ITAMI FiTrainer headset: it’s like a coach on your head

Saturday, October 25th, 2008

Remember that Body Trainer headset unveiled by Sega Toys earlier this year? If not, there’s hardly a better time to refresh your memory given that it’s coming to US soil via ITAMI. The rebadged FiTrainer comes equipped with a heart sensor and built-in one-liners to keep you going when your muscles are just dying to return to the couch. ITAMI also has the nerve to claim that “Wii Fit is history, while the FiTrainer is the future.” At any rate, the headset packs a trio of exercise modes — walking, jogging and aerobics — and by utilizing proprietary algorithms and subliminal encouragement from a variety of Pokémons, it tells you exactly how to exercise in order to “achieve maximum results.” We’re only told that the device is “coming soon,” but you can certainly procrastinate signing up to hear more so that you completely avoid ever bringing this nuisance / assistant into your life.

Wii Fit set to outpace Grand Theft Auto IV — gamer geeks weep, gnash teeth

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

Unafraid to incite elitist gamer geek unrest, respected video game industry analyst Michael Pachter has supported a prediction by GigaOM that Wii Fit will outsell Grand Theft Auto IV this year. Yeah, you read right: the latest entry into what is arguably the biggest hardcore video game franchise around is gonna get whooped by an exercise tool — we’re not shocked, we’re just laughing. GTʎ was dominating at first, but with time interest has waned while Wii Fit and its included Balance Board peripheral have stayed hot despite supply shortages. Nintendo’s hardware-focused strategy seems to be working the Balance Board install base is approaching 12 million, or roughly 30% of all Wii owners. You can bet it′ll be put to good use in future games and other, less mainstream applications even after folks have given up on losing weight and resigned themselves once more to lifelong loneliness.

HTC’s first WiMAX-enabled handset revealed: T8290, from Russia with Speed

Friday, October 10th, 2008

With Sprint snagging the vast majority of the WiMAX limelight of late, we aren’t going to complain with a similar network halfway across the globe yanking it back. Out of absolutely nowhere comes HTC’s first WiMAX-enabled handset, the sure-to-be-delightful T8290. Reportedly, this bugger packs a 3.8-inch 800 x 480 resolution display, 802.11g WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0, GSM and WiMAX radios and is expected to launch soon on Russia’s Yota. Granted, we can′t take this as hard truth or anything quite yet, but the images that reside in the read link are more than convincing. Oh, and HTC — given that you′re passing on the US with the Touch HD, do you think it’d be possible to get this over here for use with XOHM? We’d really, really appreciate it.

T-Mobile G1 manual leaks out

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

It’s going to be a few weeks yet until your unwashed hands are touching an actual G1, so how’d you like some reading material to pass the days in the meantime? T-Mobile has trotted out its first Android phone’s user’s manual — probably not on purpose, if we had to guess — and there are some interesting little morsels in there that′d be even more interesting if you actually had the phone in front of you. For example, did you know the G1 had a status light? Don’t see those too often these days. You’ve also got a full rundown of the notification icons, apps (including the Android flavor of T-Mobile’s myFaves app), and — get this — procedure for battery removal. Fancy that! [Warning: PDF link]

Helio Ocean 2 arrives at the FCC

Friday, September 19th, 2008

Filed under:

Looks like we′re inching ever closer to getting our paws on the mythical Helio Ocean 2 — the fun-loving regulators at the FCC just added a Pantech OZII dual-slider handset with Helio branding to their all-knowing database. Nothing you couldn′t have guessed here — QVGA display, EV-DO, 2 megapixel cam with video, full HTML browser, A2DP support — but hey, this is The Phone That Could Have But Didn′t Save Helio, you know? It’s alright to be excited.

Helio’s Ocean 2 coming — but not until 2009

Friday, September 12th, 2008

Filed under:

This is one of those classic tales of joy and sorrow — a tale of a phone that could′ve been Helio’s undisputed flagship model of the year, a phone that could′ve saved the scrappy little MVNO from Virgin Mobile’s gaping maw (alright, it couldn’t have even come close to doing that, but we’re running with it for the drama factor). On the high side, we’ve now heard confirmation straight from the source that the Ocean 2 is, in fact, a real device, but the problem is that it won’t be coming out until next year because they “want to put it out when it’s the best it can be.” It’s sure looking just about the “best it can be” from the videos we’ve seen recently — and frankly, we think they should just throw this out there while kicking off development on an Ocean 3 ASAP — but it looks like the decision’s already been made, and we all know there’s no such thing as moving a release date forward.

Logitech to produce “premium” Guitar Hero: World Tour instruments

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

If you didn’t think every single third-party peripheral provider would try to snag a piece of the band game pie, we guess you thought wrong, huh? With outfits like Mad Catz and Ion already jumping in, it was only a matter of time before Logitech threw on its tightest jeans, blacked out its blond hair and threw up some horns. Details are admittedly scarce, but the company has promised to provide “premium instruments” for Guitar Hero: World Tour on PS2, PS3, Xbox 360 and the Wii. Rockers can expect the new gear to start shipping “later this year,” though prices, designs and pretty much anything else of importance remains a mystery.

Nintendo failed to notify third-party devs of MotionPlus prior to E3

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008

Filed under:

We weren’t terribly impressed with Nintendo’s recently unveiled MotionPlus add-on, but we′re even more disappointed by this. Reportedly, scads of third-party developers revealed at ʵ that the Big N’s latest Wiimote accessory was just as much a surprise to them as it was to any of us. In other words, Nintendo didn’t bother giving its external devs any advance notice in order to get the ball rolling on compatible titles, or so it seems. Unfortunately, this also means that we probably won’t see any MotionPlus-ready games hitting shelves from anyone not named Nintendo for months to come, but it’s not like Wii Sports Resort can’t hold our attention for a solid year, right?

D-Link’s Internet Surveillance kit lets you see two rooms over

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

Filed under:

Okay, let’s get this straight. If D-Link is marketing its new $499.95 Internet Surveillance Starter Kit (and $399.95 Expansion Kit, for the hardcore snoopers) as a method for spying on someone residing within your domicile (save for your infant), you probably need a family counselor — not a gimmicky IP camera. Now, if D-Link is hoping to tickle the fancy of geeks who’d rather check out a room in low resolution rather than taking four or five steps down the hall, we’re pretty terrified about the fate of humanity. Still, the weird(est) part about this thing is the D-Life website which it ties into. Video of your home piped through someone else’s servers — need we say more?

Olympus announces 360-degree CCD sensor prototype, surveillance firms drool

Monday, June 30th, 2008

Filed under:

Around this time last year, we got wind of CCD-based projectors and cameras from Olympus that were outfitted with a curious “axial symmetrical free curved surface lens.” Now, said company is finally providing a few details about its current prototype, which essentially enables 360-degree photographs to be taken. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on perspective), the sensor isn’t quite ready to be pushed out into the world, but as you can certainly imagine, it’ll likely make a B-line for surveillance outfits just as soon as it’s ready.

Vintage Mr. Microphone hacked into spy device

Monday, June 16th, 2008

We’ve seen the viewfinder of a VHS camcorder hacked into a night-vision headset, but this just might be even more retro than that. For those old seasoned enough to remember Ronco’s Mr. Microphone, you may recall just how boring it became after a few short minutes of use. If you somehow managed to not discard the thing over the years, we’ve found the perfect use for it: a discrete spying device. Essentially, DIYers can strip the innards out, re-solder a few pieces and shove the resulting tidbits into an unassuming air freshener. From there, just tune to whatever open frequency you can find and you’ve got yourself a wireless eavesdropping tool like no other. Video after the break.

RIM allows Indian government to monitor Blackberry network

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

Filed under:

Well, it took longer than 15 days to reach a resolution, but apparently RIM is going to back down and allow the Indian government to monitor the Blackberry network in that country. What’s worse, it appears that RIM was more interested in covering its own ass than protecting user data during the negotiations: the only concession the company received from the Indian government was a promise that it won’t be held liable if there’s a leak of users’ personal information. Yeah, that ought to provide a sparkling incentive to keep things safe. There’s no word on when monitoring might begin, but we′ve got a feeling privacy-loving Indians might suddenly be in the market for a new smartphone.

UK planning to monitor and record every phone call, web page, and email sent by citizens

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

Filed under:

We’re not sure if these plans will ever make it to reality, but the Telegraph is reporting that Britain’s Home Office is working on database designed to store the details of every phone call, email, and web page accessed by British citizens in the previous year. The idea is to have various telecom providers hand over their records, which will all go into the database and then accessible by police upon receipt of a court order. Of course, there’s no reason why police couldn’t simply ask the ISPs for the appropriate data when they get that court order, since records are required to be kept for a year, but sometimes it’s important for a government to build a massive scary database of personal information with endless potential for abuse by embittered low-level bureaucrats, you know? The plan is still in draft stages, so hopefully it dies on the table — and if not, well, the NSA welcomes you with open arms, British expats.

Researchers tout 20 million processor-strong supercomputer to study climate change

Wednesday, May 7th, 2008

Filed under:

It looks like a group of researchers at UC Berkeley have come up with a rather unique way of solving the problem of getting supercomputers past the processing power / energy consumption barrier, with them now touting the possibility of using millions of low-power embedded microprocessors instead of conventional server processors. That tantalizing prospect has apparently already lead to a deal with Tensilica Inc, which will provide the Berkeley researchers with some of its Xtensa LX extensible processor cores to use as the “basic building blocks in a massively parallel system design.” Ultimately, the researchers say they could one day build a massive supercomputer consisting of 20 million embedded microprocessors at a cost of $75 million, which they say would have a power consumption of less than 4 megawatts and a peak performance of 200 petaflops. That, they say, would be enough for it to create climate models at 1-kilometer scale or, as the researchers put it, more than 1,000 times more powerful than anything available today.
