Nokia fesses to looming N95-3 software update, fails to mention specifics

Sunday, May 18th, 2008

Filed under:

It’s been a solid tick since the North American N95, also referred to as the N95-3, received a software update. For those clamoring for a little love from Nokia′s dev team, listen up: an administrator over at the outfit’s forums has admitted that the Software Update crew has a new version in the works. We’re told that they′ve heard the demands for a fresh release, and they′re toiling away in order to bring it to N95-3 owners by early June. Unfortunately, we’re not told what new features we can expect, and even worse, “early June” seems like eons away, doesn’t it?

Kenko puts remote on the side of KDF-07 digiframe

Monday, May 5th, 2008

You want questionable design? Kenko’s giving you questionable design. Rather than just leaving the remote unattached like, oh, every other digital photo frame maker in the universe, this firm has found a reason to stick it on the side of the frame itself. Generally known for its photographic paper, Kenko has ventured into the ever-growing world of digiframes with the 7-inch KDF-07, and while the flip-out remote can be tucked behind when not needed, we’re still a bit perplexed as to why it’s even assembled in this manner. Specs wise, you’ll find support for JPEG, MP3, AVI and MPEG1/2/4 file formats, a multicard reader, a 480 x 234 resolution panel and a USB port for transferring files from your PC. Folks somehow obsessed with the above pictured device can supposedly snag one in grain, black or silver motifs for ¥16,800 ($160), but we’re betting that crew is mighty small. Buffalo’s DriveStation Combo4 external HDD touts four interfaces

Thursday, April 3rd, 2008

Filed under:

You know what they say: you can never have enough ports, right? Apparently Buffalo Technology is nodding its head in agreement, as its DriveStation Combo4 features no fewer than four different interfaces and five total connection ports. Though it can’t be connected to multiple machines simultaneously, you can hook things up one at a time with USB 2.0, eSATA, FireWire 400 and FireWire 800 (x2). The drive, which comes in 320GB (HD-HS320Q), 500GB (HD-HS500Q) and 1TB (HD-HS1.0TQ) flavors, comes bundled with the PC / Mac-compatible Memeo AutoBackup software and a two-year warranty to boot. For the port lovers who just can’t resist, all three are available now for £79 ($156), £93 ($184) and £161 ($319) from least capacious to most.

Nokia’s N810 internet tablet gets a $90 price cut

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008

Filed under:

If you’ve been looking for some kind of incentive to dip into the savings account and splurge on a new gadget, this may be music to your ears. Nokia has just lowered the price on its jack-of-all-trades N810 internet tablet, shaving $90 off the MSRP to bring it down to a highly affordable $389.99. Of course, you can probably find the WiFi-sportin’, QWERTY-havin’, GPS-rockin’ little guy slightly cheaper if you troll the internet (which we know you will). Before you lay down the cash, though, you might want to ask yourself this: does the price drop mean a new version is on the way, like, say… that WiMAX-equipped N830 we’ve been hearing about? It’s a tough call, but we know you′ll make the decision.

[Thanks, Tony S.]

Euro Xbox 360 price cuts landing Monday?

Sunday, March 9th, 2008

Filed under:

Remember that Xbox 360 price cut we mentioned a few days ago? Well it appears that the Financial Times Germany is reporting that this Monday, Microsoft will trim the fat from the Arcade and Pro consoles, shaving €80 and €50 off the price tag, respectively. Of course, right now this is still unconfirmed by the boys in Redmond (or in any other official location), though the buzz in the community does seem to suggest that these cuts are coming. Hopefully if these become a reality, the company will break something off for folks on these shores as well — we need all the help we can get right now.

TerreStar nabs $300 million in funding, aims for satellite launch by end of year

Friday, February 8th, 2008

Filed under:

TerreStar certainly hasn’t been flooding us with news over the years, but it looks like the company’s been keeping itself busy nonetheless, and its now scored an impressive $300 million in funding for its efforts. That money, coming from EchoStar and Harbinger Capital Partners, will largely be used to fund the company through the launch of its TerreStar-1 “hybrid mobile satellite” (pictured above in a circa 2005 mockup), which promises to power cellphones that’ll be able to use traditional terrestrial networks and fall back on satellite when there’s no other signal. What’s more, despite the three-year-gap since the initial announcement, TerreStar says it’s still shooting for a launch by the end of this year, with Arianespace confirming that it’s able to provide the transport into space during the December 2008 through February 2009 launch window.

Magellan Maestro 3100 hacked to add file manager / media player

Tuesday, December 11th, 2007

Filed under:

Although we’ve already seen Garmin’s c510 / c530 get hacked up earlier this year, now it’s time for Magellan’s Maestro 3100 to head under the knife. The engineering David Goeken managed to personalize his unit with a custom splash screen, a beefed up POI file, a file manager for adding / sorting through applications and a full-fledged media player for good measure. Granted, there’s a laundry list of known issues to go along with it, but hey, what fun is a hack without a little troubleshooting? Before hitting the read link and rolling up your sleeves, you may want to grab a meal and a few hours of rest — you’ll need the energy just reading through the how-to guide.
