Hey, it’s not like you really expected Nokia to ride the coattails of its N95 / N96 forever without adding in a dash of innovation, right? At a recent Nokia event held in New Delhi, Devinder Kishore (the director of marketing for Nokia India) was quoted as saying that “We will have lots of touchscreen phones coming up, including an N-series device very soon.” Granted, it’s not at all shocking to hear that the engineers in Espoo are already conjuring up touch-friendly N-series handsets, but at least you know there’s a fingertip-lovin’ Nokia coming for you if the XpressMusic 5800 just ain’t rubbing you the right way.

We’re not quite sure what Britney is trying to say here. It would help if she could be more specific about what she thinks of this guy. If only there was a word she could use to describe him, over and over and over. Regardless, she absolutely doesn’t want any pictures snapped of her on Nokia 5800 XpressMusic. We tell ya, these unboxers are really stepping up their game of late. Easily topping that trunk lid episode we saw back in July, this Nokia N85 unboxing sees one N85 film another N85’s initial escape from cardboard purgatory… from the roof of a building in New York City. There’s no real surprises here — just an N85 twirled around on a video that’s almost entirely out of focus — and the absence of monologue is downright creepy. That said, we still highly recommend clicking through the break to see this puppy on video. Just bring your own tunes, you’ll need ‘em.

Given that most of the world won’t see Nokia’s 5800 XpressMusic until 2009, you may be better off just forcing yourself to overlook this here review until you can snag one without importing. If you’re just too impatient for all that, however, you should know that an early critique of the affectionately dubbed Tube deemed it mighty impressive. Call quality was solid, the OS was stable in most areas, and the display was a joy to look at and interact with. In fact, reviewers had a difficult time finding anything exceptionally negative to say, noting that this is the handset for anyone after a “well-rounded, do-it-all solution.” It was also made clear that this phone and the iPhone were really two different animals not worth comparing, but that didn’t stop critics from confessing that the 5800 packs an “unparalleled price / quality ratio that changes the rules for all phone makers out there, including Nokia itself.”

The Foundations said it best in their 1968 classic, but seriously, why let us down like this? Nokia didn’t mind busting out a litany of press shots and all the specifications one could need to get amped up about the 5800 XpressMusic, but it obviously has something holding it back from launching in “mature markets” before 2009. In an announcement that’s just as disappointing to the suits in Espoo as it is to those in North America and Down Under (just to name a couple), we’ve now learned that the touchscreen-dominated handset will only be available in seven countries in Asia, the Middle East and Europe before 2009 dawns. Even worse? Not knowing how deep into next year we’ll have to wait for this thing here in the US of A. Catch our feelings spelled out in video form after the break.

Turning up the volume on what could be a music phone war, Nokia has unveiled the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, a mobile device for music that brings innovative new features to the mass market.

Delivering on Nokia’s vision to provide the best total music experience possible, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic will be among the first devices to support Comes With Music, Nokia’s service that offers one year of unlimited access to the entire Nokia Music Store catalog.

When it comes to music phones, people all over the world want a device that is a great music experience — with more memory, loud and powerful speakers, easy synchronization — and must still work well as a mobile phone with direct access to important contacts and content. That’s what the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is supposed to do.

Taking advantage of touch screen technology, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic introduces the “Media Bar,” a handy drop-down menu that provides direct access to music and entertainment, including favorite tracks, videos and photos. The Media Bar also offers a direct link to the web and to online sharing. Because the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic supports Flash content, individuals can surf the entire web, not just pieces of it.

In addition, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic offers a graphic equalizer, 8GB memory for up to 6,000 tracks and support for all main digital music formats and a 3.5mm jack. Built-in surround sound stereo speakers offer the a very powerful sound.

The innovative “Contacts Bar” lets us highlight four favorite contacts on the home screen and, through a single touch, track a digital history of recent text messages, emails, phone logs, photos and blog updates.

Nokia has produced a number of stereo headsets in the past, and while they were… fine, they didn’t exactly wow us with any sort of innovation, particularly when it came to aesthetics. Perhaps that’s why it’s asking for a little help with the Music Almighty Headset Competition. Anyone is welcome to take one of the company’s vanilla products, like the BH-604 or BH-903, and tart it up using either a simple Flash customizer or downloadable Maya, PDF, and PostScript templates. You’ll want the templates to really go crazy, like submitter Mase90 did for the hideous, supposedly Sex Pistols-inspired skull-and-chains-encrusted model above. Voting is open to anyone through the end of the year, with the top 10 being whittled down to 5 by a panel of experts. Winners will get to see their designs turned into reality — though not actually put up for sale.

Every so often, Nokia will pop out a brick-like beast of a clamshell smartphone with a full QWERTY keyboard — a black sheep in Espoo’s lineup in every sense of the word. These so-called Communicators even had their own custom Symbian-based operating system, Series 80, until the E90 came around and brought ‘em in line with the rest of the S60 crowd. Of course, S60 just took a big leap to the world of touch today, and that means the E90’s starting to fall a bit behind — so what’s next? Nokia dropped a little teaser during its webcast today in the form of a stylized touch-based concept bearing strong family ties to the E90 and its ancestors, suggesting S60 5th Edition won’t spell doom for the form factor. If it materializes, history suggests it won’t be a mainstream device — but if the real thing can look as good as this render, who knows?

The 5800 XpressMusic is stealing the lion’s share of the spotlight today, but the first S60 5th Edition handset out there actually isn’t the first to get hooked up with Nokia’s all-you-can-eat Comes With Music service. That honor will instead go to the lowly 5310 XpressMusic candybar, which will get access to about 2 million track downloads when it hits Carphone Warehouse in the UK in prepaid form for £130 (about $228) on October 16, a day earlier than rumored. Other models will have to wait, though Comes With Music versions of the N95 8GB and 5800 are both planned.

She’s arrived at last, the 5800 XpressMusic, Nokia’s tardy entry into the (modern) touchscreen phone space, and we’ve gotten some quality face time with the device. Appropriately nicknamed the Tube, the device has a number of Nokia peculiarities that could appeal to certain sensibilities, but probably won’t be taking a big bite out of existing touchphone market share — at least in the S60-phobic United States. While it may not be Nokia’s first touchscreen phone (anyone out there remember the 7710?), the 5800 XpressMusic is certainly the first to come out of Finland with a mainstream appeal. What we’ve alternately known as the “Tube” throughout much of its development cycle is the first production device to run S60 5th Edition — the fourth major overhaul of Nokia’s ubiquitous smartphone platform since 2002 and the first to support fingers, styli, and high-res displays. Speaking of high-res displays, the 5800 comes equipped with an impressive 3.2-inch 640 x 360 resistive touchscreen to go along with its 3.2-megapixel autofocus cam, Carl Zeiss optics, dual LED flash, GPS, WiFi, 3.5mm jack, and a microSD slot with support for 16GB cards. It’ll be available in three versions — European HSDPA, North American HSDPA, and GSM only — and ships this quarter in black, red, and blue for €279 (about $392) unlocked with an 8GB card thrown in for good measure. Music fans with voracious appetites for new tunes might want to hold out, though, for the Comes With Music-equipped version that follows on “early next year” at a to-be-announced price.

In a rare twist of good luck, we’re able to bring you a very special Screen Grabs featuring both Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz and the Nokia 7610. Apparently, the band’s new video for the song I Don’t Care — which was heavily hyped by both label and artist for its multifarious cameos (Pharrell, Mark Hoppus, Spencer Pratt), and sharp lambaste of modern rock bands as “dudes wearing eyeliner and hawking energy drinks” (AKA Fall Out Boy) — turned into something very different. According to Wentz on a now-removed blog post, the painstaking edit he worked on with director Alan Ferguson was jettisoned for an oddly product placement-filled extravaganza. In his words: “The version of the video that we worked on night after night is not the version that aired, yet somehow a cut full of glorious camera-phone shots did.” Luckily for us, a major blow to the band’s creative endeavors can be salvaged as another look at a piece of technology we know and certainly love. We thought he probably would’ve at least stuck around long enough to see the Tube get announced later this week, but Nokia CTO Bob Iannucci has announced that he’s stepping down from the world’s number one cellphone maker effective immediately for undisclosed “personal reasons.” Though it might seem that the move leaves a gaping hole in Espoo’s senior leadership, the company actually says that Bob will continue on in an advisory role while it decides whether it even needs a CTO going forward. Bob also served as head of the Nokia Research Centre — also known as the place where you get to play with Haptikos — where Henry Tirri, current head of the center’s Systems Research group, will be taking over.

When a major player like Google comes up with a new mobile operating system that’s better than the competition and is totally free, you would certainly expect handset manufacturers to be interested. But there’s interested, and then there’s interested. After lingering for nearly a year in the former category Motorola is now firmly moving to the latter, hiring and headhunting in an effort to build up a 350-person group entirely focused on development of Android phones. The company was one of the original members of the Open Handset Alliance, but seems to have waited for the release buzz from HTC’s G1 before diving in head-first. There’s talk that Nokia (and its “real phones“) may be feeling the vibrations too, allegedly forming an internal team to do the same — on the down low.
