Screen grabs: Matt Saracen has iPhone trouble, is still really cute

Thursday, April 3rd, 2008

Filed under:

Screen grabs chronicles the uses (and misuses) of real-world gadgets in today’s movies and TV. Send in your sightings (with screen grab!) to screengrabs at engadget dt com.

Poor Matt, this guy has it so hard. If he isn’t having relational trouble with Julie Taylor, he’s disappointing his dad, his coach (Julie’s dad, conveniently enough), his team, or the entire town of Dillon, Texas. Last thing the guy needs is an iPhone telling him he’s wrong, so we’re going to pin this Friday Night Lights upside-down incident on Zach Gilford, the man behind the cute-shy quarterback legend that is Matt Saracen. You disappoint us, Zach.

[Thanks, EJ]

Video: Lenovo’s Ideapad U8 MID teases with Intel’s Atom

Wednesday, April 2nd, 2008

Oh my. Look at what Lenovo is cooking up with the help of Intel’s newest Atom processor. Unveiled at Intel’s IDF in Shanghai, the new Ideapad ͚ device features a 4.8-inch touchscreen display and bullseye, optical mouse for (supposedly) one-handed operation while surfing the web over EDGE or 3G data — presumably China’s TD-SCDMA. The device also features “Live GPS,” hand writing recognition, and support for MS Office applications. We’re guessing it’ll also make a phone call or two with that 12-key numeric pad. And with Intel calling this a MID, don’t expect to see a Microsoft OS riding that Atom, this pup’s looking Linux to the bone. Check the video after the break.

China Mobile firing up TD-SCDMA trials this April

Friday, March 28th, 2008

We’ve been hearing that China Mobile would have its act together and get TD-SCDMA ready well in advance of the 2008 Beijing Olympics since last November, and with merely months to spare, it seems things just may work out. Reportedly, the carrier is all set to begin commercial trials of the home cooked 3G standard on April 1st, where it will be tested in Shanghai, Tianjin, Shenyang, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Xiamen, Qinhuangdao and of course, Beijing. Initially, China Mobile Group will provide 20,000 lucky souls with free TD-SCDMA phones and subsidies of 800 yuan per month, while folks outside of that group can also walk into retail outlets and pick up discounted handsets on a whim. Maybe it’s just us, but we’d probably hold off until those guinea pigs gave everyone else a heads-up of the network quality before we went dropping our own change on it.

Chinese LionKing800 cellphone claims 1-year standby

Thursday, March 13th, 2008

Filed under:

We have no way to confirm the claim, nevertheless the LionKin𙕸 boasts a remarkable 365 days standby or 3-5 days talk. The source of that power is a 16,800mAh lithium battery — that’s about 10x the juice of a standard cellphone battery. Take that Philips! As to the rest of the specs, the GSM900 / DC󋄸 dual-SIM phone costs $145 and packs a 3.5-inch, 320 x 240 pixel display, 256MB of microSD memory, Bluetooth 2.0, and a pair of rear and front-facing cameras into a 120 x 65 x 20-mm shell. Picture of the battery after the break.

MP7 phone makes MP3 feel totally insignificant

Monday, March 10th, 2008

Filed under:

We’ve seen phones that push the boundaries of chintziness, but this newfangled M̧ phone really shows what humans are capable of when they′ve no motivation to assemble a decent product. Granted, most everything here is lost in translation, but the blatant “Blue tooth” logo on the front pretty much sets it up for disaster. Nevertheless, this GSM handset reportedly comes in silver or black and features a 320 x 240 touchscreen display, a 1.3-megapixel camera, built-in FM tuner and support for some form of mobile TV along with the elusive “M̧″ format. Best of all, this marvelous gem of handset engineering can be had for $599.90 (or a dozen easy payments of $59.99) — we can hear the N95 cowering from here (or is that laughter?).

Greener Gadgets Design Competition winners on display

Saturday, February 9th, 2008

You may have heard a little something about the Greener Gadgets Conference, a gathering in New York focused on cleaner, renewable, recyclable, or generally forward-thinking technology and design. At the end of the one-day event, Core77 editor-in-chief Allan Chochinov MC’d a showcase of entrants to a design competition held by the Greener Gadgets team, which were then vetted and discussed by co-organizer (and Inhabitat editor-in-chief) Jill Fehrenbacher, Valerie Casey of IDEO and The Designers Accord, and our own special-somebody, Ryan Block. When the dust settled, first prize went to crowd favorite Ener-Jar — a DIY project which allows you to easily view how much energy an appliance is using. Second place was snapped up by the Gravia, a gravity-based lamp which generates its own power by slowly dropping a weight in its center. The third place spot was nabbed by the Green Cell Universal Battery, a standardized battery which could be swapped out in vending machines. Sure, they probably won′t inspire you to trade in your gas-guzzling Hummer for a bike any time soon, but this stuff might at least get you thinking in the right direction. Check the video after the break to see how it all went down.

Next up is the elusive X Plate, a 64-gram sophisticated toy that boasts a 1.8-inch LCD along with Java and Flash support. Plenty of pics waiting in the links below, so go on, take a peek at what America’s missing out on.

Jobs: China Mobile talks aren’t off, because they were never on

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

Filed under:

In a Macworld post-keynote interview with CNBC yesterday, Steve Jobs was pimping the iPhone’s numbers since launch (over four million sold — a number Wall Street didn’t like, but what can you do?) between rants about the MacBook Air’s qualities and, at some point, got on the topic of bringing the iPhone to China. The popular rumor over the last couple months has been that Apple had been working with China Mobile on making a launch happen but that talks eventually broke down. Here, Steve says that’s simply not the case; a single rep from China Mobile visited the Apple campus all of once, and that’s it. He’d love to bring the iPhone to the Far East (or so he says), but the fact remains that there aren’t any heated discussions going on with the major players. At least, that’s what Steve claims — and as we all know, CEO reality can be very, very different from real reality.

China’s largest carrier ends talks for Apple iPhone

Monday, January 14th, 2008

It wouldn’t be the first time a company has used the press to bolster their negotiating position. Nevertheless, after saying the “iPhone model was not suitable for China” back in November, a spokesperson for China Mobile now says they’ve “terminated” discussions with Apple to bring the iPhone to China. China’s largest carrier gave no reasons for the decision though the fee sharing agreement is likely a contributing factor. Well Steve, there’s always China Unicom.
