Startup Offers Instant-Boot Windows Alternative

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

Lucas123 writes “A Silicon Valley startup named Device VM has a product that circumvents the boot-up process, according to a story in MIT’s Technology Review. Device VM recently released a tiny piece of software that gives users the option to boot either Windows or a faster, less-complex operating system called Splashtop. The company is partnering with PC OEMs and consumer electronics companies to integrate its core technology into desktops, notebooks, ultra-mobile PCs, and other devices.”

Apple ships five million copies of Leopard in three months

Tuesday, January 15th, 2008

It was but a few months ago that Apple trumpeted the fact that two million copies of Leopard had been sold in its first weekend. As of Macworld 2008, you can add three million more to that figure. According to Jobs, it’s the “most successful release of OS X ever,” and nearly 20-percent of the install base has made the leap to 10.5. Oh, and just in case you were wondering about Office Mac 2008, it is indeed shipping today, which means that all the “big apps″ for OS X are finally Intel native.

Windows Vista SP1 RC Refresh available to the public

Monday, January 14th, 2008

Just as Microsoft did last month with Vista SP1 release candidate, the latest build (dubbed SP1 RC Refresh) has been loosed from its privately held shackles and is now available for the public to descend upon. According to ZDNet, Redmond decided to make this iteration publicly available “in the interest of gaining additional tester feedback.” Of note, you will likely be forced to install “two or three updates” before S̡ RC Refresh can be installed, but we know you’re quite unconcerned with all the fine print. Nevertheless, that verbiage (and the download link) is waiting below.

Gentoo in Crisis, Robbins Offers Solution

Saturday, January 12th, 2008

mrbadbar writes “Gentoo Linux founder Daniel Robbins says Gentoo’s leadership is in crisis. ‘the Gentoo Foundation’s charter has been revoked for several weeks, which means that as of this moment the Gentoo Foundation no longer exists.’ Robbins offers a solution: his return as President of the Gentoo Foundation. According to Robbins: ‘If I return as President, I will preserve the not-for-profit aspect of Gentoo. Beyond this, you can expect everything to be very, very different than how things are today.’”

Microsoft sez no OLPC dual-boot, still committed to XP on XO

Friday, January 11th, 2008

Filed under:

Those of you who participated in OLPC’s “Give One, Get One” program will probably be disappointed to learn that, despite earlier reports to the contrary, Microsoft has no intention of developing dual-boot Windows / Linux support for the XO laptop. According to a statement sent to BetaNews, Redmond flat out denied any work on such a project, instead claiming that it “plans to publish formal design guidelines early this year that will assist [any] flash-based device manufacturers in designing machines that enable a high-quality Windows experience.” The blurb goes on to say that the company will be conducting limited XP-on-XO field tests later this month, although BetaNews notes that notebook’s hardware limitations have proven problematic for the software giant, which may be forced to offer the OS on an SD card — a move that would require a new BIOS for the XO to enable booting from removable storage.

Kopin lays claim to world’s smallest color SVGA display

Thursday, January 10th, 2008

It looks like the various companies that rely on Kopin displays for their gear could soon be soon be dishing out a round of upgrades, as the company has just unveiled what it claims is the world’s smallest color SVGA display. Those possible upgrades are made all the more likely by the fact that Kopin’s new so-called CyberDisplay SVGA LVS boasts exactly the same 0.44-inch diagonal size as its current VGA model, which allows it to use the same optics and housing, with the size of the connecting cable the only difference. While there’s no word on any eyewear or other devices set to use the new display just yet, “select customers” looking to put it to use can apparently get their sample units for evaluation from Kopin right now.

Sim2 announces $12,000 Domino 80E projector

Monday, December 10th, 2007

It’s certainly not for everyone, but those willing to tread into five-digit territory for the benefit of their home theater may want to consider Sim2’s just-announced Domino 80E projector which, at $12,000 is actually a bit of a bargain compared to some of the company’s other projectors. For that price, you’ll of course get a full 1080p projector, along with DarkChiѣ DLP technology, a 4,500:1 contrast ratio, and just about every port you could want. As if that wasn’t enough, you can also add an optional 2.35:1 anamorphic lens adapter, which apparently doesn’t require an external processor to change the aspect ratio and, no doubt just as importantly for some, you can get it in your choice of white or matte black finishes.
