Twitter Misunderstood in the Evening Standard

Tuesday, December 2nd, 2008

Nick Curtis has written a poorly-researched piece in the Evening Standard that attempts to take a chunk out of Twitter, while asking if ‘Twitter is the new Facebook.’
Why poorly-researched? Well, he starts the piece saying that Tweets are 160 characters long - and as anyone who has ever looked at the sevice will know, they’re […]

Stored Apps: An Easier Way to Look for iPhone Apps

Saturday, November 29th, 2008

stored-apps.jpg

Having a hard time looking for an iPhone or iPod touch app that suits your category and price-point needs? Stored Apps attempts to catalog all the apps in the iTunes Store and make available as a searchable and filterable database. Search results provide a direct link to each app’s iTunes Store page.

Looking for free apps? Games? Just click on the filter tabs on top. Problem is, the site isn’t working properly; some features are not quite 100%. So here’s to hoping that the people behind the site, from somewhere in the Philippines, get their act together soon. And of course, I wonder how Apple will react to this.

Apple App Store Helps Developer Earn $250,000 in Two Months

Friday, November 28th, 2008

trism-screenshot.jpgLooks like there’s a new gold rush, and it has a lot to do with the internets and companies’ newfound interest in tapping third-party development talent. Witness the case of Steve Demeter, who wrote Trism, made it available on the Apple App Store, and two months later, made $250,000. Demeter apparently spent the megabucks wisely, using the windfall to put up his own development studio.

Yahoo was right on the money when it said “companies like Apple and Microsoft (with the Xbox 360’s new Community Games channel) have begun to provide bedroom developers easy, low-cost ways to develop on hardware that was once closed off to all but the biggest games makers.” At the same time however, let’s hope these fledging online app stores do a good job of filtering out all the trash that they’ll no doubt have to deal with. Remember the $1000 iPhone App?

Apparent Gmail Vulnerability Should Make You Check Your Filters!

Sunday, November 23rd, 2008

gmail-filters.gif

I’ve been using Gmail for over two years now, for a wide variety of reasons (like conversations and inbox archiving for instance). Apparently, so do a lot of domain owners, who woke up one day to find that their online properties were stolen.

Here’s a summary: a hacker manages to gain access to a Gmail account, just enough to modify its Filters. The end result is that any emails sent by the domain registrar—including ones sent due to a “Forgot my Password” request—are forwarded to the hacker. This allows said hacker to grab control of the domain, and demand money for its return.

Thanks to online WhoIS services, which reveal the owner of a website and their email, pulling it off seems relatively easy. I’m honestly not sure if Gmail really suffers from a security flaw, but you can check out the complete details here—and check your Gmail filters just to be safe. It takes only a few seconds after all.

Broadband-enabled Game Consoles: Bye-Bye Pay TV?

Friday, November 21st, 2008

A report from research consultancy TDG predicts that portals like Microsoft’s Xbox Live and Sony’s PlayStation Network will soon become formidable competitors to incumbent Pay TV services.

Leveraging broadband-enabled game consoles as the next-generation video platforms — and bypassing cable and satellite TV operators, these companies will offer a compelling alternative to traditional TV programming by providing a more immersive, interactive video experience.

The launch of Microsoft’s Experience and the Xbox Live Netflix streaming video service is a perfect example of how potent these services will soon become. There is little doubt these services are finally ready for prime time.

Even before the launch of Experience, Microsoft’s Xbox Live had amassed some 15,000 movies (1,000 of which are HD) and some 13,000 TV shows for download-to-own. The Netflix partnership adds 12,000 movies and TV programs to the mix, all for free streaming to Netflix subscribers.

Sony’s PlayStation Network has collected close to 1,000 movies and hundreds of TV programs for download-to-own. It has also announced plans to expand dramatically its video library in the next few months in order to compete with Xbox Live.

Many thanks to Advanced-Television.

Laughable Blog Aggregator and Linking to news sources

Monday, September 22nd, 2008

I’m not going to go on another rant blasting blog aggregators that steal other people’s content (aka sploggers). However, I came across one website that took my content, re-worded one sentence and tried to claim it as its own. The change is so laughable I busted out laughing!

First, my blog entry titled Court Bans VoIP App on iPhone was one of the first if not the first U.S.-based news outlet to talk about how a German court banned the sipgate VoIP application on the iPhone. In the article, I wrote:

Apparently, the court felt that sipgate would “lure” iPhone users into “jailbreaking″ their iPhones. WTF? Banning software because it might entice customers to do something bad? Glad I live in the good ole′ freedom-loving USA where we punish people for committing crimes not for “intentions” of committing crimes, jailbreaking iPhones, violating terms of service contracts, etc.

Now compare that with the scammer over at Unwiredview.com which posted the story as though it were their own:

Apparently, the court felt that Sipgate would lure iPhone users into jailbreaking their iPhones. WTF? Banning software because it might entice customers to do something bad? Glad I live in the good ole’ freedom-loving India where we punish people for committing crimes not for “intentions” of committing crimes.

It’s virtually identical even copying my WTF outrage. However, simply change good ole’ freedom-loving ‘USA’ to ‘India’ and presto-bango, you’ve got yourself a brand-spanking ‘new’ news article! I couldn′t help but laugh at this.

Obviously, there are tons of automated blog and news site aggregators out there and I’ve learned to just ignore them. But in this case, someone actually took the time to HAND EDIT it and take out ‘USA′ and change it to ‘India’. Either their anti-USA or just very pro-India. Regardless, a pretty stupid edit job, but definitely made my day seeing such a half-ass edit job.

On a related note, a major news outlet, CBC News (Canadian Broadcasting Channel News) mentioned my story writing, “Sipgate’s Thilo Salmon told the VoIP and Gadgets blog the company was not allowed to argue its case before the Hamburg court prior to the injunction being issued” but alas they didn’t actually link to my story.

Very annoying. It’s not that I need the Page Rank from the inbound link, it’s just common courtesy to cite & link the source of the article.

Activision Goes After Individual Game Pirates

Saturday, September 20th, 2008

brunascle writes “Activision has begun suing individual pirates of console games. Edge Online is reporting that they are going after a New York resident for allegedly copying Call of Duty 3 for the Xbox 360 and other games, seeking $30,000 to $150,000 in damages for each infringement. GamePolitics has also uncovered six other lawsuits with settlements between $1,000 and $100,000, in five of which the defendant was unrepresented.” Activision’s lawyers specifically told GamePolitics that the lawsuit wasn’t targeting file-sharers, so they probably mean that the alleged pirate was reproducing and distributing physical copies of the game. The court complaint is available here (PDF).
