Vodafone releasing iPhone in Australia, Italy, India, and seven other countries

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

Filed under:

Vodafone’s just got a tiny, minor, insignificant announcement to make this morning: it’s signed with Apple to sell the iPhone in ten markets, including Australia, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Greece, Italy (so much for Telecom Italia), India, Portugal, New Zealand, South Africa and Turkey. Expect the phone later this year — that’s all we know for now. Score one (or ten?) for Voda.

Datto Backup NAS brings off-site storage to the little guys

Saturday, April 5th, 2008

Filed under:

Though it’s not the first box we’ve seen built to take your local backups elsewhere, the Datto Backup NAS drive could certainly fill a gaping security hole at many small / medium-sized businesses that are currently operating without any kind of off-site storage. Said devices come in 100GB and 500GB versions, play nice with Windows, Mac or Linux setups and pipe your data to secure external servers (using AES+ SSL key-based encryption, too) in order to keep the process load off of your machine(s). Granted, the annual service fee is $99 for 100GB and $249 for 500GB (monthly plans available), but that does include free support, 24 / 7 backup monitoring and the promise of bringing you back up to speed in under 24 hours should disaster strike. Both drives are available now for $399 and $599, respectively. [Warning: PDF read link]

Shredz64 is very real and very shredding

Monday, March 10th, 2008

Filed under:

Remember that time when we told you about Shredz64 and we were all excited and stuff? Well, friend, sometimes dreams do come true, and Toni ended up completing his Shredz64 project in style. In case you need a refresher, Shredz64 is all about bringing a Guitar Hero-style experience to the Commodore 64 — which, in addition to holding much sentimental value, is quite the musical device in its own right. He has a custom-built “PSX64″ interface for plugging his PS2 Guitar Hero guitar into the ᩬ, which he’s having produced for sale alongside a 5 1/4-inch floppy disk of Shredz64, but the real magic is the software itself. The ᩬ-synthesized songs sound great, and interface is like Guitar Hero or Rock Band without all the annoying fluff. Check out the videos after the break for everything in action.

Dell’s XPS M1330 now with built-in Wireless USB

Monday, February 11th, 2008

Filed under:

We not sure when Dell’s XPS M1330 learned the new Wireless USB trick, nevertheless, it’s sporting that option as of this morning. The $150 add-on integrates a Wireless USB module into Dell’s slick 13.3-inch laptop while netting you a short-range Belkin 4-port USB hub for all your peripherals. See, it’s not just phone news today.

Stefan Eriksson released from jail, awaiting expulsion

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

Just as expected, the former Gizmondo Europe director is free at last — well, almost. Barely a year after Stefan Eriksson was sentenced to “three years” in the slammer, he’s now been let loose from behind bars and is currently “awaiting expulsion.” Purportedly, everything was nearly in place to ship him back to Europe prior to Christmas, but apparently, the Swedish consulate has taken its sweet time in preparing a new passport. What’s still unclear, however, is whether the Ferrari Swede will be flown back to Sweden or Germany, but if all goes to plan, we’ll be liveblogging the whole ordeal as soon as that news breaks (we jest, we jest).

NewerTech intros USB 2.0 Universal Drive Adapter

Monday, January 14th, 2008

Filed under:

Sure, we’ve seen similar adapters in the past, but NewerTech’s latest is quite a few rungs higher on the attractive scale than its most formidable rivals. The inelegantly named USB 2.0 Universal Drive Adapter allows users to easily connect any 2.5-, 3.5- or 5.25-inch HDD / optical drive to a computer via USB, enabling folks to transfer critical data or backup an internal drive altogether without having to hunt down some snazzy external chassis. Notably, the adapter plays nice with IDE, ATA and SATA (among others), has no qualms dealing with OS X / Linux and will set you back just $29.95.

iRobot adds swank mapping kit to PackBot

Wednesday, December 12th, 2007

Filed under:

iRobot has unleashed yet another semi-autonomous robot ready to take on whatever the battlefield throws at it, but this one’s got a much better feel of where it’s headed. The PackBot with Mapping Kit ups the ante by “creating a real-time two-dimensional structural map for the soldier while on the move in theater,” essentially enabling the operator (and his / her squad) to see what’s just ahead without having to slip into potentially dangerous scenarios to find out. Apparently, the kit utilizes an array of sensors and artificial intelligence to relay the structural map while “simultaneously detecting and avoiding obstacles in its path.” Heck, let’s just strap a railgun on this thing and let the soldier kick back at the base.

Microsoft begins new round of Xbox LIVE bans

Wednesday, November 21st, 2007

Filed under:

Heads up, Xbox 360 tinkerers — it appears that Microsoft is bringing out the ban hammer once again. According to a thread on an Xbox-Scene forum, users are having their LIVE wrists slapped left, right, and center due to “bad discs” (i.e., non 1:1 copies of games). Initially, the problem seemed to be modified DVD firmware, but it now appears the cause is due to game data that isn’t properly copied, or has been “touched” in some manner. Keep in mind, these are console bans, as opposed to LIVE account bans, which is a minor amount of good news. The forums are abuzz with profane indictments of Microsoft and calls for heads on platters (okay, it’s not that bad) — but mostly everyone is just waiting to see where the next hit will come from. You’ve been warned, folks.
