HP Debuts First Multi-touch Notebook — Yes HP, Not Apple (Now That’s a Surprise!!!)

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

hptx2.jpgFrom the first time Steve Jobs demonstrated “the pinch” — the two-finger gesture used to zoom in and out of photos and Web pages on the iPhone – some Apple observers assumed it was just a matter of time before a multitouch-enabled screen showed up on the Mac.

That hasn’t happened yet. But now Hewlett-Packard has beaten Apple to the punch, announcing the first multitouch-enabled notebook PC, the tx2.

We are all wondering — aren’t we — why Apple couldn’t get this out to market first?

The tx2 is a convertible notebook, meaning its screen can pivot 180 degrees to show someone else what’s on it or lie flat and act like a tablet PC.

The first convertible notebook aimed directly at consumers, the tҲ sports HP’s version of multitouch technology, which lets you use two fingers at once to manipulate images on the screen or make on-screen gestures that signify specific commands.

A pinch motion works just like it does on an iPhone or MacBook, for example, letting you rotate pictures or press and drag files around.

Pricing? $1,150 or only $151 more than the starter MacBook.

More at BusinessWeek.

HP’s iPAQ Data Messenger / Voice Messenger get official on Vodafone, hands-on treatment

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

Filed under:

Given that both the iPAQ Data Messenger and Voice Messenger were spotted on HP’s website last night, we didn’t exactly need a press release to affirm their ascent into officialdom, but hey, we’ll take it. The two WinMo 6.1-powered handsets will soon be loosed on Vodafone in Europe, and starting next month, prospective consumers can buy in for £399 ($677) / £333 ($565) off-contract; as for the subsidized rates, you’ll have to hold your horses for those. If you’re just interested in the hands-on video, however, you can mosey on beyond the break and mash play.

HP iPAQ Data Messenger / Voice Messenger handhelds emerge

Monday, October 20th, 2008

Filed under:

Looks like that rumor was mostly spot on, as two new consumer-minded iPAQ handhelds have emerged on HP’s website. Without much fanfare, the Windows Mobile 6.1-powered iPAQ Data Messenger and Voice Messenger have been granted dedicated sites, complete with imagery, specifications and recommended accessories. Starting with the touchscreen-heavy Data Messenger (seen above), you’ll find a 2.81-inch LED-backlit display (320 x 240), a full QWERTY slide-out keyboard, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR / WiFi, HSDPA, quad-band GSM support, aGPS, a 3.1-megapixel camera and a microSD card slot. As for the Voice Messenger (pictured after the break), it’s packing a 2.4-inch 320 x 240 LED-backlit screen, a 20-key “keyboard” and most everything else already mentioned on its big bro. There’s nary a clue on pricing or a release date, but we imagine both of those snippets will reveal themselves shortly.

More pics of Apple’s supposed new laptops surface

Thursday, October 9th, 2008

Filed under:

Oh Apple — release some new laptops so this madness can end. The forums at MacRumors are abuzz over a Taiwanese site that’s showing off pictures of what appears to be a very close cousin of that MacBook Pro-esque casing we saw earlier. This isn’t the same model, surely, but it does bear a striking similarity in both design and materials — and after lots of deliberation and comparisons, we′re fairly sure this isn’t the Air either (the hinge ends in a totally different spot in relation to the keys). That machined quality we noted in the earlier post is present, though as we said previously, the sides of these housings do look like separate pieces. Regardless, if any of this is even remotely true (and not another Photoshop from someone’s mother’s basement), Apple is indeed taking its laptops in an Air direction, which isn’t surprising — but signs of these being the end-result of new manufacturing process? The jury’s still way out. One more pic after the break of that controversial side piece.

Friday, October 3rd, 2008

Filed under:

Here she is — the world’s first DSLR to capture 720p HD movie footage. But let’s be honest, the high-def action is just a cherry on top of Nikon’s D90 ($1,299 kit $999 body only), as the expansive Live View LCD, high ISO options and heralded image quality are the real draws. You’ve already heard what the experts in the field had to say, but if you’re just lookin’ for some old fashioned gadget glamour shots to get your weekend started right, take all the time you need in the gallery below.

The G1 gets a near-complete unboxing, we get totally jealous

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008

Filed under:

Well we see where this is headed. It was nice to catch a few of those quasi-unboxing pics of the T-Mobile G1 the other day, but now the cats and kittens at TmoNews have gone and gotten pretty much the full monty. If you want to get a taste of what’s to come, here’s the perfect chance. You can check out photos of the Android device being wrenched from its packaging, as well as some glamour shots of the bundled accessories — including a bizarrely retro remote on the earbuds and “handsome” carrying pouch. October 22nd, you can’t come soon enough.

Nero LiquidTV | TiVo PC gets unboxed

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

For TiVo fans, there’s no denying that the Nero LiquidTV | TiVo PC holds a lot of promise. Granted, it is arriving mighty late to a party that’s been rockin′ for some time now, but TiVo mixed with PC just sounds so, so good. Engadget HD was able to grab hold of a unit and unbox the thing for all to see, and as you wait for a review in the near future, let us encourage you to enjoy the gallery right over yonder.

Erector’s WiFi-enabled Spykee Spy Robot unboxed and toyed with

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

Filed under:

Erector’s WiFi-enabled Spykee robot hasn’t even begun to ship to mere mortals just yet, but through some random acts of wizardry, Sven was able to grab hold of one and give it the ole unboxing / impressions treatment (on video, no less). It could be the novelty factor, but he seemed pretty stoked with the whole package, and the clip waiting in the read link gives some real hard-hitting insight as to whether or not this $300 character deserves a spot in your family. Give it a watch, won’t you?

Digital TV Transition Already Has Hiccups

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

tv2.jpg Earlier this week, Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Kevin Martin flipped an oversize, symbolic switch in Wilmington, NC, to celebrate the city’s early transition to all-digital TV signals.

The first!

And guess what, by later that day, the FCC had already fielded several hundred calls from local residents who weren’t able to watch TV.

All of which did not seem to surprise Martin: “I’m sure we′re still going to hear from people who weren’t prepared,” he said early in the day. “But the bigger question is: What did we learn here that we can replicate around the country?”

Indeed!

Will shall see … Sometimes those lessons take a while to sink in.

Read more about it in The Washington Post.

D-Link DSM-330 media streamer gets Flash video support — Hulu on your TV

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008

Filed under:

D-Link’s $230 DSM-330 media streamer has always been among the most flexible set-top boxes out there, and it’s just gotten even better, with the latest DivX Connected server software bringing Flash video support to the device. It’s not quite browse-and-play — every site requires a specific plug-in — but Hulu, College Humor, YouTube, ABC News, and Vimeo are already working, and there are more on the way. That’s pretty tempting for two bills, but we’ll stick to rocking PlayOn with our 360 and PS3.

Canon churns out HF11 / HG21 HD camcorders

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

Filed under:

No sooner did we have a chance to wrap our mitts around JVC’s Everio GZ-HD40 and Samsung’s SC-HMX20C than Canon comes out with a pair of its own. Kicking things off is the iVIS H᭣ (which turned up in name back in April) — an HD camcorder with 32GB of built-in memory, an SD / SDHC card slot, Full HD recording capabilities (using the polarizing AVCHD format) and a 12x optical zoom. The iVIS HG21 (pictured after the break) relates most closely to the aforementioned HD40, as it packs a capacious 120GB internal HDD, 2.7-inch flip-out LCD and most of the same specifications as its sibling. Expect ‘em both to land next month (at least in Japan) for ¥140,000 ($1,317) apiece.

Apple looks to OTA downloads for 3G iPhone, record labels look for cash

Monday, May 19th, 2008

Filed under:

According to a churning rumor-mill, Apple desperately wants to make over-the-air downloads of iTunes content a reality on the 3G iPhone. Apparently, a record label executive “familiar with the discussions” states that the Cupertino gang is hoping for a “big launch in June” which includes OTA music downloads, ringtone sales, and ringback tones (the substitute music you hear instead of a ring when calling someone). There’s only one problem: the labels want a higher premium for those services than a typical MP3 download. Of course, Apple’s iTunes pricing has been a point of contention for some time, though its recent rule-bending for HBO could lead to upped charges for the new services. Something tells us Apple has the tenacity and bullheadedness to make this work — let’s just hope they can temper the labels′ greed with the end user’s economic realities.

Sprint and Clearwire merge next-gen wireless businesses, goes by Clearwire

Wednesday, May 7th, 2008

Filed under:

Well, what do you know? Sometimes even the the most repetitive of rumors finally comes true. Barely 12 hours after the Wall Street Journal reported that a deal between Sprint, Clearwire and just about everyone else was dangerously close to going down, it seems as if the bottom lines have indeed been signed. Details are pretty light at the moment, but we definitively know that Sprint Nextel Corp. and Clearwire Corp. will be merging their “next-generation wireless broadband businesses to form a new wireless communications company.” Quite simply, the new outfit will be called Clearwire, even though Sprint will hold around 51-percent of the firm, while existing Clearwire shareholders will own 27-percent and the new investors will hold 22-percent. New investors? Ah yes, Intel, Google, Comcast, Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks will collectively invest $3.2 billion in the new company, but that figure is “based on a target price of $20 a share of Clearwire’s common stock, and is subject to a post-closing adjustment.”

Xbox 360 HD DVD drives going for €9.99 in Ireland

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

And you thought $49.99 was cheap. Word on the street has it that Microsoft’s Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on, which has been seen as slightly less valuable since Toshiba pulled the plug on the once mighty red format, has stooped to €9.99 across the pond. For those not savvy on the absurd devaluation of the US dollar, we’re talking $15.47 — and that’s with a Media Center remote bundled in, too. We’re totally straight-faced when we say that’s actually not a half bad deal if you’re a fan of the media already out there, but the parsimonious among us are definitely waiting for these to come bundled with our favorite cereals before pulling the trigger.

[Thanks, Conor]
