Monday, November 24th, 2008

toktumi-logo.gif Toktumi recently announced a partnership with Dell to distribute its small business VoIP service through a co-branded site on Dell.com (www.dell.com/voip), which also features Fonality, Nortel, and Bandwidth.com. So what’s so special about Toktumi, (a word play on ‘talk to me’) and it’s USB-based plug-in device? Well, Toktumi is very toktumi-usb-adapter.jpg similar to the popular Magicjack, which also uses a USB connector for connecting an analog phone. However, Magicjack is only $19.99/year (first year is $39.95) for unlimited U.S. calling while Toktumi is $179.40/year ($14.95/month) for unlimited dialing inside the U.S. and Canada. So what does this extra cost get you?

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 unboxed, played with on video

Monday, October 13th, 2008

Filed under:

Oh yeah, you′ve seen Sony Ericsson’s succulent XPERIA X1 unboxed in still image form, but there’s just nothing like a little unpacking on video to really whet your appetite, right? Oh, and there’s also some comparison action thrown in with the HTC Touch Pro, and of course, we get to see the OS in action. Hop on past the break to have a look, but we’re warning you, those who covet easily will want to restrain themselves.

[Thanks, Oscar]

ezJam Combo Guitar for Wii plays neutral in the battle of the (virtual) bands

ezJam Combo Guitar for Wii plays neutral in the battle of the band games

Living room arenas around the world will soon become even more cluttered with toy instruments thanks to Rock Band 2 and Guitar Hero: World Tour. Axes for the two respective franchises haven’t gotten along on the Wii, and while we′re still not sure whether the next generation will cooperate ezGear is hoping to bring some peace (and eliminate some clutter) for current Nintendo rockers with its ezJam Combo Guitar. Inside its baby-blue Strat-esque styling there’s port to plug in your Wiimote when playing Guitar Hero III as well as an integrated wireless transmitter for Rock Band. At $70 it’s a little more expensive than other third-parties like the Nyko Frontman, but playing lead in two bands instead of one is totally worth it.

Peak’s Starpex wooden guitar controller gets the hands-on treatment

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

Filed under:

While there’s likely nothing that will convince most folks of the merits of a full-size, $180 wooden guitar controller, those still on the fence about this particular piece of excess may be interested to know that the good people of PS3 Fanboy recently got their hands on one, and they’ve now offered up some initial impressions. As you might expect, they found it to definitely be a hefty device, but far from an unwieldy one, with the buttons as familiar as even and the strum bar in particular a significant improvement over other Guitar Hero and Rock Band guitars. Peak also doesn’t look to have cut any corners when it comes to the little details, with even the strap made of a thick fabric that makes it more comfortable to wear.

Guitar Praise Will Make You Want to Say “Jesus Christ!”

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

large_guitar_praisev1-thumb-428x169.gif

Christian Rock attempts to turn the so-called “music of the devil” into a tool for venerating the one and only God. Now we’ve got Guitar Praise, which is apparently an attempt to turn that so-called “sinful” game into a tool for venerating the one and only God.

Honestly, all that we can think of is, “why didn’t they think of this sooner?” It’s about time they let you:

Grab the guitar and play along with top Christian bands! Shred those riffs or blast the bass…you add a unique sound to the solid Christian rock. But watch out: if you can’t keep up, the artists will take a break and stop the music. Crank it up and try again—you’ll soon be rockin’ with the best while praising the Lord! Order the second guitar and jam with a friend!

So, future users, it’s performance-level time, unless you want the artists to take a break. The Guitar Praise package works with the Mac or PC, will be available in “mid-September 2008″, and will cost $100. An extra guitar will set you back $70.

Another Guitar Hero World Tour peripheral in the works?

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

The folks at G4 have a juicy tidbit on the upcoming Guitar Hero World Tour cacophony of simulated instruments: there might be another one in the works. G4 cites Neversoft’s Brian Bright, who let slip that a new peripheral is coming, and will be designed specifically for the music-creating Studio mode (pictured above). The logical choice is a keyboard, since it’s the preferred method for entering melodies and other mundane tasks by boring people, but we’re secretly gunning for Guitar Hero Bassoon — check out the video after the break to see why.

Guitar Hero DS hack lets you shred on a full-size guitar

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

Filed under:

Like many others, Eric Ruckman found that the DS controller add-on for Guitar Hero: On Tour left a bit to be desired but, unlike most folks, he didn’t just go back to playing on his console of choice — he actually went all out and pieced together a full-size rig out of a PS2 Guitar Hero controller. As you can see above, that includes a special housing for the DS itself (it’s still used for strumming), and even a built-in FM transmitter with its own screen, which lets him pump the audio through his home sound system. Still not impressed? Head on past the break to see it in action.

Microsoft says Rock Band 2, Guitar Hero: World Tour, and Rock Revolution instruments to be cross-compatible on 360 as well

Tuesday, August 19th, 2008

Filed under:

It’s sad that the petty bickering between Activision, Harmonix, and Konami required console makers to step up and ensure that gamers didn’t end up with piles of redundant plastic instrument controllers, but things are starting to get better — just as Sony did yesterday, Microsoft announced that it’s requiring Rock Band 2, Guitar Hero: World Tour and Rock Revolution to be cross-compatible on the Xbox 360. The post on Redmond’s Gamerscore blog isn’t chock-full of details, but we′ll commend Microsoft and Sony for getting involved to make sure that all the lawsuits and infighting don’t adversely affect their customers — now if they could only find a way to make those drumkits actually fit into a living room, we’d be all set.

Sony nails down music peripheral compatbility with upcoming titles

Tuesday, August 19th, 2008

With all the incompatibility out there among Guitar Hero / Rock Band instruments, it’s a real treat to see something like this. The Director of Publisher Relations at SCEA has posted an update that promises compatibility between instruments and software for upcoming titles; for instance, Guitar Hero: World Tour’s guitars and drums will work with Rock Band 2 and Konami’s Rock Revolution software, and Rock Band 2’s guitar and drum set will work with Guitar Hero: World Tour and with Rock Revolution. Furthermore, the team is still “working hard to ensure compatibility between the Guitar Hero and Rock Band titles currently on the market,” though we are told that an announcement on that could surface “shortly.” Rock ‘n roll harmony, baby.

DeepNote Guitar Hero bot reveals its secrets on video

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

Filed under:

Don’t even try to deny it — you’ve been holding one mean grudge against that ridiculously accurate DeepNote bot ever since you saw it dominate Guitar Hero in mid-July. Really though, all that pent up aggression is completely unnecessary, and if you’ve been fruitlessly aiming to concoct one of your own, we′ve found the perfect place to start. The video posted up after the jump gives a fantastic overview of how the device actually works, and while it’s far (very far) from simple, it’s nothing the seasoned DIYer couldn’t handle on an extended weekend. Give it a look if you’re head over heels for PCBs and flashing LEDs (oh, and shameless rock ‘n roll).

[Thanks, Jeremy]

Logitech to produce “premium” Guitar Hero: World Tour instruments

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

If you didn’t think every single third-party peripheral provider would try to snag a piece of the band game pie, we guess you thought wrong, huh? With outfits like Mad Catz and Ion already jumping in, it was only a matter of time before Logitech threw on its tightest jeans, blacked out its blond hair and threw up some horns. Details are admittedly scarce, but the company has promised to provide “premium instruments″ for Guitar Hero: World Tour on PS2, PS3, Xbox 360 and the Wii. Rockers can expect the new gear to start shipping “later this year,” though prices, designs and pretty much anything else of importance remains a mystery.

See All the IP Devices at Home?

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

Can you believe that shipments of Internet-Protocol (IP)-enabled consumer electronics reached 64 million units in 2007 — a growth of more than 70%?

trojanhorse.jpegHowever, the market continues to be dominated by Internet-enabled video game consoles.

While many of these game console IP interfaces remain unconnected, the enormous developing installed base represents a “Trojan horse” with enormous potential for online gaming, music and video downloads as well as for a variety of Internet-based value-added services.

Already, in late 2007 Activision announced that more than 2 million songs associated with Guitar Hero were accessed through Xbox Live over the previous five months.

All this comes from MultiMedia Intelligence. And there’s much more to delve into to see where this is all going.

iTunes movie rental fire gets a poke: Warner Bros, Fox, Disney, Paramount and Lions Gate all on board?

Wednesday, January 9th, 2008

Rumors have been swirling that Apple will be offering movie rentals over iTunes for weeks now. Now it would appear that Warner Bros have joined Disney, Twentieth Century Fox, Lions Gate and Paramount in the initial launch. This, according to sources speaking anonymously to Bloomberg. The announcement is expected to be made on January 15th according to the report, presumably during Jobs’ MacWorld keynote. Both new releases and older titles will rent for $3.99 for 24 hours. Bloomberg’s sources also indicate that Fox may join as a supplier of movie downloads. While the details may change, an iTunes rental service announcement on Tuesday seems a near certainty given the recent multi-source, confluence of data.
