After personally trying out Sprint’s AIRAVE, we’re confident that femtocells have a place in this world. Thankfully, Motorola’s already trying to make them less of an eyesore by integrating a CDMA femtocell into something we wouldn’t mind showing off in the den: an inconspicuous digital photo frame. The “3-in-1″ concept also includes a VoIP soft phone that would theoretically enable calls to be made right from the frame. Of course, Moto’s not handing out any sort of release time frame, but let us be the first to say that this thing needs to hit store shelves on the double — just make sure it’s not carrier specific, and toss in a GSM version while you’re at it, okay Moto? Check out the demonstration vid after the break.
[Thanks, Dave]

We already caught of
preview of Canon new
EOS 5D Mark II 21-megapixel monster, but if you′re curious about Canon’s other new camera offerings, you may want to hit up Photography Blog, which has gone hands-on with each of ‘em. That includes the
PowerShot G10 (pictured above), the
PowerShot SX1 IS / SX10 IS, the Digital IXUS
980 IS and 870 IS and, of course, the aforementioned EOS 5D Mark II, just in case you need another look at it. Unfortunately, they don’t have much in the way of first impressions just yet, or any sample shots, but they do at least have a comparison between the G10 and the earlier G9 model for those considering an upgrade, and plenty of high res photos of each camera to let you examine every nook and cranny. Hit up the links below to dig in.

Canon went a bit berserk this morning, but without a doubt the looker from the crowd is the 21-megapixel EOS 5D Mark II. Make no mistake, this bad boy is bringing all sorts of new and revamped technology to the game, and thanks to the good folks over at DPReview, you don’t have to waste your day trying to piece it all together. Linked below is a 13-page “preview” that dishes out more details on the specs, changes, operation, design, menus and favorite date spots than you could ever fathom. Being the DSLR freak that you are, however, we know you’ve already ventured off and are onto page 2. No hard feelings, though.

Canon USA just announced the Canon 5D Mark II, continuing the tradition of offering full-frame digital SLRs at a significantly lower price. For the uninitiated, full-frame dSLRs feature an image sensor as big as a 35mm film frame, allowing more versatility in terms of photographic possibilities and usable lens.
Anyways, this baby’s powered by the DIGIC 4 image sensor, sensitivity up to ISO 25,600, and the ability to capture full-HD clips at 1920 x 1080 resolution—with a max of 30 minutes or 4GB (looks like Canon’s stepping up to the Nikon D90’s challenge). Whatever’s captured is viewable via the 3″ screen on the back, or by an HD display via the HDMI port.
Canon promises an SRP of “only” $1,699, which is a lot less than the initial $3,000 price tag of the first 5D. Check out all the details in the full press release.

No word on a US release but Canon announced its new SX1 IS for seemingly everyplace else. The camera carries over the looks of the SX10 IS while opting for a 10 megapixel 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor capable of shooting 4fps full resolution JPEG stills or Full HD, H.264 video at 30fps for up to 30 minutes at a time (SD for up to an hour). It packs a DIGIC 4 image processor, optical image stabilization, and same 20x wide-angle zoom like the SX10 but opts for HDMI output and a slightly larger, 2.8-inch LCD around back. Priced at £520 which will translate to a lot less than the US equivalent $927 should this camera ever ship Stateside.

Finishing off Canon’s new gear launches today are the PowerShot S IS and S𐴐 IS Digital Elph series of cameras. Both start with optical image stabilization and Canon’s new DIGIC 4 image processor. The $400 S IS then sprinkles in a 14.7 megapixel sensor, 3.7x optical zoom, and 2.5-inch LCD while the $300 S𐴐 IS drops the sensor to 10 megapixels while boosting the LCD and Zoom a bit to 3-inches and 4x, respectively. Both should land for retail sometime in October.

After a
brief tease, Canon just got official with its EOS 5D Mark II. The full-frame shooter updates the original 5D introduced back in 2005 with a 24 x 36mm 21.1 megapixel CMOS sensor, DIGIC 4 processor with 14-bit analog-to-digital conversion, and the ability to capture Full HD 1,920 x 1,080 video — take
that Nikon and your paltry 720p. We’re talking expanded 50-25,600 ISO range,15-point autofocus with 9 selectable AF points, 3-inch Live View LCD offering 4x the pixels of the original 5D, and a 3.9fps burst for unlimited JPEGs or up to 14 RAW images when using a UDMA CF card.
With regard to video, the EOS 5D Mark II captures Full HD video at 30fps as well as VGA / 30fps for the first time on any Canon SLR. Of course, it works with any of Canon’s 60 EF lenses (and whatever Carl Zeiss cooks up) for ultra-wide-angle, fish-eye, macro, and super-telephoto videography. Video can be recorded at up to 4GB per clip which is equivalent to about 12 minutes of Full HD video or 24 minutes in VGA. Video clips are recorded in .MOV format using MPEG-4 video compression and linear PCM audio. You can even record with external stereo mics attached to an input terminal.
At the end of November, Canon will sell the body-only for $2,699 or bundled with Canon’s 24-105mm f/4L IS USM zoom lens for $3,499. Welcome back to the show Canon, we were starting to worry.

When Canon answered the rumor calls with its official unveiling of the 15.1-megapixel EOS 50D, it failed to nail down an exact release date. Thankfully, Circuit City has informed us that “October” really means “October 6th,” and the beastly DSLR is up for pre-order right now for $1,399.99 (body only) / $1,599.99 (kit with EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM zoom lens). Just over a fortnight to wait — surely you can twiddle your thumbs until then, yeah?

We don’t cover too many lenses here at
Engadget. However, when Carl Zeiss surprisingly announces support for Canon’s EF mount, well, we′re pretty sure you′d like to know. The first
EOS compatible lenses in the ZE range will be the Planar T* 1.4/50mm (pictured) and 1.4/85mm manual focus lenses priced at $660 and $1,170, respectively, when they ship before the end of the year.

So much for that ta-da event tomorrow — Microsoft just confirmed the fall Zune lineup a little earlier than planned, and it’s almost exactly as leaked: capacity bumps to 120GB and 16GB, new WiFi music store, Zune 3.0 software with recommendations and pre-programmed theme channels, and two new games, Hexic and Texas Hold ‘Em. Oh, and that snappy blue flash Zune we just spotted. Pricing is similarly unsurprising, seeing as we’ve had it for a week: the 120GB Zune is $250, while the 16GB flash model is $199 and the 8 gigger is $149. Oh well, at least we still have those new mice and webcams to look forward to tomorrow, right? Certainly nothing else is going on.

Update: The official PR is out, looks like Zune owners can look forward to the Zune 3.0 software update on September 16. Oh, and there’s new Audible support as well. Rock on, rockers.

Hey, is that the fabled blue flash Zune, all priced up and sitting on a Walmart shelf in Knoxville, Tennessee a whole day before it’s scheduled to launch? Indeed it is — let’s hope those rumored LifeCams are pretty spectacular, because we done just scooped every other product Redmond has on tap for tomorrow. You’re next, Stevie.

After suffering a presumed Jolly Rancher infestation, ASUS is prepped to loose these artificially flavored Eee PCs onto Korea. Available for pre-order now, the limited edition “pink” (hey, that’s what they say) and Jell-O green Eee PC 901 and Eee PC 1000H ship on the 22nd of August for an undetermined price. Hmmm, blood-red snowflakes and glo-stick mistletoe? Feels like Christmas in our very own Eee PC hell.

Engadget Chinese received the slide image above showing ASUS’ Eee PC roadmap. Go ahead count ‘em up, we’ll wait… Right, 23 Eee PCs before they’re done, some of which we’ve already seen. The “extreme slim and light” S101 and S91 models, however, are new and tantalizing Eee PC “Ultimate” series additions. Models we suspect will compete nicely with the
Dell E Slim. Really though, 23 models ASUS? Guess we shouldn’t be surprised, after all, this is the same company that offers more than 50 models (not just configurations) of laptops.

Packing up for Maker Faire, I was debating whether to bring my old iPod as a back-up to my iPhone. That got me thinking about ways I might make use of my iPod besides just insuring music and address book redundancy. On TravelHacker, I found this round-up of 75+ tutorials on everything from turning it into a guitar tuner to using it as a universal remote, to an ebook reader, to turning it into money (ah, as in selling it…).
