Toshiba gets serious with $4k Qosmio X305-Q708 gaming laptop

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

Filed under:

Look out, Alienware / Voodoo — a formidable opponent just rolled in, and it appears that some prankster stuck a Toshiba logo on whatever machine is hiding underneath. All jesting aside, Tosh is revamping its — shall we say, vividQosmio X305 by introducing the Qosmio X305-Q708, which houses a potent Core 2 Extreme QX9300 CPU, 4GB of DD̷ RAM, a 128GB SSD, 320GB 7,200 RPM SATA drive, dual-layer DVD writer, twin NVIDIA 512MB GeForce 9800M GTS graphics cards, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR and Windows Vista Ultimate. You′ll also find a full-sized keyboard with a ten-key number pad, four Harman Kardon speakers, HDMI / DisplayPort connectors, 1.3-megapixel webcam, Wireless USB / USB Sleep-and-Charge technologies and a 17-inch TruBrite LCD (though resolution remains a mystery). It should be available any moment for around $4,199.99, but we′d factor in a few extra hundies to have Colorware blot out the putrid “fiery Fusion” finish (seen better after the break).

Formula 1 superstar finishes first in race to nab BlackBerry Storm

Thursday, October 9th, 2008

There are, shall we say, certain “advantages” to driving a race car sponsored by global wireless behemoth Vodafone. Fame, fortune, and a free account (seriously, all the minutes and kilobytes you can eat!) definitely rank high on that list, but it all pales in comparison to this. It seems that Formula 1 wizard Lewis Hamilton has been gifted with a Voda-branded Storm, a great publicity play for the carrier — particularly as he’s sitting in front of a camera describing how “wicked” it is. Clearly, the video is little more than a PR stunt, but the phone genuinely seems to be his, and at least we can get a clear look at how fast, fluid, and pretty the interface appears to be. So, anyone know where he leaves that thing when he’s out racing? Check the full action after the break.

Digium AEX410 Launches

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

aex410.pngDigium announced the immediate availability of the AEX410, a four-port modular analog PCI-Express x1 telephony interface card for use with Asterisk. The AEX410 is a PCI-Express board that compliments Digium′s existing PCI-based TD𒹢 product.

The AEX410 offers analog (FXS) stations and analog trunk (FXO) modules for connecting to the PSTN or analog devices. An optional DSP-based 128ms line echo cancellation for the AEX410 is provided by Digium’s VPMADT032 G.168 module. The optional hardware echo cancellation module provides 1024 taps (128 milliseconds) of echo cancellation for superior voice quality on both trunk and station interfaces.

According to the Digium blog, the naming convention is as follows:
AEX4XYZ

Where X indicates the number of FXS (station) modules (ports)
Where Y indicates the number of FXO (trunk) modules (ports)
Where Z indicates either B for bundles not containing DSP-based echo cancellation or E for bundles that do contain DSP-based echo cancellation.

So for example, here are some sample models, though not limited to just these:
AEX422E <- 2 FXS, 2 FXO, has DSP echo cancellation
AEX440E <- 4 FXS, 0 FXO, has DSP echo cancellation
AEX404E <- 0 FXS, 4 FXO, has DSP echo cancellation

The AEX410 board product utilizes Digium’s wctdm24xxp driver file that is part of the Zaptel (soon-to-be DAHDI) driver package. For more info, check out the blog post.

VUDU readying Blu-ray quality rentals

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

While rumors have been flowing hot and heavy about VUDU’s possible demise, it seems the company has other plans in mind. We’ve received word that select beta team members are now being asked to try out new downloads that are intended to rival Blu-ray quality. Dubbed HDX movies, these ultra-high-def flicks are currently being watched by folks willing to wait a number of hours (two to three) for a film to start, but there’s no guarantee that we’ll ever see this hit the masses. Sure, we totally dig the idea of BD-quality content on-demand, but we could almost scoot down to Blockbuster, rent a bona fide Blu-ray Disc, watch, and return it before a so-called HDX title even begins.

ASUS continues to mercilessly flog Eee brand with Eee PC 1000HD

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

Filed under:

ASUS must think that best way to make the Eee PC stand out in the overflowing netbook market is to crank out minor, uninteresting variants of the same models, because otherwise we’re at a total loss to explain today’s appearance of the Eee PC 1000HD. Yeah, that’s the 1000HD, not the 1000H, which we’ve already seen. Ridiculous. Even more ridiculous is that it’s basically the same machine as the Pentium M-based Eee 904, only with the 1000’s 10-inch screen. Right. So now not only are there an endless variety of Eee models, the model numbers themselves don’t indicate anything logical: the Eee 901 is faster than the 904, which uses the basic case of the 1000 but shares a processor with the 900 and 1000HD — but not the 1000 or 1000H, which are Atom-based like the 901. Hmm, Easy to learn, Easy to work, Easy to play — not easy to buy might be your big problem here, ASUS.

Parrot offers up $450 Andrée Putman-designed digiframe

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

Remember that Andrée Putman-designed digital photo frame that was showcased in the UK earlier this year? Even if not, Parrot would like to remind you of this apparently exquisite device, which features commonplace luxuries like a 7-inch 720 x 480 resolution display, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, an SD / MMC card slot, an undisclosed amount of internal memory and USB connectivity. Oh, and did we mention the $449.99 price? Yeah, there’s that, too. Heard enough, haven’t you? (Psst… it ships on July 28th in the US.)

AOC’s 22-inch 2230Fm HD3 display includes integrated media player

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

AOC’s 2230Fh LCD was fine and dandy, but if you’re looking for something similar to pull triple duty as a media player and digital photo frame (its words, not ours), you’ll need to refocus on the 2230Fm. Said display is apparently the first from the firm to boast HD3 technology, which alludes to its abilities to function as more than just an HDTV. The unit includes a proprietary menu and remote to play back clips loaded onto memory cards (there’s a 4-in-1 reader), not to mention a 1,680 x 1,050 native resolution, 20,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, USB 2.0 socket, DVI / HDMI inputs, integrated speakers, 2-millisecond response time and a piano black finish. All that for $399.99. Full release posted after the jump.

Kodak bumps out a pair of new Flickr-friendly Wireless Digital Frames

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

Kodak’s new W820 (8-inch) and W1020 (10-inch) are the latest in the company’s charming line of Quick Touch Border digital photo frames. Quite similar to their M820 and M1020 (pictured) counterparts in most respects, the new frames add WiFi, which brings with it services like Flickr, FrameChannel and Kodak Gallery. Unfortunately, the only way to add generic RSS feeds is FrameChannel, and all FrameChannel subscriptions include a monstrous banner ad across the bottom of each frame — at least Kodak’s partnership with Flickr is separate, so those subs are clean. Each frame includes 512MB of storage in addition to memory card slots, and they should be out next month for $250 and $280, respectively.

Transcend doles out 7-inch T.photo 720 digiframe

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

Last September, Transcend had the bright idea of cluttering up the digital photo frame market even further with its own ho hum offering. Apparently the idea went over okay — or the brilliant suit who decided to go for it is to prideful to admit otherwise. Either way, today we′re presented with the 7-inch T.photo 720, a much less traditional frame (in terms of design) with a 800 x 480 resolution display, 2GB of integrated memory, built-in stereo speakers / headphone jack and an obligatory multicard reader. You’ll also find a USB socket, FM tuner, support for video playback and a customizable alarm clock. If you’re down with the rounded corners, you can expect this one later this month (in black or white) for around $165.

NuTouch offers up finger-friendly 7-inch digital photo frame

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

If you’re not snoozin’ by the end of this one, clearly you haven’t been paying attention to just how many humdrum digiframes have been pumped out over the past six months or so. Nevertheless, NuTouch’s 7-inch Touch Frame does manage to stand out somewhat in the legions of mediocre alternatives, as the sleek, glossy black frame gets complemented with an array of touch-sensitive controls, built-in stereo speakers and integrated MP3 player. The panel packs a 800 x 480 resolution, and furthermore, you′ll find 128MB of storage, a multicard reader, internal battery, clock / calendar functions and USB connectivity. Still, we can′t help but balk at the £139 ($273) price tag — then again, we are dealing with the declining-by-the-second greenback here.

ASUS’ UFOTO UF735 digiframe doubles as secondary PC display

Sunday, June 1st, 2008

Finally, a little innovation in the midst of watered-down, me-too digital photo frames. Here we have the UFOTO UF735, which exhibits a 7-inch 800 x 480 resolution display, USB 2.0 connectivity, headphone jack, 128MB of built-in memory, integrated speakers, a multicard reader for handling JPEG / BMP / GIF / MP3 files and your choice of silver, pink or blue frame colors. Beyond those yawn-inducing stats, you’ll find a swank sub-display function, which enables owners to use it as a secondary display (SideShow, anyone?) on their PC. As is customary for ASUS, it’s not doling out pricing / release information just yet, but this one may actually be worth paying attention to when it finally lands.

Digital Photo Urn is just too creepy to be useful

Tuesday, May 20th, 2008

If you’re somehow able to gaze upon the Digital Photo Urn without emotion, you’ll find a fairly useful product. Still, we can’t help but be a little creeped out by the notion. Nevertheless, those with differing views can certainly procure one of their own, which was meant specifically to hold the remains (or at least some of them) of your lost pet and continually show pictures of its life on the built-in 7-inch display. In case you’re still not freaked out, the unit even supports audio, so you can “hear the precious barks, whines and purrs anytime.” At this point, we highly doubt you care about the 256MB of integrated storage space, USB connectivity or Oak / Walnut motifs, but those not shaken can secure one now for around $250.

BT said to be prepping a “BlackBerry-style” hybrid handset

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

Filed under:

Britain’s top fixed-line carrier is apparently aiming to get back in the handset game, as Times Online is reporting that said company will reveal a “BlackBerry-styled″ device that does everything your typical smartphone can along with one extra inclusion. According to the writeup, the forthcoming device will “switch from BT’s wireless Home Hub indoors to Vodafone’s network on the move,” and it’s expected to be sold with a broadband package. Of course, those familiar with BT will recall that this isn’t the outfit’s first foray in the sector, but it’s hoping the new handset will fare a good bit better than the poorly received BT Fusion. So, how’s about a picture of this thing?
