We’ve been users of Wordpress for many years and are huge fans of the free-to-use publishing platform.
Yesterday was the first time that we’ve hit a major problem with it - and it was a significant one.

We use it on many of our publications including VentnorBlog, that covers Isle of Wight News.

Hynix develops triple-level-cell NAND flash: 30 percent cheaper than MLC

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

Filed under:

The more cells you can pack onto a NAND chip, the cheaper the storage, so we’re excited about Hynix’s recent annoucement of triple-level-cell NAND flash. You might have noticed that MLC-based SSDs are cheaper than SLC units, and TLC keeps the trend alive — Hynix says the cost of TLC production is some 30 percent lower than than current chips. On top of that, the 32GB chips themselves are 30 percent smaller than current NAND chips, meaning device manufacturers will be able to cram more storage into our PMPs and phones. We’ll have to wait a little while though: production is going to ramp up in October, and Hynix hasn’t committed to using the new chips in SSDs quite yet.

Egg McMuffin Tasty Goodness!

Herb Peterson McMuffin

Herb Peterson, creator of the Egg McMuffin, died in Santa Barbara last Tuesday. (image: John Hayes/Associated Press)

Last week, I was listening to Mark Levin on WABC 770 AM radio when I learned that Herb Peterson, the inventor of the tasty Egg McMuffin had passed away at the age of 89. Herb’s invention actually paved the way for McDonald’s to introduce breakfast to McDonald’s restaurants - previously only lunch & dinner were served. Mark Levin interviewed Herb’s son David Peterson who explained that breakfast now accounts for 30% of McDonald’s business. So McDonald’s franchise owners owe a lot to this man. As do I, since Egg McMuffins are one of my favorite foods. Though with my Biggest Loser contest going on, I haven’t had an Egg McMuffin in months!

Herb actually began his career with McDonald’s Corp. as vice president of the company’s advertising firm, D’Arcy Advertising. He even wrote McDonald’s first national advertising slogan, "Where Quality Starts Fresh Every Day." Peterson then became a franchise owner of six McDonald’s restaurants in Santa Barbara and Goleta, California.

Per Mark’s interview with David Peterson, David explained how his father Herb loved eggs Benedict and then worked on creating something similar for his McDonald’s franchises. With that, the Egg McMuffin was born! It made its debut at a restaurant in Santa Barbara that Herb Peterson co-owned with his son David. The Egg McMuffin is a breakfast sandwich that consists of an egg that had been formed in a Teflon circle with the yolk broken, and topped with a slice of cheese and a slice of grilled Canadian bacon. It was served open-faced on a toasted and buttered English muffin

I took an excerpt of the Mark Levin show of the David Peterson interview and posted it here as an .mp3 if you want to hear the interesting history of the Egg McMuffin along with Mark’s comedic interviewing style.

BBC broadcasting Rugby Six Nations match in 3D

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

Filed under:

Not happy letting us Yankees get away with all the 3D sporting action, the BBC plans to test a 3D HD broadcast of a Rugby Six Nations match next month. A lot like the NBA’s test with last year’s All-Star Game and NBA Finals, the March 8th game between Scotland and England will be captured by three camera rigs and then transmitted via satellite — unlike the fiber connection used by the NBA — to an audience watching a big screen with 3D glasses. Can Communicate, Inition and Axis are the companies forming 3DFirm, which is partnering with the Beeb to make the whole thing happen, including working out a new style of camera work and post production. We won’t say we’re waiting for a 3D broadcast of real football to get excited about these tests (we’ll just think it.)

NAB trying to get Sirius / XM to surrender spectrum?

Thursday, February 7th, 2008

Filed under:

As the recent action in the 700MHz auction has shows, wireless spectrum is a valuable commodity — which is why it looks like the NAB and Clear Channcel might drop their lawsuit against the Sirius / XM merger if the two companies agree to give up a chunk of the airwaves. Industry observers close to the deal have called this the “endgame,” saying that the broadcasters have been after the spectrum all along, but we’re not so sure — we’d think that the NAB would be pretty happy if Sirius and XM decided not to get hitched after all. Still, it’s an interesting tactical move, if true — let’s just hope it doesn’t delay a decision on this merger even longer.

Norcent delivers 19-inch LT-1931 / 22-inch LT-2231 LCD TVs

Thursday, January 3rd, 2008

Norcent’s 42-inch LT-4231P a bit too large for your armoire? If so, the firm is hoping to satisfy your LCD TV needs anyway with the 19-inch LT-1931 and 22-inch LT-2231. The former features a 1,440 x 900 resolution along with an 800:1 contrast ratio while the latter serves up a 1,680 x 1,050 resolution and a contrast ratio of 1,000:1. Both sets enjoy a 2D digital comb filter, 300 cd/m2 brightness, a trilingual on-screen menu, HDMI / component / S-Video / composite inputs and a built-in TV tuner that plays nice with NTSC, ATSC and Clear-QAM signals. Unlike the aforementioned 42-incher, this pair is available as we speak for $299.99 and $379.99, respectively.

EU reaches agreement on Galileo satnav, Spain goes home angry

Friday, November 30th, 2007

Filed under:

The European Union’s next generation satellite navigation system has finally gotten to green light from all involved parties… except Spain. As we reported in July, the project had gotten the high five from US interests, but the works had been stalled as Spain fought to maintain a control center in Madrid. In the end, 26 of the 27 member states of the Union decided to move forward with the project, declining Spain’s request, and leaving them to bow out of the agreement. As of now, there will only be control centers in Germany and Italy, but the project will begin to move forward once again, with a launch slated for 2013. Says EU Transport Commissioner Jacques Barrot, “Galileo will become the spearhead for European technology.” We’re all for the new system, but we hope a few satellites don’t spark another Thirty Years’ War.
