Not Even Half of Old PCs Get Reused … Sad

Monday, December 1st, 2008

43442.jpeg Worldwide demand for used PCs is greater than supply, yet less than half of PCs entering the secondary market get reused.

Only one in five PCs targeted for reuse find their way from a mature to a developing economy, tech consulting firm Gartner said in a report.

Of those machines that actually make it, only 44% get used. Major hindrances include export tariffs and high transportation costs.

“The secondary PC market offers great opportunity to specialized intermediaries, resellers, or vendors, but it is a highly fragmented and competitive market,” Gartner analyst Meike Escherich said in a statement.

Refurbished PCs typically offer equal or better profit margins than new PCs, ranging from $10 to $50 for a 3-year-old machine.

Motorola KRAVE ZN4 Out—Who Cares?

Friday, October 24th, 2008

Looks like Motorola spent some time and money, paying designers to craft a good-looking email newsletter to announce the availability of the KRAVE Z̐ in the US:

motorola-krave-zn4.jpg

But the real question is, does anyone care? The only interest I have in the KRAVE is its apparent status as the Motorola Ming’s successor.

HTC’s Touch HD, Diamond and Pro get together for photo shoot

Monday, September 22nd, 2008

Filed under:

You’ve seen HTC’s Touch Diamond, Touch Pro and Touch HD handled in separate instances, but CNET Asia took the opportunity to get all three of the handsets together for a little get-together. Atypical for most sibling relationships, these three seemed to get along fairly well, though we did overhear the Touch Diamond calling the Touch Pro “a fatso.” Hit the read link for a few more looks.

Hands-on with Sprint’s Touch Pro

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

Oh, come on, you know there’s a part of you that wants it. A big part, even. The Touch Diamond is the first new HTC piece to get teed up for Sprint, but the Touch Pro is hot on its heels a few weeks later — and with a QWERTY keyboard, it’s hard to ignore. Question is, is it worth the extra wait? Well, ease your troubled mind for just a second and take a gander at our gallery on Engadget Mobile — we’re not saying it’s going to make your decision any easier, we’re just saying everyone likes pretty pictures.

Android gets handled, now with Street View

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

While Apple might have your attention at the moment with that impending SDK, the Android OS seems to be coming along quite nicely over at Google and the Open Handset Alliance. BBC’s Darren Waters got to peek “under the bonnet” with Andy Rubin himself, and has video to prove it. The OS was running on an unknown 3G touchscreen prototype, which also had a track ball at the bottom. The interface has come a long way since we saw it first, and browsing the web looks snappy and intuitive. Andy also showed off a version of Street View — complete with smooth panning and zooming, of course — and the fan-favorite Quake demo. Not bad at all for a 300MHz-ish processor, and while Android is still in “Alpha” stage, it’s already got a lot of good things going for it. Video is after the break.

[Thanks, Omar A.]

E-TEN glofiish V900 surfaces, flush with mobile TV support

Friday, January 11th, 2008

Very little is known about the glofiish V900 from E-TEN — in fact, nothing is known about it other than what we have on this promotional image advertising E-TEN’s presence at the GSM Association’s Mobile World Congress next month. What few details are revealed here, though, are pretty freakin’ notable. The V900 apparently supports DVB-H, DVB-T, T-DMB, and DAB broadcasts, unifying half a world’s worth of digital television and radio broadcast standards in a single device. We guess we’ll have to wait until the big show in a few weeks to figure out the rest, but if we were the betting types, we’d wager that it’ll probably be available in black and blue.

uPlay touts “iPhone of golf GPS technology”

Thursday, January 10th, 2008

Filed under:

There’s certainly no shortage of GPS devices out there to aid your golf game, but the folks at uPlay seem to think they’ve got one to beat ‘em all, with them even going so far as to tout their new uPro device as the “iPhone of golf GPS technology.” Exactly what earns it that designation, we’re not sure, but the device will let golfers determine the distance to holes from their current location, and give them aerial photography, video flyovers, and details on course hazards, among other things. No word on a price or release date just yet, it seems, but we’d expect those details to be revealed when uPlay shows off the device at the 2008 PGA Show that gets underway in Orlando on January 16th.

LG’s BH200 HD DVD / Blu-ray player gets reviewed

Tuesday, December 11th, 2007

Although we were able to get the B𑨈 to pose for a few glamour shots back at CEDIA, the recently released player has just now got around to checking in for a review. According to Home Theater Mag, the BH200 exhibited “stunning” image quality from both Blu-ray and HD DVD titles, and moreover, the video processing (DVD upconversion included) was “as good as any it had seen in a disc player.” Unfortunately, the (high) praise essentially ended there. First and foremost, it made little sense to the reviewer to pay such a high premium ($999) for a dual-format unit unless you place a great deal of value on size and convenience. Beyond that, the player really dropped the ball on high-resolution audio playback, as HTM couldn’t even get it to output Dolby TrueHD in multichannel form from “any output, at any resolution.” Overall, the BH200 turned out to be a mixed bag, and while strict videophiles may find nothing to kvetch about, its inability to handle certain audio codecs was viewed as a “serious shortcoming.” Nevertheless, there’s much, much more where this came from if you’re in the market, so head on over to the read link to catch the full spill.

LG’s “Super Blu” BH200 HD DVD / Blu-ray combo player now available

Monday, December 10th, 2007

After a slight delay and a false alarm, LG has finally announced that its “Super Blu” BH200 HD DVD / Blu-ray combo player is now available at retailers nationwide, for the not so low price of $999. In addition to playing both HD formats, the player also has the somewhat notable distinction of being the first player to support Blu-ray profile 1.1, although you′ll still have to wait a while to take advantage of that particular feature. Otherwise, you′ll get full 1080p support (including upscaling of DVDs), HDMI 1.3, component and composite video outputs, digital optical and analog audio outputs, and a LAN port, not to mention a USB port on the front for impromptu slide shows or music playback. Now, if only they’d work on getting the cost down to something less than the combined cost of an HD DVD and Blu-ray player, we’d be all set.

Dell Vostro 1200 notebook coming this month?

Tuesday, December 4th, 2007

Filed under:

Despite the fact that the esteemed Mr. Mossberg doesn’t seem to care for it too much, Les Delliens has it on good authority that Dell will be upgrading its line of Vostro small business systems this month, in the form of the 1200 laptop. Specs are not yet available to accompany the above pic, but we can assume from the model number that this will likely be an upgrade to the Vostro 1000, a low-end, AMD-powered 12.1-incher. In other Dell news — well, other other news, really — the same Les Delliens forum member has confirmed specs and images of the upcoming Inspiron 1525 / 1526 (pictured after the break), a 15.4-inch notebook rocking any number of CPU options from AMD or Intel and said to launching in Europe on December 14th — four days before the rumored Vostro announcement.

Dell’s 15.4-inch Vostro 1000 laptop hits $399

Tuesday, November 20th, 2007

Filed under:

Tired of waiting for Black Friday? Just plain terrified of getting mauled? If you happen to fit into either of the aforementioned categories, take heart, as Dell’s got you covered. The firm’s 15.4-inch Vostro 1000 — which was listed earlier this year for as low as $449 — has now dipped $50 lower to crack the oh-so-crucial $400 barrier. The all-black lappie features a 1.7GHz AMD Athlon 64 X2 TK-53 processor, Windows XP Home Edition, an XGA panel, 120GB 5,400 RPM hard drive, 1GB of DD̶ RAM, a DVD writer (with dual-layer DVD+R write capability), ATI’s Radeon Xpress 1150 integrated graphics set, 802.11g WiFi and a four-cell Li-ion battery to boot. Nah, this budget machine won′t satisfactorily churn through any advanced audio / video editing, but we’d bet it can handle Doom just fine.
