Sony Ericsson TM506, T-Mobile’s first HSDPA handset, goes live

Friday, September 5th, 2008

Filed under:

The well-scooped TM506 from Sony Ericsson is now on sale, marking the first time that T-Mobile has openly and proudly admitted that a handset in its lineup can actually support 3G — despite the fact that they’ve had such gear for over a year now. Why the big secret? Until now, T-Mobile’s 3G network has been undergoing pretty much the softest soft launch in mobile history, and only now are enough markets starting to come on board to make the whole thing worthwhile. For what it’s worth, every previous 3G handset on the carrier has merely rocked UMTS, so the TM506 becomes its first HSDPA-equipped piece while also offering up a 2-megapixel cam, TeleNav navigation, and stereo Bluetooth. As of this writing it’s still showing “Coming Soon” on the site, but we’re hearing that it’ll be available today for $79.99 after rebate on contract.

Sony Ericsson releases SDK for Xperia X1 Panel Interface, panel download service in the works

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008

We know what you’re thinking — it’s Windows Mobile 6.1 fool, we’ve got the developers kit already. True, but not the SDK that allows developers to create custom, interactive panels for the touchscreen QWERTY’s Panel Interface. Sony Ericsson claims that, “The Xperia X1 will offer the richest mobile user experience, putting the world at the fingertips of the user.” In other words, the expectations have been set developers so you’d best get to to downloading the free SDK — you’ve got your work cut out for you. Sony Ericsson will offer a panel download service in the future, showcasing all the panels built by you, Google, and other partners.

Sony Ericsson releases SDK for Xperia X1 Panel Interface, panel download service in the works (updated: video)

The Panel Applications are meant to be simple, rich, and fully-interactive allowing quick access to your data — eMail, calendar, multimedia, games, IM… you name it. But don’t take our word for it, SE explains the new panel ecosystem in the video posted after the break.

Sony Ericsson says XPERIA X1 still on track to ship in Q4

Monday, September 1st, 2008

Filed under:

Rumors of the XPERIA X1 being delayed to 2009 have been floating around forever, and the chatter’s only gotten louder at IFA — to the point where Sony Ericsson’s been forced into damage-control mode for a second time, telling Reuters that “there is absolutely no delay” and that the company’s first WinMo phone is “on target” to “roll out in Q4.” That’s not quite the “second half of 2008″ SE’s been saying since the X1 was announced, but it’s still in the window — and given the half-baked nature of the devices we got to play with at IFA, we’d say taking a little extra time to get things right isn’t the worst idea in the world, even it means missing that rumored October Vodafone release date.

Sony Ericsson’s XPERIA X1 delayed to end of the year

Friday, August 29th, 2008

It’s a little difficult to delay a device that hasn’t gotten a more specific release window than “the second half of 2008″ (from official sources, at least), but Sony Ericsson is doing its darnedest. The scuttlebutt at IFA is that the XPERIA X1 has been delayed to the end of the year, and a Sony rep confirmed to us that it’s looking like December 2008 or January 2009. To blame is the software, specifically Windows Mobile 6.1 (or perhaps SE’s implementation of it), which appeared to be actively destroying the display units Sony has on display at IFA — of the three devices, one had some green status lights, one didn’t work at all, and one turned on briefly, only to crash hard and never return again… a pretty poor showing for day one of the show. Some hands-on shots are below, glaringly void of actual device usage.

XPERIA X1 to come in black only?

Friday, August 22nd, 2008

Filed under:

We’re hoping beyond hope that Sony Ericsson’s XPERIA X1 is actually nearing a launch date, but astute reader Kingsley just pointed out to us that SE’s US web site no longer lists silver as an available color choice, only Solid Black. That’s notable only because we’ve only mostly seen silver editions of the X1 until now, but a limited color palette’s not going to stop us from snapping this one up as soon as it hits — what about you?

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 scores cameo on Vodafone’s site for October release

Friday, August 22nd, 2008

The uncertainty of trying to predict exactly when — and where — Sony Ericsson’s beastly X1 would launch has come to be one of the more entertaining dramas in the mobile world this year, but it looks like Vodafone’s ready to shut down the rumor mill. The Windows Mobile superphone has now been slapped with an “expected” launch date in October for Voda’s UK audience, which means we can probably expect it in at least a few other European locales in the same timeframe. Americans (of both the South and North variety), Asians, Africans, Australians, and Antarcticans, though — well, there’s no telling where you guys stand at the moment, so hang tight.

Sony Ericsson’s PlayNow Arena: 1 million, DRM-free songs on Monday

Friday, August 22nd, 2008

What was just a footnote to 2007 has finally come to fruition. Sony Ericsson just went live with details for the August 25th, Nordic launch of its PlayNow Arena media download site. Initially the site will offer 1 million, DRM-free songs (ramping up to 5 million) from Sony BMG, Warner Music, and EMI. It will also offer games, ringtones, applications, and themes for your mobile downloading pleasures. Other European countries will come on board later this year before it goes global in 2009. Tracks are expected to be “on par” with Apple’s iTunes ($0.99 / €0.99) pricing but will cost SEK9 (about $1.43, credit card required) for the Swedish introduction. Full press release after the break.

Sony Ericsson’s TM506: T-Mobile AWS 3G support included

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

Filed under:

When Sony Ericsson’s TM506 was leaked earlier this month, there was no mention made of the flip’s support of AWS 3G. Thankfully (thankfully!), the official launch brings along confirmed support for the protocol. SE is linking up with T-Mobile USA once again, providing a stylishly small handset that sports a 2-megapixel camera, built-in A-GPS (TeleNav), stereo Bluetooth support, an M2 card slot, multimedia playback, outer / inner displays and 9.5-hours of GSM talk time (250-hours on standby). Curiously, no price is mentioned, but you can find out for yourself when this lands in stores early next month.

Sony Ericsson depletes stash of product names, announces slim T700 phone

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

Yippee, it’s T700 day at Sony. First they launched the DSC-T700 digicam, now the T700 cellphone. The T700 candybar is mostly phone though with a smattering of camera just for kicks. We’re talking quad-band GSM and UMTS/HSDPA 2100 with 4.5-hours of 3G talk and a 3.2 megapixel camera with cell-id geotagging and photo light. It measures just 10-mm thin with Bluetooth A2DP, stereo speakers, 2-inch TFT LCD, and 512MB of Memory Stick Micro (M2) storage tossed in the box. Available in “select markets” in Q4 for what’s expected to be a middling price tag.

Sony Ericsson launches Zeemote’s JS1 Controller bundle for the W760

Monday, August 4th, 2008

Tilt controls might be getting all the fanfare, what with the iPhone and Sony Ericsson’s own W760 featuring tilt gaming, but the analog stick still reigns supreme when it comes to getting some actual fragging done. We spotted Zeemote’s promising JS1 mobile joystick back at MWC this year, featuring four trigger buttons and an analog nub, but the little Bluetooth controller is finally getting a release. In fact, Sony Ericsson is giving this thing away in the Netherlands, with the purchase of a W760. Sadly, folks who already own a W760, don’t live in the Netherlands, or just want a stand-alone JS1 for throwing at people or wedging in small crevices are still out of luck — still no word on price or release of the thing outside this deal.

Latest Bond to feature Titanium Sony Ericsson C902 — Q would have done better

Monday, August 4th, 2008

Filed under:

It’s Bond time again and that means the inevitable glut of merchandizing tie-ins. First out of the gate is a limited edition Titanium silver Sony Ericsson C902 Cyber-shot which does the honor of promoting the release of the latest 007 exploit dubbed Quantum of Solace. Besides the color, 007-themed wallpapers, screen savers, and “spy-style” game demo, the C902 slider that actor Daniel Craig will sport during the November theatrical launch is just like the C902 launched way back in February. Oddly enough, no pictures of the new 007 model were provided by Sony Ercisson in the announcement. Fitting though, given Q’s disquieting absence from the film we weren’t expecting much. SE could certainly learn a thing or two from Nokia about effective product placement.

Sony Ericsson’s G705 slider leaks onto internet, shows hope for the future

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

Filed under:

An undeterred Sony Ericsson appears to have a handsome new slider on its way out in the near future — according to a slew of pictures leaked to the se4m forums — meant to sit beside the previously spied (and supposedly forthcoming) Remi. The device — dubbed the G705 — will feature GPS, WiFi, a 2.4-inch display, a 3.2 megapixel camera with flash, 128MB of internal memory, and will run atop the A2 software platform. There’s not a ton of info to go around right now, but if you hit the read link you can feast your eyes on a wide array of succulent photos. We’re including another shot after the break, just in case you don’t like traveling.

Sony’s profits drop drastically this quarter, ‘Spider-Man 4′ needed badly

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

Filed under:

According to Sony’s latest earnings report, the company’s profits have dipped to almost half of what they were at this time last year. Analysts are citing a strengthened yen, the lack of a major Hollywood blockbuster like Spider-Man 3, and continuing issues with its mobile phone arm as core reasons for the slide. It’s no surprise that the company is taking a hit, especially after the outrageously poor performance of Sony Ericsson, though the numbers reveal that even improved sales of the PS3 this quarter can’t sustain losses from core businesses like Sony BMG and fluctuating currency rates. Looks like the champagne will have to stay in the fridge this quarter.

Sony Ericsson pushes out a trio of new Walkman phones, right on cue

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

Happy 3rd birthday mister Walkman phone. To celebrate, Sony Ericsson is getting official with its W902 “Patti” (pictured), W595 slider, and W302 candybar Walkman handsets. We knew the celebration was coming with the exception of Patti making a last minute substitution for Alicia. SE’s quad-band GSM/EDGE W902 is the all-singing, all-media workhorse with UMTS/HSDPA 2100 data, 5 megapixel camera, 8GB of M2 memory, and 2.2-inch, 240 x 320 pixel display. It comes bundled with a pair of premium HPM-77 headphones and the promise of a clear audio, bass-thumpin’ experience similar to that offered by SE’s W980. The W595 shares the same radios but packs in stereo speakers, 2GB of M2 memory, a 3.2 megapixel camera, motion sensing Shake control, and a stereo Share jack to split the music with a friend. The quad-band GSM/EDGE W302 neglects 3G entirely in favor of a low price tag and dreams of mass adoption. As such, it offers a number of middling specs like a 2 megapixel camera, 512MB of M2 memory, FM radio, and stereo Bluetooth. All three Walkmans will hit select markets in Q4.
