HTC CEO expects to move 600,000 G1s this year, more in 2009

Sunday, October 26th, 2008

Filed under:

With all sorts of outlandish figures being bandied about regarding sales / expectations for the T-Mobile ˇ, someone intimately close to the situation has finally chimed in with his take. Peter Chou, chief executive and co-founder of HTC, stated in a recent interview that it expects to ship over 600,000 G1s this year, and while he wouldn′t come clean on an exact figure for 2009, he did proclaim that “in general, we think we can do more next year.” We aren′t betting the farm that his prediction will come true or anything, but it certainly falls within the realm of feasibility. Oh, and if you were wondering how Mr. Chou planned on convincing potential iPhone buyers to opt for the G1 instead, he reckons that the full QWERTY keypad will handle that for him — after all, “Americans are very keyboard-oriented.”

Nokia survey finds that many Americans work on the can, the definition of common knowledge

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

We already know that a solid chunk of Britons use mobile internet while in the throes of passion, and now Captain Obvious (today known as Nokia) has awkwardly landed to tell the world that Americans do too. A recent survey, which we can only imagine was absolutely thrilling to conduct, found that some 53% of working Americans “have been interrupted by a work-related phone call or e-mail while in the bathroom.” Furthermore, some 23% have allowed a call / e-mail to interrupt them while on a date, but that’s probably because 59% of those polled never, ever turn off their mobile. Just think — the next time your buddy answers with a hint of stress in his / her voice, there’s a statistically significant chance that you′re barging in on some seriously personal business.

No ♥ for High-end Mobile Apps

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

Thought I’d share this interesting report from Accenture about mobile phone app utilization that claims higher-end applications remain vastly under-used by U.S. consumers. Funny, I think Apple iPhone users might disagree. The report found that 88 percent of U.S. consumers said they never use their mobile phones or other mobile devices to watch videos. That is high, but expected since most mobile phones can’t even play videos. My main phone, a Windows Mobile 6.1 smart phone doesn’t even natively support Youtube Flash videos using Pocket Internet Explorer. I did install Skyfire though, which adds pretty respectable video performance. I was able to watch Youtube videos on my Windows Mobile with pretty decent video quality, but of course I′m not the ‘typical’ mobile phone user.

The report adds that 84 percent said they never use their mobile phones or mobile devices to send email. Say what? Email is only 4 pts better than video? I would have expected email penetration to be much better, especially with all the Blackberry phones. People want email access on their phone more than any other app, but maybe that’s just my opinion. Further, the report says 79 percent said they never employ them to play games on the go. So more people played games on their phone than sent email? You’ve got to be kidding me. How is that possible? I suppose many phones come with cheezy built-in games, which might skew the results.

Anyway, read the report for yourself…

ZeeVee's ZvBox user interface

If you’ve been looking for a way to stream any HD web content — we do mean any: Hulu, mkv, Amazon — to any HDTV in the house, without running any new wires, dealing with the woes of WiFi, or even needing yet another box hanging off your shiny new HDTV; you should head on over to Engadget HD and read all about ZeeVee’s ZvBox. We take the $500 box and put it through the paces to see if broadcasting your own QAM HD channel is worth the price.

ITEXPO Live Video Streaming!

Friday, September 19th, 2008

This blog entry will show live video streaming (via my Windows Mobile 6.1 phone’s camera) of various ITEXPO events, including keynotes, receptions, and of course the exhibit hall. I’m going to broadcast starting at 3:30pm PT (6:30 ET) when Skype’s Johnathan Christensen and Microsoft’s Xuedong Huang and Sonus Network’s Vikram Saksena will be keynoting. So if you couldn’t make it to ITEXPO, you’ll at least be able to see the keynotes in just a few hours.

I’ll also livecast the show floor when it opens. I’m going to “future date” this post so it stays on the very top of my blog’s home page. I’ll update this blog post as I find out exact times I will be live video blogging.

Live Video Feed (when available) follows:

Friday, September 12th, 2008

Well, thought I’d do a live streaming test from my Windows Mobile 6.1 X󓦌 mobile phone in preparation for Internet Telephony Expo (ITEXPO) next week. I plan on live streaming portions of the show, which you′ll be able to watch via my blog. I may do some video interviews as well.

This streaming video test will last until at least 11am.

Microsoft just announced Universal, and NBC Universal programming is coming to Xbox Live, delivering The Office, Monk, Battlestar Galactica, The Mummy, Bourne Supremacy and others to the service. Broadcast Flag rides again, courtesy of NBC & Microsoft?

Sunday, May 18th, 2008

Just like efforts to close the analog hole, our old friend the broadcast flag (don’t remember what that is and how it was defeated? Take a quick trip back to 2005 with us) has reared it’s ugly head again. Displaying the kind of tenacity rarely seen outside of horror movie villains and potential presidential candidates, some Vista Media Center users have apparently gotten the above popup while trying to record broadcast TV from NBC. Since the FCC regulation giving the broadcast flag it’s power to remotely disable your recording ability was overturned, not only should it not be enabled, there’s no reason the system should respond if it were. The EFF’s working with the makers of the HDHomeRun to find out why this happened at all (although it’s not the first time); whether it’s an honest mistake somewhere or if Microsoft slipped a bit of extra DRM into its latest OS.

WD’s 500GB My DVR Expander drives certified for use with DISH HD DVRs

Friday, May 16th, 2008

From what we can tell, this is just marketing hoopla to get you to buy a drive “certified” for use in a particular application; in all actuality, users can connect any USB 2.0 external hard drive to their DISH Network HD DVR and expand their storage capacity for a one-time fee. Nevertheless, Western Digital has just let loose its 500GB My DVR Expander, which “more than doubles” your available recording hours by storing up to 300 hours of SD content and 60 hours of high-def goodness. As predicted, the drives work with the satcaster’s ViP family of HD DVRs, and WD is apparently looking to expand the brand to other carriers as soon as they get with the program and enable USB storage. Those willing to fall for this ploy can procure the half-terabyte drive for $149.99, but considering that the port activation fee is still charged, we can’t imagine looking elsewhere first.

Counterpath acquires Bridgeport Networks

Tuesday, February 5th, 2008

Bridgeport Networks has always held a lot of promise with their Fixed Mobile Convergence (FMC) offerings. They never seemed to gain a lot of traction in the market, but perhaps that’s because they were a few years ahead of the market. I believe that now the time for FMC has come and it looks like Counterpath, provider of the popular X-Lite SIP softphone, acquisition of Bridgeport Networks could be a nice addition to their VoIP portfolio. Counterpath obviously sees the mobile phone space as a huge opportunity for their VoIP products. This will be an interesting acquisition to watch.

Full release after the jump…

MusicGiants launches VideoGiants, with HD movies from Paramount

Wednesday, January 9th, 2008

The HD digital distribution club just got a little bigger, as lossless audio distributor MusicGiants is launching its VideoGiants service with 250 movies from Paramount, and additional content from HDNet. Available in 1080p or 1080i WMV format, users can purchase the movies in 10-packs for $159 delivered via Seagate hard drives or, in a few months, one at a time via direct download to a home media server. After that, it can be viewed via the media PC or Media Extender (including Xbox 360). MusicGiants has been selling HD audio tracks to high end home theater owners via its network of dealers and installers for about two years, with plans to make this type of service available to the mass market soon. Still think the future of HD content is on shiny discs?

Amazon Kindle gutted for your viewing pleasure

Friday, November 30th, 2007

Filed under:

What is it with this sick pleasure we derive from watching beloved devices torn to pieces by ruthless uber-nerds? Who knows, but it certainly isn’t getting old just yet. Amazon’s Kindle got just such treatment at the hands of RapidRepair, and if you’re one of those doubters that was never quite sold on the Kindle’s quirky 90’s aesthetic, maybe this will change your mind. Or not.

Amazon Kindle available now on Amazon — free EV-DO!

Monday, November 19th, 2007

var digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/gadgets/Amazon_Kindle_now_available_free_EVDO’; It’s here and looking just as busted as it did when we broke the Amazon Kindle eBook reader for you last year. $399 (and free 2 day shipping) with access to 88,000 books including 100 of the 112 New York Times best sellers. No WiFi here, Amazon’s Whispernet service is FREE and based on Sprint’s EVDO: “Amazon pays for Kindle’s wireless connectivity so you will never see a monthly wireless bill for shopping the Kindle Store.” Whispernet allows Kindle owners to wirelessly shop the Kindle Store, dowload and receive content and works out the box — no setup required. All new release books cost $9.99 as do books found on the NYT best sellers list. Newspaper subscriptions cost $5.99 to $14.99 per month and Kindle Magazines cost between $1.25 and $3.49 per month — each is available for a free 2 week trial. Oddly, blogs will cost you $0.99 per month to subscribe. All purchased content is stored as a backup on Amazon’s site. Running down the specs again: internal storage for 200 titles (more via SD expansion), battery that lasts for days (2 hour recharge), 10.3 ounces, built-in dictionary and Wikipedia, and plenty more. While the reader itself could be mistaken for a Handspring device from the 90s, the service itself certainly makes for a compelling proposition.
