After suffering a presumed Jolly Rancher infestation, ASUS is prepped to loose these artificially flavored Eee PCs onto Korea. Available for pre-order now, the limited edition “pink” (hey, that’s what they say) and Jell-O green Eee PC 901 and Eee PC 1000H ship on the 22nd of August for an undetermined price. Hmmm, blood-red snowflakes and glo-stick mistletoe? Feels like Christmas in our very own Eee PC hell.

On a typical day, anything shown off at CTIA with a “coming in 2010″ sticker would cause some serious unrest, but given that we′ve already found that LTE is eons (or so it feels) away, we’re just taking things in stride. The MSV prototype shown above will purportedly become a proud member of the L-Series, and its satellite / cellular hybrid system will enable it to play nice on traditional cell bands as well as snag sat coverage anywhere in North America. Apparently the firm is planning on shooting up a pair of birds in 2009 as well as landing a deal with an undisclosed US carrier, and the 0.6-inch thick unit itself should feature a 480 x 320 multi-touch screen, WiFi and an integrated camera. No word on a price just yet, but feel free to check back in a few years.

Sure, Ralph de la Vega was chatty at yesterday’s AT&T luncheon during CTIA, but with the scattered reports you’ve probably seen, it’s hard to keep tabs on it all. On the topic of Android — the Google OS which the company had been reluctant to make a definitive ruling on — de la Vega seemed to soften up to the possibility. According to the exec, meetings with the search giant have reassured him that carriers will be able to equip handsets with their own applications, not just Google’s tools. “That’s attractive to us. We were concerned that maybe the focus was just on Google apps,” he said. Of course, other than vague pleasantries about the possibilities of the operating system, de la Vega wasn’t concrete about actual Android phones in the pipeline, saying, “If it’s good for customers we’ll offer it like any other OS.” Bottom line? They’re not exactly storming into the OHA, but if they see something they like, they won’t look the other way.

Late last year, we were still wondering whether LTE even had the backing to keep up with WiMAX. Fast forward to CTIA 2008, and my, how the tables have turned. Vodafone, which already teamed up with Verizon in order to initiate an LTE trial in 2008, urged the rest of the wireless sector to put its support squarely behind Long Term Evolution. Vodafone Group’s CEO, Arun Sarin, suggested that we could all see mobile internet speeds more similar to those enjoyed on the PC today if the industry “rallied around one broadband standard,” specifically noting that “we need to look at LTE as an all-encompassing standard.” The push comes hot on the heels of Sprint’s unfortunate delay of its XOHM WiMAX network, but it should be noted that infrastructure vendors in attendance tended to feel that the two would coexist at least in the short term. Sheesh, let’s just forget this whole LTE / WiMAX spat and place our bets on TD-SCDMA.

Fresh out of the FCC’s lair comes a new pair of QChat-enabled mobiles ready to launch on Sprint: Sanyo’s Pro-200 and Pro-700. Unsurprisingly getting official at CTIA, the pair of Nextel Direct Connect devices can handle all the hot PTT action you could ask for, and while the Pro-200 (shown above) checks in with Bluetooth, messaging capabilities and mobile e-mail, the beefier brother (pictured after the jump) touts a ruggedized shell “certified to military standards for dust, shock and vibration.” Curiously, the duo is only expected to go on sale in “limited markets” this month, with availability popping up elsewhere in due time those eager to get their chirp on can plan on dropping $49.99 / $69.99 on contract, respectively.
[Thanks, Colton]

Live from the heart-pounding, pulse-racing showfloor of Macworld 2008, we bring you a full frontal hands-on of Axiotron’s long-awaited Modbook — the MacBook tablet conversion. After all the waiting and wondering, we’re not totally blown away by the end result, though if you’re an artist or designer, this could be a real boon to your productivity. The build is sturdy, and the screen feels solid beneath your stylus (stylus only that is — no touchscreen here), though the pressure sensitivity seemed to give out at really soft touches… of which there were many. Check the gallery and see for yourself.

Not much to say about this one. It’s a bit larger than we expected, but still pretty well sized for a NAS.

We got a chance to fondle the non-Menlow Amtek U560 / Aigo UMPC on the floor of this year’s CES, and we′ve got the pictures to prove it. The XP-running portable had a solid build, though the mechanism for sliding the screen felt a bit janky, and the overall size is possibly more than you want, especially with all the Menlow hotness coming our way this year. Perhaps a gallery of photos might help? Yeah, we thought so.

While many around the globe have their eyes fixated on the events going down in Las Vegas this week, the 9th Auto Expo in New Delhi, India is managing to steal at least a hint of the limelight. Announced today, Tata Motors’ $2,500 “1-Lakh” car will actually see production in India later this year, and it has affectionately been dubbed the NANO. For those not keen on such a title, it can also be recognized as “The People’s Car,” but it seems “The Person’s Car” may have been more appropriate. Nevertheless, this little bundle of automotive joy will feature an all-aluminum, two-cylinder engine that can deliver around 54 US miles per gallon, and while stripped down would be a gross understatement, it does promise to “exceed current regulatory (read: safety) requirements.” Hit the read link for Tata’s official release along with a plethora of photos.

The news is all over Engadget and the UK version of Gamespot: A new Sony AIBO robotic dog called the AIBO PS is on its way and it’s designed to work with Sony’s Portable PlayStation and PlayStation 3. If true, this would truly be a resurrection, since Sony killed its robotics division (including the AIBO and humanoid QRIO) in the fall of 2006. I’m skeptical, however. There’s no information about where this article came from and many of the new features breathlessly reported on blogs and Gamespot existed in previous AIBOs, including wireless control, built-in camera, motion sensors and facial recognition. The big deal is that it can stream video over WiFi to your PSP. That’s cool, I guess. I used to be able to control my AIBO wirelessly via my PC. If this product is real, Sony simply ported existing AIBO Mind software to the PSP platform and, I assume, the Ṕ platform as well. I’d love to believe that, but Sony’s not saying anything and the company ultimately ended up treating AIBO like an unwanted step child. Plus the whole idea that AIBO can somehow rescue the PSP is utter nonsense. That platform will live or die on its own steam.

Although Sprint has coughed up some $1 billion over the past few years in order to nix the interference between 2,200 public safety agencies across the US and its iDEN network, it apparently hasn′t done enough. Reportedly, the FCC has warned Sprint that it “could lose access to the signal spectrum used by its Nextel- and Boost Mobile-branded wireless services” if it doesn′t remedy the problem by June of 2008. Supposedly, Sprint is “working hard” to settle the issue, but it’s not wasting any time asking the US Court of Appeals to get involved. The carrier claims that these shut down threats could force it to halt signups of Nextel-branded customers, and furthermore, around three million public-safety workers would purportedly lose service if the FCC did indeed shut down the Nextel network. ‘Course, industry analysts are suggesting that regulators wouldn′t really go through with shutting it down, but if nothing else, this should light a fire under Sprint to expedite the process.
