4GB iPod nano 4Gs show up on Best Buy’s Canadian site

Sunday, September 21st, 2008

Look, we know there’s some kind of good explanation for these things existing, but Apple, don’t you think it’s a little weird how they keep cropping up in stores even though you never, ever mentioned them? That’s right, those 4GB iPod nano 4Gs we saw at Dutch retailers last week have now made their way onto Best Buy’s Canadian website. Over in North America, the players will apparently sell for $139, and will be available tomorrow… or so they say.

[Thanks, Robert]

Apple iPod touch 2G and nano 4G: The Engadget Review

Friday, September 19th, 2008

It’s been just over a week since we ran a smash-and-grab at Apple’s unveiling of its newest entries to the iPod family, the nano 4G and touch 2G. The devices, both set along an evolutionary (rather than revolutionary) path have certainly been nipped, tucked, and updated — but we wanted to know if they′d been improved at all. For the nano, we’ve seen some iteration of the same device for years now, leaving questions as to how much further you can take a low-end music player, while the touch is another story completely a handheld which treads that ever-thinning line between entertainment device and micro-computer. Do either of these products hit their marks, or has Apple overextended itself in its pursuit of market saturation? Keep reading to find out.

Mysterious new 4GB iPod nano 4Gs begin appearing on store shelves

Wednesday, September 17th, 2008

digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/apple/Mystery_4GB_iPod_nano_4Gs_show_up_at_stores’; Now this is an interesting development. According to two separate tipsters (with two sets of photos) Apple has released a third version of the new multi-hued iPod nano to the world — a 4GB model. As there’s been no announcement from the company, and there was certainly no mention of it at the ‘Let’s Rock’ event, this is quite a head-scratcher. According to sources (and a Dutch retailer’s site), the models are available in all nine colors and are priced at €119 (or about $168) — though there seems to be some debate as to whether these lower capacity versions are limited editions or simply an incredible gaffe on Apple’s part. Regardless, they appear to be the real thing, and they appear to be on store shelves right now (in some countries, at least). If you′re looking for the ultimate Apple collector’s item, this may be just the thing. Check out the gallery below for lots of looks at the mystery nano.

Sony debuts HDR-FX1000, HVR-Z5J high-def camcorders

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

Filed under:

It looks like those not willing to give up on DV tape for their HD recording needs now have a pair of new options to consider from Sony, which has just introduced its HDR-FX1000 and HVR-Z5J camcorders in Japan. The HDR-FX1000 (pictured above) is the slightly more consumer-minded of the two, with it boasting a not-outrageous price of &yen400,000 (or roughtly $3,700), and some impressive specs all around, including a 20x optical zoom, both 24p and 30p modes, and Sony’s G-series lens, which promises to deliver some top-notch images. The HVR-Z5J, on the other hand, offers some more specialized features like XLR audio inputs, PAL and NTSC compatibility, and support for the DVCAM format in addition to usual DV/HDV option. Look for it to set you back &yen554,400 (or just over $5,000) when it lands in December, with the HDR-FX1000 set to slip out ahead of it on November 10th.

Sanyo confesses its love for water with Xacti E2 pocket camcorder

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008

Filed under:

The predictably named successor to the Xacti E1 has finally arrived, and it’s just as waterproof as the original. The Xacti ʴ records MPEG-4 AVC / H.264 video at 640 x 480, snaps stills at 8-megapixels, captures content onto SD / SDHC cards and features a 2.5-inch flip-out LCD for easy viewing of what footage you’re snagging. There’s also a 5x optical zoom and Face Chaser technology, the latter of which uses a “proprietary Sanyo algorithm to compensate for distracting up-and-down or side-to-side camera movement, keeping your subject steady and easy to follow.” The 9.1-ounce device (in brilliant blue or pearlescent white) is available now in the US for a penny shy of $400.

Sanyo’s Xacti 1010 gets the hands-on treatment

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008

Filed under:

Sanyo’s latest 1080i pocket camcorder (that’d be the Xacti 1010) was just sitting there all pretty like at IFA 2008, so our compadres over at Engadget Spanish took the liberty of posting up a gallery of hands-on shots. Not too many surprises in terms of design, but the demonstrative video of the super slow-mo mode is pretty trippy to say the least. Head on over and give it a look, won’t you?

Panasonic’s HDC-SD100 HD camcorder does the review thing

Sunday, August 31st, 2008

Filed under:

Surely you remember Panny’s new duo of camcorders that featured the so-called 3MOS technology. No? At any rate, Panasonic’s HDC-SD100 has just been reviewed by the cool cats over at TrustedReviews, and while we′re not sure if all that MOS was the reason for its success, critics were generally pleased with the performance (at least in good lighting). They noted that point-and-shoot fans would likely be thrilled, but the professionals in the crowd will probably wish for a few more manual controls. Still, at the end of the day, reviewers proclaimed that if you’ve been “holding out for an AVCHD camcorder with the full gamut of professional features, this could be your dream come true at last.” You hear that? Dream come true, son.

DXG’s DXG-595V HD camcorder does 1080p for 200 bones

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

Filed under:

We’ve seriously stopped trying to understand what differentiates one DXG camcorder from the next. Every release reads something like “blah, blah, 1080p,” followed by a price that’s simply too good to be true. The DXG-595V claims to capture 1080p (imagine that!) video onto your SDHC card for a mere $200, and the ability to snag stills / connect to your SDTV via composite or S-Video is thrown in for free. Thanks, DXG — can’t wait for you to slap a new model number on some leftover inventory and treat us again next month.

Nickelodeon and friends unveil more Npower gizmos

Tuesday, August 19th, 2008

We’ve never been big fans of giving your tween some Nickelodeon-ized gizmo when you can simply hand down your current gear and use it for an excuse to upgrade, but apparently not everyone sees it that way. Nickelodeon, Viacom and Imation have jointly announced the latest line of kid-friendly Npower gizmos, which includes a digital voice recorder, a digicam and a webcam based on the “breakout hit” iCarly. Additionally, the outfit is churning out SpongeBob SquarePants-themed speakers, boomboxes, MP3 players and digiframes, and there’s even a few Dora the Explorer toys thrown in for good measure. All the (inflated) prices and shipping details are down there in the read link — we won’t bore the uninterested any longer by fleshing it out here.

Aiptek keeps the crap flowing with AHD 300 “1080p” camcorder

Monday, August 11th, 2008

Filed under:

To be completely honest, we’re not so sure there’s any real difference between any of Aiptek’s crapcorders. They all seem to boast some form of HD capturing abilities, utterly worthless digital zooms and expansion slots for your SDHC card of choice. Additionally, they all produce output that’s marginally better than mediocre and cost next-to-nothing compared to “real” HD camcorders. Are we missing anything, or do you really want us to run down the official specs list of the £129.99 ($249) AHD 300?

Hitachi reveals Blu-ray / HDD / SDHC DZ-BD10HA high-def camcorder

Monday, August 11th, 2008

Filed under:

Far from being the first Blu-ray hybrid camcorder from Hitachi, the DZ-BD10HA ups the ante even further by tossing in a third format. Yep, this Full HD (1,920 x 1,080) camcorder can record to BD, SDHC or the 30GB hard drive. Additionally, you’ll find a 7-megapixel CMOS sensor, push-of-a-button dubbing from HDD / SDHC to Blu-ray, a host of editing functions, a transcoding feature to transfer HD videos to vanilla DVDs, face detection and optical image stabilization for good measure. The pain? $999 when it lands in North America next month.

Kodak’s $180 Zi6 HD pocket video camera up for pre-order

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

There’s still a great chance that this thing will completely underwhelm, but those willing to give it a shot without reading so much as a single review can now secure their place in line. For $179.95, to-be owners can pre-order Kodak’s Zi6 HD pocket video camera in either pink or black, but there’s no mention of how soon it’ll ship. Anyone taking the plunge (and willing to admit it)?

Canon gets official with VIXIA HD camcorders, HF11 gets reviewed

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

Thanks to an early jump in Japan, we already knew that Canon’s VIXIA line was getting a refresh, but now we can rest easy knowing they’ll be coming to America. The H᭣ Dual Flash camcorder (32GB in addition to an SDHC slot) and HG20 (60GB) / HG21 (120GB) HDD camcorders all boast 1,920 x 1,080 capture modes, Instant AutoFocus, SuperRange Optical Image Stabilization and 24Mbps recording to the AVCHD format. The whole lot is expected to ship next month for $1,199, $949 and $1,299 in order of mention, and the increasingly intriguing H᭣ has already spent some quality time on Camcorder Info’s review bench. Check out the in-depth writeup below before pulling that trigger in the heat of the moment.

FujiFilm’s 10 megapixel S2000HD with 15x wide angle zoom quietly introduced

Friday, August 1st, 2008

Filed under:

FujiFilm Canada seems to have jumped the gun and outed a whole suite of cameras this morning. Starting with the headliner, we′ve got this 10 megapixel FinePix 󋈀HD with 15x wide angle zoom and 2.7-inch LCD. Listing for a thrifty CA$300, the 󋈀HD features a 1/2.3-inch CCD capable of capturing 3 megapixel images at 13.5fps and up to 6400 ISO at 5 megapixels with the help of FujiFilm’s dual image stabilization. And “HD” in the name can mean only one thing: this cam also shoots HD video (720p Motion JPEG) in a pinch. No delivery date but we expect that to get sorted just as soon as this becomes officially official.
