Nokia unleashes Supernova series: meet the 7210, 7310, 7510, and 7610

Friday, June 27th, 2008

Filed under:

Though they’ve already been well documented (heck, they’re already on sale in some parts of the world), Nokia’s just now getting around to making its foursome of Supernovas official. The new line reps mid-range fashion (think L’Amour, but not over the top) and comes in your choice of two candybars, a flip, or a slider as the 7210, 7310, 7510, or 7610, respectively. The 7210 features a tri-band GSM radio plus EDGE, a 2 megapixel camera, and an FM radio; look for it to launch in the third quarter for €120 (about $189). The 7310 apes the 7210’s look but adds support for changeable Xpress-On faceplates, TV-out, and support for GSM 850, and while all that extra kit adds €35 (about $55) to the price over the lesser model, it’s available now. The 7510 goes for the flip form factor but carries over most of the 7310’s spec sheet, waiting it out until the fourth quarter for a €180 (about $283) launch in scary colors like “Fatal Red”. Finally, the 7610 (no, not that one) moves up to a beefier 3.2 megapixel camera and hits next quarter for €225 (about $354).

Samsung intros the snoozefest J800 Luxe and L700 cellphones

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

Filed under:

It looks like the folks at Samsung are keeping the fires burning with a batch of new handsets announced at the Singapore Telecommunications Exhibition. First on the block is the 3G, J800 Luxe slider, a mid-range phone with a 2.2-inch 176 x 200 display, two megapixel camera, FM tuner, A2DP support, and a slot for microSD cards. The electronics-maker is also offering the L700, a fairly unexciting candybar with a 2.1-inch screen, HSDPA, a choice of colors (pink, silver, and gold), and pretty much all the other features listed for the previous phone. The most interesting offering from this set is the Symbian-based L870 that we’ve seen previously, which the company claims is still on target for its August release. No word on pricing or release dates for the two new models, however.

[Thanks, Craig]

LG’s Secret spotted and handled at CommunicAsia

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

Filed under:

LG’s stylish Secret has been out of the closest for a good while now, but there’s just nothing like a flurry of high-resolution shots straight from the show floor to drum up interest. The admittedly elegant slider is strutting its stuff over in Singapore, and we must say, that carbon fiber bod and 5-megapixel camera sure look delicious here on the other side of the world. Check the read link for a few more photos, and head on past the break for a hands-on video.

Sony Ericsson’s Xperia X1 gets handled, photographed

Monday, June 16th, 2008

Filed under:

The lucky chaps over at Boy Genius Report have managed to get their hands all over Sony Ericsson’s latest and greatest — the hotly anticipated Xperia X1. Early word is that the 800 x 480 screen, optical joystick, and speedy HSDPA data are all very welcome, but the keyboard (which looks like it would be a joy to type on) leaves a lot to be desired. Of course, the OS should come as no surprise, and they don’t seem to have any shots of Sony’s “panel interface,” so for now you’ll have to make do with some nice looks at the exteriors of the device. Hit the read link and check it out yourself.

Nokia E66 S60 slider goes official

Monday, June 16th, 2008

Filed under:

Nokia’s bringing some new, unsurprising, E series hotness to the States in the form of the new E66 slider. Featuring GSM, EDGE, WCDMA and HSDPA bands galore, the phone is slated for a Q3 release this year. Features include a 3.2 megapixel auto-focus camera, along with a front-facing cam for video calls, WiFi, A-GPS, 3.6mbps web browsing and a 2.4-inch QVGA screen. What really sets it apart from its E series forebears is the 13.6mm thickness, and some rather sexy new styling. Nokia’s also worked in a sort of business / pleasure switch to change profile from your work email and documents to your personal accounts and such — you can also swap to landscape mode by turning the device. Battery life is certainly no slouch, with 14 days of standby, and 7.5 hours of talk on GSM, or 3.5 hours of talk on 3G. There’s only 110MB of internal memory, but you can supplement that with an 8GB microSD card. The phone comes in “grey steel” or “white steel” (what, no blue steel?), but brace yourself for the pricepoint: Nokia’s quoting this at “under $500,” and probably won’t have any carriers Stateside subsidizing it in the short term. Quite a hefty price for a QVGA phone with little built-in storage, but some Nokia fanboy is certainly going to get a kick out of it.

Sony Ericsson Cyber-shot C905 breaks cover with 8.1 megapixels in tow

Tuesday, June 10th, 2008

Filed under:

Paris who? Sony Ericsson’s let yet another one slip out of its fingers before the official announcement, this time around a killer slider said to be the Cyber-shot C905, codenamed “Shiho.” If the rumors pan out, it’s got one heck of a rap sheet, too, starting off with an 8.1 — yes, eight point flippin’ one — megapixel camera with both xenon and LED flashes (for still and video capture, respectively), GPS, TV out, DLNA certification, and HSDPA in your choice of European and American flavors. The screen’s apparently just QVGA, but in light of everything else we’re hearing, we might just be willing to let that slide. It’ll apparently be announced on the 17th of the month in gold, silver, and black for a fourth quarter release. Wowza!

[Thanks, Adrian]

Nokia N85 in the wild!

Monday, June 9th, 2008

digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/gadgets/Nokia_N85_in_the_wild’; What’s the N85, you ask? We don’t know a heck of a lot about this one, but we’re told that it features a 5 megapixel camera, GPS, and geotagging — sort of an N96 lite, perhaps. The slider features the same industrial design featured on all of Nokia’s Nseries devices as of late, but beyond that, your guess is as good as ours regarding target market, pricing, availability. Stay tuned for more as we get it!

Qisda showcases dual-mode GSM / WiMAX-compatible mobile

Saturday, June 7th, 2008

Filed under:

Far from being the first dual-mode handset we’ve seen (heck, it’s not even the first WiMAX-friendly dualie), Qsida’s recently showcased slider is still quite intriguing. The currently unnamed cellphone supports both 802.16e WiMAX as well as GSM / GPRS / EDGE networks, and just in case you’re hankering for another way to get connected, there’s a built-in WiFi module too. Reportedly, the smartphone is a test device used in the M-Taiwan initiative to promote WiMAX, and aside from handling voice calls via (almost) any flavor of wireless protocol, you’ll also find Windows Mobile 6.1 running the show. Granted, this particular unit wasn’t down with 3G, but a spokesperson was adamant that such a handset would be added to its portfolio eventually.

Nokia’s 8800 outdoes itself again with diamond-studded edition

Friday, June 6th, 2008

Filed under:

We don’t know what it is about Nokia’s 8800, but fashionistas and high-end designers just can’t seem to keep their fingerprints off of it. Enter Thomas Heyerdahl, the same artisan who gussied-up an iPod shuffle earlier this year. This fellow has crafted a version of the handset laced with 112 authentic diamonds, and it’s said that only 100 of the coveted (and individually numbered) mobiles will be made available. All told, you’ll find 0.7 carats of United Nations-approved diamonds per phone, and while the bulk of these things will be sold in select outlets for 30,000 Norwegian kroner ($5,933), numero uno is set to be auctioned for charity to the highest bidder. Pony up, son!

Screen Grabs: Nokia’s XpressMusic 5610 causes Panic at the Disco

Friday, June 6th, 2008

Filed under:

Weird — doesn’t that shot above look scarily similar to this one? Okay, minus the coinage, paperwork and miniaturized human. Seems that Nokia’s XpressMusic 5610 found its way into Panic at the Disco’s That Green Gentleman video, but considering how it gets walked all over and completely disregarded after the 40 second mark, we doubt it stands much chance of getting into the guys’ hearts.

[Thanks, Jimmy]

Samsung Soul promo video shows 10 optical illusions in 136 seconds

Saturday, May 17th, 2008

Filed under:

We’ll be frank — we really have no idea what Samsung’s getting at with its freshest Soul promotional video, but it’s certainly a fine piece of eye candy if nothing else. Put simply, the video shows a maniac darting about demonstrating ten optical illusions in just over two minutes, and in case you couldn’t guess, the Soul is saved for last. Should we have prefaced that bit with a spoiler warning? Too bad — vid’s still waiting after the jump if you’re interested, though.

[Thanks, Joel]

Video: Sony’s world’s smallest TG1 / TG3E 1080i camcorder unboxed, previewed

Thursday, April 10th, 2008

Whether you call it the HDR-TG3E (as it’s known in Europe) or the HDR-TG1 (as it’s been dubbed everywhere else), it’s still the world’s smallest 1080i camcorder. Tracy and Matt got their hands on an early unit for all your unboxing and first-impression pleasures. They’re already “very impressed” with the “fabulous” image quality when viewed on their 50-inch plasma. Don’t let the Queen’s English and SCART adapter fool you, this is pretty much exactly what you can expect to land Stateside next month. Click through for the moving pictures then hit up that read link for a more detailed analysis — looks like Sony’s got themselves a winner.
