Nike+ SportBand gets reviewed

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

Filed under:

For those breaking into a sweat trying to decide whether or not the Nike+ SportBand is really worth your hard earned dollars / euros / pounds / Schrutebucks, simmer on down. The runners over at the Stuff offices have snapped one up and tossed out their two pence. Summarized as a “Nike+iPod system without music,” the unit was given fairly high marks all around. It was noted that calibration was highly recommended before taking on the London Marathon, but that setup was a real lesson in simplicity. Design wise, most everything was kosher save for the detachable face (Link USB drive) that may not fit perfectly in slim laptops sitting flush on a table and the non-backlit display that proved difficult to see at night. Believe it or not, critics still found the SportBand to be a joy to use despite the aforesaid quirks, but given the drawbacks, we’d certainly recommend trying out a pal’s before throwing down for your own.

Nintendo confirms: May-bound Wii Fit priced at $89.99

Tuesday, April 15th, 2008

Filed under:

Nothing like a little reassurance on tax day, right? We already knew that GameStop was gearing up to offer Nintendo’s Wii Fit for $89.99, but now the Big N has stepped in to affirm said price point. Beginning on May 19th here in the US, Wii Fit, along with the bundled Wii Balance Board, will be sold together for a penny under $90. And for those located near New York City, you can score a sweat rag, er, Wii Fit t-shirt if you’re one of the first 1,000 to lay down a $5 deposit at the Nintendo World store between April 18 - 20. Bonus points if you run there, we swear.

Nike+ SportBand purchased early, unboxed for all to see

Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

Filed under:

Nah, it’s not April 10th just yet (in most of the world, at least), but one particular bloke managed to score one of Nike’s new SportBands at a London marathon exhibition today. The going rate on that side of the pond was &pound40 ($78), but we wouldn’t mind that dreadful exchange rate too much if you’re curious about eventual US pricing. Nevertheless, feel free to tap the read link to peep the unit fresh out of its packaging, but be forewarned, there aren’t any surprises.

[Thanks, Terry]

Panasonic Toughbook 19 gets Core 2 Duo, expanded memory

Tuesday, March 25th, 2008

While Panasonic’s rugged Toughbook 30 has been strutting its stuff with a Core 2 Duo within, the poor, poor Toughbook 19 has been going without. No more, however, as Panny has just announced that it’ll be boosting the speed and expanding the memory available in the beastly convertible tablet. Available now, the 5.1-pound rig is stuffed with a 1.06GHz U7500 processor (2MB L2 cache), up to 4GB of SDRAM, 80GB shock-mounted HDD, 10.4-inch daylight-readable display, a battery good for around seven hours, optional integrated WWAN / GPS / 2-megapixel webcam and a magnesium alloy case that won′t mind getting trampled. So, what’s the price for such an (almost) impossible-to-destroy machine? $3,199 and up, we’re afraid.

Panasonic’s DMC-TZ50: a TZ5 with WiFi and Picasa photo sharing, maybe

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008

Filed under:

Take Panasonic’s 9.1 megapixel TZ5 with 10x optical zoom and 3-inch LCD, slap in some 802.11b/g WiFi and what do you get? This, the Lumix DMC-TZ50. As with most WiFi cameras, the TZ50 can upload your pictures from any WiFi hotspot but is then locked into specific image sharing sites; in this case, Panny’s own Lumix Club. There is hope for a more open model, however, when the TZ50 goes global. After all, the Panasonic / T-Mobile WiFi demo we saw at CES tied images to Google’s Picasa. Ok, it’s not Flickr but it’s a start. Available May 16th in Japan for ¥49,800 or about $500.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX500 features touchscreen, 720p movie mode

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

Filed under:

If Panasonic’s Lumix DMC-F𕦴 skipped out on PMA in order to get fitted with a touchscreen LCD monitor and HD recording capabilities, we’d say it was certainly a smart move. This well-spec’d shooter sports a pocket-friendly design, a 10.1-megapixel sensor, a 25-millimeter ultra-wide-angle lens, 3-inch touchscreen, 5x optical zoom and a swank movie mode capable of logging clips at 1,280 x 720 at 30fps. For those worried about said feature chewing through their SD / SDHC card (or the 50MB of built-in memory), WVGA (848 x 480) and VGA (640 x 480) video modes are available as well. You’ll also find such niceties as optical image stabilization, red-eye correction, face detection and Auto Focus tracking for good measure. Drooling yet? Chew on the choice of black or silver and get your $399.95 ready to drop come May.

Panasonic SV-SD870N D-snap DAP goes 100 hours strong

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

Nah, Panasonic’s SV-S𐴆N isn’t the longest lasting DAP we’ve ever laid eyes upon, but few would find the courage to kvetch over 100 hours on a full charge. The latest in Panasonic’s D-snap lineup, this unit promises to cut out “83-percent” of surrounding noise (and a good chunk of battery life) at the press of a button and supports SD / SDHC cards along with direct recording if plugged into a D-dock device. Furthermore, this one is set to arrive in red, black, silver, blue and white motifs, come stocked with a 2GB SD card, boast USB 2.0 connectivity and play nice with AAC, WMA and MP3 file formats. Quite frankly, we’re still a little turned off by that interface, but those unconcerned with such matters can slip one in their pocket next month.

Sprint layoffs start at the top

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

Filed under:

Well, not the very top — give the guy a chance, will ya! — but it’s clear that heads are already starting to roll at Sprint Nextel following last week’s disastrous report of subscriber churn, with the company’s chief financial officer, chief marketing officer, and president of sales and distribution effectively getting the boot as of tomorrow. In respective order, Paul Saleh, Tim Kelly, and Mark Angelino will all be “stepping down” on Friday, according to the Wall Street Journal (subscription required) — the first casualties of a planned 4,000 head count reduction. CFO Saleh is getting replaced in the interim by Senior Vice President and Controller William Arendt, and the other two positions will be temporarily filled by unnamed executives. Sprint lost 639,000 valuable postpaid customers in the fourth quarter, and taking a look at our decidedly unscientific poll may give you some idea why.

Rock Band Stage Kit with lights, smoke leaked by GameStop

Sunday, January 13th, 2008

As if playing Rock Band wasn’t one of the greatest group gaming experiences to come around in years, it appears that a new accessory is set to amp up the fun even more by bringing an “interactive light and smoke stage show” to your already thrashing performances. Apparently you can already pre-order this so-called Rock Band Stage Kit from GameStop for 100 bucks, although they’ve since pulled the box image from the product page, so you’ll have to rely on the screencap above to see what you’re paying all that money for. Ships on June 23rd, according to the retailer’s site, giving us plenty of time to install a proper stage and stadium seating in our game room.

Hands-on with the ASUS M50 and M70 terabyte laptops

Thursday, January 10th, 2008

After we heard ASUS stepped into Crazytown with two new terabyte-capacity laptops, we knew we had to swing by the booth and bust out our cameras. It seems like the company has really been stepping up its game both on the design and spec front, with a solid build from the sleek black top and touchpad-integrated media controller, straight on down to the Core 2 Duo CPUs and — of course — the ultra-gigantic storage space. Peep the gallery below for a full on tour of the two systems.

DIY head-tracker takes Wiimote hacking to dizzying new heights

Friday, December 21st, 2007

Filed under:

DIY virtuoso Johnny Chung Lee has already more than proven himself with his Wiimote whiteboard and finger-tracking hacks (to say nothing of the famous $14 steadycam), but he now looks to have vaulted himself into a whole new league with his latest project, which uses a Wiimote for a full-on VR head-tracking system. As with his other recent hacks, the Wiimote and a sensor bar substitute swap their usual positions, with a pair of IR-equipped safety glasses stylishly getting the job done in this case. Toss in some custom-made software (available at the link below) and you′ve got a setup that’s sure to make anyone’s jaw drop. Whatever you do, be sure to hit up the video after the break (and watch ’till the end), as the image above certainly doesn’t do it justice.

Wiimote repurposed for multi-point interactive whiteboard

Monday, December 10th, 2007

Filed under:

While certainly there’s been no shortage of Wiimote hacks, the number of genuinely useful ones has been considerably more limited. It looks like you can now add one more to that list, however, as Johnny Chung Lee (he of the Wiimote finger-tracking hack) has now upped the usefulness even further with a makeshift multi-point interactive whiteboard. There’s a bit more involved with this one than just a Wiimote, however — namely, an IR-emitting pen (or two), which the Wiimote tracks while relaying all the necessary information back to a PC. That, as the video after the break shows, allows you to turn any surface into a multi-point whiteboard with the use of a projector, or turn any LCD screen into a touchscreen, of sorts. Best of all, Johnny has kindly provided the necessary software free of charge, so hit up the read link below if you want to give it a shot.
