We’ve heard plenty of promises of external graphics solutions for laptops in the past, and it looks like Fujitsu Siemens is now about to join the party as well, with it reportedly set to debut its AMILO GraphicBooster in the “next couple of weeks.” That word apparently comes from a leaked presentation from the company which, unfortunately, doesn’t include all the details we’d like, but does at least reveal a few tantalizing bits of information. As Notebook Review reports, the device is based on ATI XGP technology, which supposedly provides a 4.7X boost in graphics performance over a standard Fujitsu AMILO laptop (it’s not clear if they’re talking about integrated graphics or not), or a score of about 8,000 in 3DMark06 benchmarks. What’s more, the device will also apparently let you connect up to three external displays to your laptop, with both DVI-D and HDMI ports provided. Of course, there’s no word on pricing or availability, which could lead one to suspect that this is yet another device we’ll still be hearing about a year from now — if you’re the cynical type, that is.

Reportedly, the creature you see above has been loaded with learning algorithms that enable it to repeat actions that it learns. Wonder if anyone realized that this totally demented critter just learned to slice more than ham? Stay sharp, kids — the video’s after the break.

Believe it or not, tesla coils are good for more than just creating lighting, protecting one’s laptop or cranking out a sweet tune — and the folks watching a dazzling demonstration at Maker Faire 2008 can attest to that. Apparently a group of prototype (1 / 12 scale, no less) coils were seen sparking up the evening in San Mateo, California, but it wasn’t the visual energy or unmistakable hum that caused all that saliva to form in the mouths of onlookers. Oh no, it was the fact that a dozen hot dogs were simultaneously roasted and made ready for safe consumption. Check out a video of the action right after the break.

Une pluie d’annonces pour Microsoft en ce moment. Après un pas
de plus vers l’interop, une seconde annonce plus discrète a eu lieu hier pendant
le Game Developers Conference. Celle-ci concerne une extension XNA
pour Zune. Et? Pour résumer: à partir d’un même environnement de développement,
les développeurs de jeux vidéos pourront développer
un même jeu pour les 3 plateformes: PC, Xbox360 et maintenant Zune!

La fonctionnalité sans fil du Zune permettra de jouer avec ses amis à proximité à
un même jeu.

XNA permet un développement des jeux accéléré grâce à l’abstraction
d’un certain nombre de notions nécessaires pour le développement de jeux vidéos via
son framework. On estime pouvoir développer un jeu de 5 à 10 fois plus vite
en utilisant XNA, en plus de pouvoir le déployer sur les 3 plateformes.

Fujitsu’s marvelously light LOOX U50XN — better known as the U810 here in the States — just keeps getting better. Apparently, to-be owners in Japan can now snag one with an oh-so-coveted 64GB SSD, though all the other specs look to remain identical to what we’ve already seen. ‘Course, adding such a fine piece of hardware won’t come cheap — as a matter of fact, you’ll be forced to cough up an extra ¥95,000 ($887) for the privilege. Oh, and the unconfirmed word on the street has the new drive option coming stateside in March, but don’t bet the farm on that just yet, alright?

You probably remember the SplashTop instant-on, Linux-based OS from past posts or perhaps developer DeviceVM’s demo at last October’s reader meetup in San Francisco. It’s well known that this embedded feature will ship standard on select ASUS motherboards, but as we were cruising around the PC manufacturer’s booth today, we happened to catch a rather unexpected application for SplashTop: running on the EeePC. Neither ASUS nor DeviceVM has made any announcements with regard to porting the software onto the popular ultra-portable laptop, but unless our eyes were deceiving us, this Eee was all ready to run Pidgin, Skype, or a browser without booting into the main OS. We’ll keep our eye on this one, as the merger of these two technologies would certainly create quite the compelling user experience.
