You know that unlocked HTC Touch Diamond advertised at Best Buy? Well, we just received word from the inside that it does, indeed, carry US 3G. At least that’s the obvious assumption given the HTCTOUCHDIA model and IAMOND UNLKD 3G description shown in Best Buy’s all too familiar RSS feed. $700, and “coming soon” — you ready?

Best Buy began selling the Apple iPhone on Sunday, becoming the first U.S. retailer to do so outside of Apple and AT&T stores. The Apple iPhone will be carrier in 970 Best Buy stores. Rich Tehrani and I decided to take a walk to Best Buy which is just down the street from TMC and take some pictures of their display. Rich was also interested in buying an external battery back for his current iPhone since the battery life is atrocious. He especially wants the extra juice so he is prepared for ITEXPO just one week away. No doubt Rich will be being tons of interviews as well as speaking, and he′ll be using his iPhone to take photos, record video interviews, and check email. I’m using my Windows Mobile xv6700 phone and plan on using LiveCast to stream portions of ITEXPO.
As we approached the Best Buy store, we noticed the Apple iPhone stickers on both sets of sliding glass doors heavily promoting that they are carrying the iPhone. Both Rich and I snapped some photos. As we entered the store, the “greeter” told us we weren’t allowed to take pictures inside the store.
So we weren’t able to snap photos of the display.
Here’s what we learned. One, a Best Buy representative told us that Best Buy is not allowed to advertise the fact that they are carrying the iPhone and said “Apple wants most of the revenue.”, implying that Apple wants people to purchase iPhones directly from Apple stores. Very interesting. Well they may not be able to advertise it in TV, newspapers, etc. but they sure are advertising the hell out of the iPhone in the store itself!
The display of the iPhone with a demo unit is front and center as you walk into the store. You are bombarded with pictures of the iPhone and the demo display as soon as your walk in. You can sort of make out the iPhone display and the table containing iPhone brochures and literature in this picture below:
The iPhone accessories display was a bit limited. They didn’t offer an external battery pack that Rich was looking for. Offering iPhones in 970 Best Buy retail stores gives Apple a much larger retail footprint than just their Apple & AT&T stores. That’s a huge plus for Apple. Also, when people walk into an AT&T store or even an Apple store, they are probably already interested in an iPhone. Customers walking into Best Buy to buy electronics or DVDs, might make a impulse purchase of an iPhone after seeing / playing with the demo unit and all the corresponding iPhone marketing literature.
Rich is blogging our trip to Best Buy as well speak. Be sure to check out his blog for more.

Yeah, the BBC seems to be quite the indecisive bunch, but according to a recent blog posting by Ashley Highfield (Director, BBC Future Media And Technology), its iPlayer may actually see face time on Apple’s revised Apple TV platform. Quite frankly, details are far too thin to actually make anything of this just yet, but he does note that the “effective relaunch of the AppleTV… coupled with its (long anticipated) move to a rental model, means that we can look to getting BBC iPlayer onto this platform too, as we should be able to use the rental functionality to allow our programs to be downloaded, free, but retained for a time window, and then erased, as our rights-holders currently insist.” The post goes on to touch on a number of IP to TV-related topics, but not once does it mention actually being in talks with Cupertino to make this happen. Guess it’s wait-and-see from here, eh?

It seems that Elgato was most proud of its totally revamped EyeTV 3 software, but we couldn’t help but notice two rather substantial hardware updates that it also chose to announce (albeit quietly) at Macworld 2008. Starting today, the firm’s EyeTV Hybrid USB tuner and its EyeTV 250 Plus TV receiver / video converter (shown after the break) are both available with built-in support for unencrypted digital cable (Clear-QAM) channels. ‘Course, they’ll both still pull in NTSC / ATSC signals, but the addition of Clear-QAM support is a real boon for OTA addicts. Pricing for the extra versatile devices remains unchanged at $149.95 and $199.95, respectively, but unfortunately, existing owners will not be able to receive the newfound functionally with a simple firmware update.

For those who didn′t realize that Macworld actually does keep on spinnin′ once Mr. Jobs darts back to Cupertino, here’s a little more proof. Elgato Systems is using the remaining spotlight in San Francisco to showcase its latest iteration of EyeTV, and we must say, we’re digging the additions. Aside from the completely new user interface tweaked to match Leopard, users of EyeTV 3 will also notice an “extended program guide featuring intelligent searching and recording functionality,” enhanced network sharing, Smart Playlists, bolstered AppleScript support and an integrated video editor. If that rundown has you overcome with the itch to upgrade, you can do so for $39.95 (or free for users of EyeTV 2 who obtained their license after December 1, 2007), and if you’re looking to start fresh, you can snag the software right now for $79.95.

Live from the heart-pounding, pulse-racing showfloor of Macworld 2008, we bring you a full frontal hands-on of Axiotron’s long-awaited Modbook — the MacBook tablet conversion. After all the waiting and wondering, we’re not totally blown away by the end result, though if you’re an artist or designer, this could be a real boon to your productivity. The build is sturdy, and the screen feels solid beneath your stylus (stylus only that is — no touchscreen here), though the pressure sensitivity seemed to give out at really soft touches… of which there were many. Check the gallery and see for yourself.

While many around the globe have their eyes fixated on the events going down in Las Vegas this week, the 9th Auto Expo in New Delhi, India is managing to steal at least a hint of the limelight. Announced today, Tata Motors’ $2,500 “1-Lakh” car will actually see production in India later this year, and it has affectionately been dubbed the NANO. For those not keen on such a title, it can also be recognized as “The People’s Car,” but it seems “The Person’s Car″ may have been more appropriate. Nevertheless, this little bundle of automotive joy will feature an all-aluminum, two-cylinder engine that can deliver around 54 US miles per gallon, and while stripped down would be a gross understatement, it does promise to “exceed current regulatory (read: safety) requirements.” Hit the read link for Tata’s official release along with a plethora of photos.
