HTC Touch HD
HTC’s Touch HD is arguably the best touch-screen Windows Mobile-based phones you can buy. In fact, even before the HTC Touch HD, I always felt HTC mobile phones were the best Windows Mobile phones you could buy. I own an older HTC-based “Apache” XV6700 Windows Mobile with a cooked ROM upgraded to Windows Mobile 6.1 and I’m still pretty happy using it. I still consider my xv6700 one of the top 5 Windows Mobile phones available. Installed on it I have a standalone Youtube player, TCPMP Media Player, Opera Mini, HTC Streaming Media Player, Java (Jbed), Skyfire browser, and more. It does the job and I especially like the slide-out keyboard. I’m not into the iPhone touch-screen’s keyboard or the new Blackberry Storm for that matter. I find tactile keyboards work best for typing lengthy emails.

htc touch hd portrait Comparisons between the new HTC Touch HD and the Apple iPhone will no doubt be made, since they both offer large touch-screens. In fact, the Touch HD beats the iPhone’s screen with it’s 3.8″ WVGA (480 X 800 pixel) screen vs. 3.5″ (320 x 480) for the iPhone. It beats the iPhone in size and resolution! In addition, unlike the Apple iPhone, Windows Mobile apps can run in the background, which is important for IM &amp VoIP apps like Skype. You have to jailbreak your iPhone if you want to enable background processing. What’s up with Mr. Steve Jobs? He can be anally retentive sometimes when it comes to “controlling” Apple products.

BlackBerry Storm Launch Crashes Verizon Network

Friday, November 21st, 2008

blackberrystorm_device_headon.jpg I was on the phone with TMC’s Verizon representative to discuss changing our mobile phone plans. The Verizon rep told me it was bad timing since their entire intranet ordering system had completely crashed as a result of the Blackberry Storm launch. TMC’s business Verizon rep couldn’t even make changes to our account as a result. Well, it certainly looks like the Storm is having a tremendously successful launch. Should the iPhone be worried?

Heck, hundreds of people lined up at Verizon Wireless stores today across the U.S. to buy the BlackBerry Storm, the first touch-screen phone from Research In Motion.

According to Reuters, more than 200 people had waited at a Verizon store in mid-town Manhattan but were turned away after it ran out of the new phones less than an hour after opening. The angry customers were seen wielding pitchforks and torches until the police came to restore order. No really…

Mojo Mobility Charges Gadgets Wirelessly

Friday, November 14th, 2008

noncontact-charging-system-multiple-devices.jpgMojo Mobility Inc, a Silicon Valley-based venture firm, has developed a technology to simultaneously charge multiple mobile devices simply using a flat surface that doesn’t even to touch the charging circuitry of  mobile phones, iPods, iPhones, and other gadgetry.

While NFP (Near Field Power) is not a new concept, the non-contact charging system leverages an electromagnetic induction method. The system is composed of two coils, one for transmitting and the other for receiving electric power.

Mojo Mobility has developed a prototype sheet-type charger equipped with multiple transmitting coils. On this sheet to the right, up to four devices charged at the same time with the ability to produce 2.5W to 4W of power ..

Scitec’s Swarovski skullphones: Look what the cat dragged in

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

Filed under:

Somehow, we don’t think that this was what Swarovski had in mind when they began whoring their luxury name onto consumer electronics a few years ago. The Scitec SEB-100 canal-type earbuds with fancy, “hand-pasted″ crystals will cost ¥10,000 (about 100 US beans) when they hit Japan later this month. The perfect gift for the glam-rock pansy struggling with middle age on your Malibu, beachside block.

Going Green with My Gadgets

Monday, September 15th, 2008

We all love our gadgets — some more than others – but all of those TVs, computers, mobile phones and DVD players suck up energy and end up clogging landfills.

How can you stay plugged in while minimizing the effect on the environment?

Take a look at MyGreenElectronics.com, a website launched last year by the Consumer Electronics Association.

The site offers lists of low-energy-use electronic products, tips on how to limit energy consumption by the electronics you own and advice for making your electronics last longer so they don’t have to be thrown out so soon.

If you no longer want an electronic device, the site can help with its list of nonprofit groups that accept them, and an easy-to-use search tool (just enter a ZIP Code) for finding electronics recyclers in your area.

A calculator on the site can help you estimate how much energy is consumed by electronics in your home and what it’s costing you.

(Don’t know if really want to know all of the gory details, but this is very important — carbon footprint, you know — so will have to try it out.)

Two new Kindle models on the horizon?

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

Filed under:

Take this one with plenty of salt, but CrunchGear has it that not one, not three, but exactly two new Kindle models are destined to go on sale to the adoring indifferent public within the next 6 to 12 months. Reportedly, the first model is simply a revamped version of the existing Kindle with a smaller form factor, the same sized screen and an “improved interface.” The second new version will purportedly be shaped like a 8.5- x 11-inch sheet of paper and should land early next year. Both Kindles will be available in a variety of hues, though pricing information remains a mystery. Hang tight bookworms, we’ve still got awhile yet before figuring out just how legitimate this is.

Blu-ray Buy 2 DVDs, Get 1 Free Promotion

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

Cool Blue-ray promotion from Amazon I thought I’d share. Buy 2 Blu-ray DVDs get 1 DVD free. Sweet! I keep threatening to buy a Blu-ray player, specifically a Sony PS3, but I just can’t seem to pull the trigger. Could have something to do with the $1500 Jeep transmission repair.

The ASUS Eee PC 1000 shows up for pre-order at Amazon

Sunday, July 13th, 2008

Filed under:

If you′ve been tearing your hair out, pacing wildly around the room, and sweating bullets over the availability of the ASUS Eee PC 1000 (and we know you have), you’ll be pleased to know that the grown-up sized version of the company’s mini-laptop is now available for pre-order on Amazon. The site doesn′t provide specific release dates for the systems (the $699.99, 40GB SSD equipped 1000, and the $649.99, 80GB HDD equipped 1000H), though we’re figuring it can′t be too long till these models hit shipping centers. In the meantime, we recommend going for long jogs.

Princeton to start publishing Kindle-edition textbooks

Saturday, June 28th, 2008

Filed under:

Amazon’s Kindle ebook reader has been doing pretty well as a consumer device, but we’ve always thought it had amazing potential as a textbook reader — especially coupled iTunes-style with Amazon’s online distribution system. Apparently Princeton University (Jeff Bezos’s alma mater) agrees with us, because it’s just announced plans to publish Kindle version of its textbooks this fall, joining Yale, Oxford, and Berkeley in supporting the device. It’s not clear how many books are due to be published on the device or how content like photographs and full-color diagrams will be handled (what’s a bio book without red mitochondria? They’re the “powerhouse” of the cell!), but we’re certain students will gladly make the tradeoff to reduce their backpack loads just a little bit.

Amazon’s MP3 store nearing global launch?

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

Filed under:

While Amazon’s quest to take its DRM-free, MP3 store global is public knowledge, the where and the when of that maneuver are closely guarded secrets. The UK’s Telegraph is reporting that execs from Amazon’s MP3 store were in London last week to “thrash out details of the launch with British record company bosses.” Of course this says nothing about timing. On one side of the impending launch is DRM, that hot button of nastiness favored by the music industry and not offered by Amazon MP3. On the other, iTunes, and the music industry’s desire to usurp Apple’s digital dominance while inversely strengthening the bargaining power of its music execs’ over Cupertino. In other words, we may be looking at an imminent launch of a global Amazon MP3 store… and we may not, though we’re leaning towards the former.

A Million eReaders? Who Would Have Figured?

Monday, June 9th, 2008

41mLdDed4ML._SL160_SL120_.jpg

Does anybody out there love their ereader?

Well, guess so, according to this blog from Oxford University Press (OUP) USA.

When Amazon launched the Kindle there predictions aplenty about how it and its predecessor — Sony’s Reader would sell.

Over time the chatter died down, but it returned and hit full volume after the recent Book Expo America in Los Angeles, when Mr. Amazon, Jeff Bezos, discussed ebook sales volume at the Kindle store. The chatter, as reported in the NY Times, has publishers and others speculating that Amazon has sold 10,000 - 50,000 Kindles.

However, the OUP blog speculates that combined sales of the Kindle and the Reader will reach 1 million units this year.

Anybody want to dispute that fact?

HP’s Blackbird 002 gets exclusive configuration for retail launch

Monday, June 9th, 2008

Filed under:

Just because you haven’t seen one on every street corner doesn’t mean that HP’s Blackbird 002 gaming rig hasn’t been around the block a time or two. Still, those of you who haven’t found the nerve (or spare change) to pull the trigger can look forward to being tempted even more this summer. Starting soon, the Blackbird 002 will be available in an exclusive configuration at Amazon, NewEgg and select Best Buy, Circuit City, J&R and Micro Center locations. Amazon Down Due to Pricing Error or Metal Gear Bundle?

Friday, June 6th, 2008

Several bloggers were abuzz with the news of Amazon’s website being down today.

One site claims &quotSome customers reported that traffic caused the site to slow down considerably&quot. The reason? &quotTHOUSANDS of customers were in shopping heaven today when a pricing error on Amazon&rsquos UK website caused online chaos.&quot It adds, &quotFor two hours, the entertainment giant was advertising massive discounts on several DVD box sets including a 44-disc set of hit US drama West Wing for just £17.97.&quot And says, &quotSales of Family Guy shot up over 200,000%, according to the Movers & Shakers chart on Amazon.&quot Wow!

here’s the full story on the possible cause of Amazon being down:
www.express.co.uk/posts/view/47292/Amazon-prices-spark-shopping-frenzy

PS3fanboy claims the Metal Gear bundle killed the Amazon.com website.
http://www.pҁfanboy.com/2008/06/06/metal-gear-bundle-kills-amazon-com/

Perhaps a combination of the two? Perhaps yet another "perfect storm" which also caused the Skype outage.

Only time will tell as to the true cause. In the meantime, fellow bloggers are reporting that Amazon’s EC2 and S3 services are online and unaffected.

JetBlue expands in-flight connectivity options on BetaBlue aircraft

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

Filed under:

During our time on JetBlue’s BetaBlue aircraft, we came away mildly impressed with what was available. Thankfully, the airline isn’t resting on its laurels, and has today announced expanded services for those lucky enough to secure a seat on the connected Airbus A320. By utilizing LiveTV’s Kiteline platform, patrons can now check their Gmail, AOL Mail, Hotmail and Windows Live Mail from the comfort of their seat, and just in case you get bored with that, a “customized in-flight version of Amazon.com” will also be accessible. Yeah, we’re talking really minor updates here, but at least the whole gamut of what’s available is still totally free. Gratis and airlines just don’t go together these days, so it’s certainly a welcome change.
