If you’ve been putting off that purchase of Popcorn Hour’s evolutionary A-110 HD media streamer or all new B-110 motherboard, here’s a decent compilation of facts and opinions to help you make up your mind once and for all. The cats over at DigitalReviews took the time to not only detail, test out and report back on the newest duo from the company, but it also revisited the original (and heralded) A-100 in order to give a better comparison. Overall, critics did tend to prefer the A-110 over its predecessor, but the minor list of changes made it a hard sell for folks teetering on upgrading. The B-110 was seen as an even tougher sell, with only the hardcore DIY crowd likely to even find it worth investigating. Nevertheless, we won’t spoil the rest for you — head on down to have a look for yourself.
[Thanks, Anton]

While we can only imagine that the lead time for one of Popcorn Hour’s A-110 HD media streamers is at least a week or so judging by the demand of the predecessor, at least one of these things has managed to make its way out. CNET’s UK branch was able to wrap their paws around the latest Networked Media Tank, and while they did note that the design was essentially the same, the changes that were made (HDMI 1.3a in particular) were “seriously worthwhile.” For a brief preview and a few more shots, check out the read link below.

Although it seems like every TV shipping recently comes with USB ports and DivX compatibility packed in, if all you want is the ability to plug in a drive and play, the Iomega ScreenPlay TV Link may be right for you. Equipped with the same HDMI / component / composite outputs plus WAV, WMA, MPEG-1/2/4, MP3, OGG, AC3, AVI, DivX, XviD and JPEG file formats as the ScreenPlay HD, this unit forgoes the 500GB hard drive — a far cry from the old ScreenPlay days when it was just a HDD — in favor of a sleek 3.26 x 3.07 x .78-inch profile weighing less than 4 oz. Plug in your USB flash drive or FAT32 or NTFS formatted HDD and play or upconvert SD content up to 1080i with no problem. Granted it doesn’t have the power of a full-fledged media streamer but as a $99.95 take-anywhere box (available now in the U.S., Europe later this month) it’s probably worth a look.

Who knows if Popcorn Hour really is still working on a couple more HD media streamers, but its latest one is definitely up for pre-order. First whispered about a few months back, the $215 A-110 is a revamped A-100 that adds 2.5- / 3.5-inch SATA HDD and USB Slave functionality, HDMI 1.3a support (for full HD audio pass-through) and an optical S/PDIF to replace the coaxial S/PDIF socket. For those of you looking for even more flexibility, you can take a look at the outfit’s new B-110 Baseline. This “Home Theater Motherboard” arrives with the media enthusiast in mind, boasting support for HDMI 1.3a, optical / coaxial S/PDIF connectors, four USB 2.0 ports and a mini-ITX form factor. Both pieces should ship out within two to four weeks, but considering just how sticky things were when the A-100 launched, we’d tack on a few weeks to that estimation just in case.
[Thanks, Stephen and Jeff]

A team of astute MIT researchers have developed a sophisticated new material that could help control, contain and lessen the environmental impact of future oil spills. The creation is a mat of nanowires that actually looks a lot like paper, but unlike the material your paycheck gets printed on, this stuff can “selectively absorb hydrophobic liquids (oil-like liquids) from water.” We’re talking about a membrane that can “absorb up to 20 times its weight in oil, and can be recycled many times for future use.” Outside of this, it could also be used in water filtration processes and for designing the next great wetsuit. Okay, so we’re making that last one up, but don’t dare say it’s beyond the realm of possibility.

Today, Skype announced its first-ever, flat-rate international calling subscription. Sure, Skype has had unlimited flat-rate calling to the U.S. and Canada for some time, but today marks the first time Skype has given some non-North American countries (minus Mexico) some unlimited lovin’. As of today, Skype now offers unlimited international calling to 34 countries. The subscriptions do not require a long-term contract and customers can pay monthly, quarterly or annually. Unlimited World will cost you just $9.95/month making this a suitable solution for heavy international callers.
As part of the global roll-out of Skype’s new calling subscriptions, customers in the U.S. and Canada can choose from the following three options:
• Unlimited U.S. & Canada: Unlimited calls to landline and cell phones in the U.S. and Canada. ($2.95 per month)
• Unlimited Mexico: Unlimited calls to landline and cell phones in the U.S. and Canada, and to landlines in Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey; up to 80% off normal SkypeOut rates to landlines in the rest of Mexico and up to 40% off normal SkypeOut rates to all Mexico cell phones. ($5.95 per month)
• Unlimited World: Unlimited calls to landline and cell phones in 34 countries and to Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey; up to 80% off normal SkypeOut rates to the rest of Mexico landlines and up to 40% off normal SkypeOut rates to all Mexico cell phones.($9.95 per month)
All subscriptions also include a Skype To Go number, which lets users make international calls at local rates from a cell phone or landline phone.
Similar calling subscriptions which are available for purchase to consumers worldwide also include an online number so anyone can call you from a landline or cell phone (U.S. subscribers get a 50% discount on the purchase of an online number).
Rich Tehrani has more including an interview with Don Albert, VP and GM of Skype North America about a number of new initiatives at the company.

Harris Corp. may have nothing but good things to say about the
HTC-made PDAs it’s planning to supply for use in the 2010 census, but it looks like the handhelds are already starting to cause plenty of headaches for census officials, who are reportedly even considering a return to pencil and paper if things can’t be resolved. As the AP reports, the problems start with the contract for the devices, which originally clocked in at $596 million, has since grown to $647 million, and could eventually balloon to as much as $2 billion. As if that wasn’t enough, the handheld has also apparently proven to be “too complex” for some of the temporary census workers that took part in a test last year, and the device was reportedly “not initially programmed to transmit the large amounts of data necessary.” As a result, census officials are now said to be considering a number of different options to scale back the use of the devices, only one of which apparently actually has the headcounters entering data into ‘em as they go door-to-door.

It’s only been a short while since we saw the first successful attempts at Wii homebrew, but things now look to have busted wide open, with hacks seemingly turning up left and right these days. Most notably, the folks from the GameCube Linux project have recently let loose a proof of concept Linux “mini-distro” that makes use of the now infamous Twilight Princess hack to turn the Wii into a tiny (and so far not very useful) Linux box. If that’s a bit too much you, however, you may be interested in some of the tamer homebrew fare that recently made its debut, including an MP3 player and, you guessed it, an SNES emulator. In related news, Nintendo also just pushed out an official updated to the Wii OS (version 3.2), but contrary to what the timing would suggest, it apparently doesn’t do anything to block you from getting your homebrew fix.

Bring it, we say. Opera Mobile 9.5 is prepped and (almost) ready for beta release. Version 9.5 is noticeably faster thanks to a re-enginered Presto rendering engine and features a new browser interface and downloadable Opera Widgets. A World Factbook widget pulls data from Flickr, Google Maps, and CIA World Factbook simultaneously. Opera was
more than happy to compare their new browser with Microsoft’s Internet Explorer Mobile to demonstrate the obvious — IE mobile is cruel. Opera mobile 9.5 will see its first public unveiling starting February 11th at GSMA with a public beta expected soon. Click on through for the video.
