAM, and choice of built-in 3G HSDPA and GPS modules. Yes, XP running atop a 1.6GHz Atom processor, too. On sale in Europe at the end of September.

MSI to reportedly build LG’s X110 netbook

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

Filed under:

MSI has been pretty successful with the Wind, wouldn’t you say? Yeah, so would LG. Reportedly, LG is hoping to solicit MSI’s services in order to craft its own X110 netbook. The mini laptop will purportedly boast an 8.9-inch panel, 120GB hard drive, 2GB of RAM and Windows XP runnin’ the show. Interestingly, the price is expected to hover between $625 and $790 as it focuses on “design and material quality” rather than low cost. Anxious to see how that move plays out, aren’t you?

The cats over at Laptop were able to acquire the new flip and test it out ever-so-briefly, and while initial impressions seemed rather positive, we reckon it’s the photos you’re really after. Kodak’s new Zi6 HD pocket video camera for the YouTube set

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

Sure, it might shoot 720p video, but you aren’t gonna catch indie filmmakers capturing the next low-budget masterpiece on Kodak‘s new ZР HD pocket video camera. The camera is Kodak’s response to Pure Digital‘s Flip and Creative’s Vado, complete with upright form factor, YouTube friendliness, simple as could be interface, a flip-out USB plug (with some surprising spring action), and, of course, totally shoddy video quality. The camera is powered by a pair of AA batteries, sports a 2.4-inch LCD, and can switch between VGA video, 30fps HD and 60fps HD. It’ll sell for $180 in September, in black or pink, but there’s only 128MB of memory on board — you’ll have to spring for an SD card if you want to do any substantial shooting.

Is the BlackBerry KickStart getting a $50 price tag on T-Mobile?

Thursday, July 3rd, 2008

Filed under:

We could tell by looking that RIM wouldn’t think of charging too many hundies for its still unannounced BlackBerry KickStart, but $49.99? CrackBerry has it that said flip phone will be selling at T-Mobile for a penny under $50 on a two-year contract, which certainly seems smart given the competition. ‘Course, we’ve nothing to substantiate this with just yet, but take one more look at that chubby side and tell us this thing deserves a triple digit price tag. That’s right, you can’t.

The Motorola RAZR 2 V9x for AT&T brings GPS, non-hideous color

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008

Filed under:

Shoot, all Motorola had to do was change from pink mahogany to this nice, normal, compliant shade of black, and that would’ve been enough of an update to justify a model name change. There’s more, though: the ͥx will officially offer AT&T Navigator, the Telenav-powered navigation system already found on the Z9, and we can see from these press shots that it’ll even work on the secondary display, which is pretty trick. This appears to be the same update that we’d originally heard would drop way back in January, which means we can likely expect Video Share support as well. Take a stroll on over to Engadget Mobile for the full gallery.

Nokia unleashes Supernova series: meet the 7210, 7310, 7510, and 7610

Friday, June 27th, 2008

Filed under:

Though they’ve already been well documented (heck, they’re already on sale in some parts of the world), Nokia’s just now getting around to making its foursome of Supernovas official. The new line reps mid-range fashion (think L’Amour, but not over the top) and comes in your choice of two candybars, a flip, or a slider as the 7210, 7310, 7510, or 7610, respectively. The 7210 features a tri-band GSM radio plus EDGE, a 2 megapixel camera, and an FM radio look for it to launch in the third quarter for &euro120 (about $189). The 7310 apes the 7210′s look but adds support for changeable Xpress-On faceplates, TV-out, and support for GSM 850, and while all that extra kit adds &euro35 (about $55) to the price over the lesser model, it’s available now. The 7510 goes for the flip form factor but carries over most of the 7310′s spec sheet, waiting it out until the fourth quarter for a &euro180 (about $283) launch in scary colors like “Fatal Red″. Finally, the 7610 (no, not that one) moves up to a beefier 3.2 megapixel camera and hits next quarter for €225 (about $354).

Announced today, the Flip Mino checks in at just 4- x 2- x 0.6-inches and weighs 3.3-ounces — a full 40% smaller than the previously mentioned Ultra. Pure Digital unveils Flip Mino for smaller, sexier crap videos

Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008

Pure Digital is following up its Flip Video Ultra, and not a moment too soon. With Creative’s Vado breathing down its neck, it was no surprise when we saw the Flip Mino surface in some leaked photos last month, and now it’s gone all official-like. The Flip Mino will retail for $180, and uses a built-in rechargeable battery instead the AA cells of its predecessor. It managed to shave off 40 percent of the Video Ultra’s size in the process, but the same 60 minutes of VGA video capacity are still intact. No word on exactly when this′ll be available, but we’re guessing it’s soon.

RIM’s BlackBerry Kickstart detailed further in Flip Experience

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

Filed under:

Don’t be ashamed, you’re out to get every last morsel of Kickstart goodness before RIM’s first flip phone ever hits the market. On the docket today is a half dozen slides detailing the Flip Experience, essentially spilling the painfully mundane minutiae of how the handset will function while talking, receiving a text message, showing alerts and playing music. Nothing too mesmerizing or unexpected, but the Matt Damon hateration is totally out of left field.
