Life Got You Down? Buy a Video Game Console

Thursday, November 13th, 2008

Despite a worsening economy, all three current-generation video game consoles had better U.S. sales in October than they did a year ago, according to the latest figures from The NPD Group.

And both Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Nintendo’s Wii sold more units in October, a four-week reporting period, than in September, a five-week period. Wowwee!

Also the worst of the economic bad news had yet to hit in September.

Sony, however, saw month-over-month PlayStation 3 sales decline, while sales of its previous generation (and less expensive) PlayStation 2 remained strong. Also, the PS3 saw the strongest year-over-year sales increase in October.

Nintendo was again the market leader, even though Microsoft cut prices on its Xbox 360 line in September, making its low-end model the least-expensive console on the market.

More at The Seattle Times.

(Can you blame them for that seemingly pro-MS plug …)

Kodak stuns with world’s first 7.6-inch OLED picture frame

Wednesday, September 17th, 2008

Filed under:

We figured it was coming, now sure enough, Kodak just let loose a new picture frame based on CMEL’s new mass-produced, 7.6-inch OLED panels. Ultra-thin as you’d expect and wireless as you’d hope, the new 800 x 480 pixel Wireless Frame should be ready for the holidays sporting 2GB of internal storage, integrated audio, a 30,000:1 contrast, 180-degree viewing angle, and photo service compatibility with Flickr and others. Unfortunately, it’s got a price you’d expect from this nascent display tech: $999. Sparky, had better be worth it.

Sony demos battery-powered, fully-wireless OLED TV

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

What’s better than a (cheap) XEL-1? How’s about a wireless, battery-powered XEL-1? Sony has recently shown off a completely cordless OLED TV with the same ultrathin chassis as used in the aforementioned 11-incher. Bulking things up a bit is the integrated HDTV tuner, and of course, it’s wall-mountable for midgets who live in a Little Tikes playhouse. Unfortunately, there’s no real mention of specs (aside from the whole “3-millimeter thin” part), and even worse, there’s no telling how long we’ll have to wait before we see it hit shelves (let alone grow to a size that’s actually useful). Anywho, tap the read link for a plethora of images.

More info on Quake 3 for the iPod touch

Wednesday, April 9th, 2008

Filed under:

That video we saw the other day of two iPod touches running a networked Quake 3 deathmatch sent ripples through the iPod / iPhone community. Those of you doubting the authenticity of the clip can probably put some fears to bed, as GameCyte has gotten a hold of the programmers, and they make it fairly clear it wasn′t some elaborate hoax. According to developers Cameron and Marcia Tofer of Hermitworks, they managed to get the game up and running on the touches in, “Between eight and twelve hours,” using jail-broken units, no official SDK, and modified code that added basic accelerometer support. The game in the video is being hosted on one of the devices and played over a local network — and the Tofers claim that running a full 64-player match wouldn′t be out of the question. Unfortunately, there aren′t any plans to make this demo public, as the team is working on original content for the platform. So… email petition anyone?

Whose Kid Are You Anyways?

There’s no way, *no* way that you came from *my* loins. Soon as I get home, first thing I’m gonna do is punch yo mamma in da mouth! –Buford T. Justice

Oh, the times my father repeated that movieline to me! Over and over. Sadly he was dreaming and this lazy, useless drop-out is his son. However, if there is any question about you and your questionable progeny — you may want to try the IdentiGene 3-5 Day Home Paternity Kit.

How To Make Cheap Noise Cancelling Headphones

Thursday, February 7th, 2008

For anyone that travels a lot on planes, or suffers every day on loud commuter trains or the underground, noise cancelling headphones are the only way to shut out the external racket.

Anything else and you end up with this loud, dull roar of external noise overlaying everything you listen too. And, yes, because you have to crank the volume up a lot, you will go deaf faster.

That said, decent noise-cancelling headphones are not cheap and even the budget ones are not exactly cheap either. Here’s a cheap DIY approach to making your own although, to be frank, I’ve never seen earmuffs this cool, or cheap, in my local B&Q.-Martin Lynch

Numark’s TTi turntable transfers vinyl to iPod sans a PC

Saturday, January 19th, 2008

Sure, there’s a smorgasbord of products out there designed to transfer your precious vinyl recordings to a slightly more modern format, but few pack the cool factor that comes bundled in gratis with Numark’s TTi. This newfangled turntable not only brings back not-so-fond memories of your second high school prom, but it also boasts an integrated iPod dock, USB interface, a metal platter and pitch control to boot. Besides ripping records directly to your ‘Pod, the unit also features a line-level output and comes with versions of EZ Vinyl Converter software for the PC or Mac should you prefer vinyl-to-computer ripping. We know, it’s tough to leave the 70s, but the TTi should make the transition somewhat less painstaking when it lands in ̬ for $449. One more angle’s waiting after the break.

DLO introduces HomeDock HD: yet another upscaling iPod dock

Thursday, January 17th, 2008

Just in case the HomeDock hasn’t been revamped and slightly renamed enough already, DLO is busting out yet another in the line and throwing the all-too-trendy “HD” moniker in there for good measure. As with most every other alternative already on the market, the HomeDock HD offers up 720p / 1080i upscaling and gives your iPod an easy way to output content via HDMI. You’ll also find an optical digital audio output, a USB port, an auxiliary input and S-Video / composite outputs. DLO claims that the enhanced on-TV interface will just melt your heart (more or less, anyway), and the bundled remote will keep you firmly planted on the sofa when flipping through clips. Mum’s the word on pricing at the moment, but feel free to take a second and check out this thing’s backside after the break.

XtremeMac’s Luna X2 is ready to rule

Thursday, January 17th, 2008

When it comes to iPod docking alarm clocks, few can face-off with XtremeMac’s Luna. Now there’s the Luna X2. Normally we’d shred the puffery found in phrases like “world class iPod audio system,” “crystal clear display,” and a design meant to “complement any room’s decor.” However, their first-generation Luna was so well received that we tend to believe their boasting. For the moment, anyway. Your $120 (pre-order) gets you a pair of fully customizable, independent alarms, aux-in, AM/FM radio, and same audio performance found in the original Luna. Only now in a newly designed chassis which reflects the new iPod reality: the white iPod is dead.

BD+ has not been compromised, yet

Wednesday, January 9th, 2008

BD+

Despite SlySoft announcing that BD+ was compromised, and promising an update to its AnyDVD HD software, — which enables you to rip a Blu-ray discs — here we are a few months later and the latest is that SlySoft recommends that you buy HD DVD. But with Warner recently going blu, a question at the Blu-ray press conference was “did BD+ have anything to do with their decision?” And while Warner’s answer was “no”, afterwards it was brought to our attention by a Fox employee that BD+ has not been compromised. But, if that’s true, then where do these HD Fox titles distributed via illegal means come from? The situation is actually hilariously ironic, as in love with BD+ that Fox seems to be, high quality transfers of their movies still make it onto the internet because of the European releases of HD DVD — not distributed by Fox and thus not Blu-ray exclusive — are only protected with AACS. So if you think about it, without BD+, users would have to buy Fox titles to get them on their computer for other uses, but as it stands, it makes more sense for them skip laying down any cash and download the movies instead, nice job guys.
