A Great Summary of the RIM-NTP Legal Battle

Friday, October 17th, 2008

It’s almost three years to the day when Everyone Sick of BlackBerry Patent Battle was published. Yet it still provides a great summary of one the more high-profile legal and technological cases in recent history:

Three years ago [2002], a jury decided against the maker of the wireless e-mail device, Research In Motion Ltd., but Spencer held off on an injunction that threatened to shut down BlackBerry service in this country. Now the suit — along with its 40-page docket — is back in his courtroom after a round of appeals.

This time, the judge is clearly running low on patience.

Turns out NTP, painted as a patent troll for suing RIM, even though it did not contribute to the BlackBerry’s success, was somewhat undeserved. Read the full article to see why.

Dangling Dongle Brings GPS to The iPhone

Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008

This rather clunky-looking Apple iPhone add-on brings real GPS to the soon-to-be-obsolete original iPhone.

Consisting a Holux M1000b GPS unit, a custom dock-connector cable and some software which requires a jailbroken iPhone to run.

Here’s a demo video below in which the GPS seems to work fine, updating your position on the iPhone’s built in Google Maps application every second or so:

What it also shows is that you’ll need a minimum of three hands to use it. Darn. I only have two… har har.

You can check out some screenshots over at the company’s blog that show the software turning the iPhone into a big compass, which would seem to be very useful if it, too, didn’t require the big cable and box hanging off the sleek slab.

$100.00 USD for the cable and the GPS unit, $16.00 USD for the cable alone. Good grief Charlie Brown! That seems a little high.

I say wait for the G3 iPhone. Thoughts?

MIU Hybrid Dual Portable Computer - Retro looking

MIU Hybrid Dual Portable Computer - Retro looking

From the land of Korea, we have this retro/brick looking Portable Computer dubbed HDPC that has ugly looking buttons. It’s sort of a PDA cum phone from MIU that boots dual OS (Windows XP/Windows CE 5.0 or Linux Qplus) which will satisfy Windows haters.

It comes with a smalllish QWERTY keyboard, 4-inch display with 800×480 resolution, lasts up to 90 hours on low power mode and wireless internet functions. Don’t expect it to launch outside Korea anytime soon in July 2008.

As the name ‘HDPC’ signifies, user can converge the stand-alone technologies of existing portable devices such as car PC, navigation, mobile phone, PMP, mp3, UMPC, electronic dictionary, internet phone, PSP, digital camera, voice recorder, mobile IPTV into HDPC. The HDPC is expected to be available in July 2008, and the price would be between 400,000(KRW) and 500,000(KRW).

Google Gear on Windows Mobile

Friday, March 14th, 2008

For those Googlers out there, Google has just announced that Google Gears for Mobile. It runs on Windows Mobile, like what they promised to bring it to offline phone application. The first party to use this tempting program would be Zoho, a web based office suite and Buxfer, a personal finance site. Though there are some limitation on getting some web applications to use Google gears (Even Google product can’t support Google Gear yet), it’s good to know that it’s already in mobile version. When coming to think of an overall picture, it’s good to know that, Google is trying to go for Windows mobile first, since a wide range of phone OS were and many other online applications were not supported too.

Rumors also said that, The Google Gears for Windows Mobile is just a developer platform in order to have Gears-supporting apps ready to run on Android. Well, let’s see how it goes. Overall, it’s a good news for most of us.

New Loc8tor Lite looks for missing items

New Loc8tor Lite looks for missing items

Have you ever lost your keys or wallet just before that important meeting or date? Well I have and it’s an embarrassing predicament of which most people would not like to get into. Its just that I have too many things on my mind and when I can’t find my car keys, you’ll have to turn the whole house upside down. Thanks to New LoϦtor Lite, you can now track small items like keys up to 400 feet away.

According to Nielsen Media Research, the average American spends 90 minutes a day frantically looking for lost and misplaced items. Unlike anything else available on the market, the new Loc8tor Lite ($79.99) uses audio and visual directional cues to guide users directly to the lost item…though I much prefer the Loc8tor Pack since that handheld version has a cool visual LCD instead of a bunch of lights.

* Smallest size tracking device of its kind, the credit card sized handheld device with tags equivalent in height to a paper clip and can fit easily into a pocket.

* From gym bags and eyeglass cases to mobile phones and laptops, Loc8tor Lite’s versatility means it can be used in almost any situation by simply attaching its discrete, easy-to-apply tag to any item.

Now would you not want to buy this the new LoϦtor Lite ($79.99) thingy ? Its a great gift for this upcoming April Fool’s Day. If you pay $20 more at $99, the Loc8tor Pack has a handheld device and 2 homing tags.

HTC Touch Cruise Cases from Proporta

HTC Touch Cruise Cases from Proporta

Proporta, that major mobile accessories company has 2 new casings for HTC Touch Cruise users.

First up we have the infamous Alu-Leather Case (HTC Touch Cruise). One of Proporta’s specialities, this case is precision moulded and therefore fits around your HTC Touch Cruise perfectly; protecting it against anything you wish to throw at it. It also features our trademark ‘Screen Saver System’, which uses a layer of rigid, lightweight aircraft grade aluminium to line the Case protecting it from crushing and impact shocks. So suitably custom made, you’ll never even need to remove the device from its case as it features all the necessary cut outs to give access to all ports and controls.

Next up in the case stakes is the Silicone Case (HTC Touch Cruise). This one is also cleverly precision moulded, but from impact absorbent silicone to provide a thin, yet really tough, protective skin keeping your HTC Touch Cruise safe and sound. It protects against all the effects from everyday use such as scratches and impact damage, aaaaaand the case need never be taken off the device, because in the same way as the Alu-Leather Case, all the necessary cut outs allow access to all ports and controls.

Phew, looks like Proporta has come up with some good looking cases as always.

The iPod and iPhone firmware update 1.1.4 is out

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

Apple iPhone

The iPod and iPhone firmware update 1.1.4 has been released by Apple and it comes out just over a month’s time after the V 1.1.3 came out. Itsd available via the iTunes or it can be downloaded as a 165 MB standalone setup file. Just make sure you backup all your data on your iPod and iPhone or you’ll be tearing your hair out faster than you can say Steve Jobs!

Check out what Erica Sadun went through on the update. I keep my iPod nano in the shelve until V 2.0 comes out. I feel safer doing that.

Here is the 165 MB standalone setup file.

WinCE InfoJack malware on Windows Mobile Devices

WinCE InfoJack malware on Windows Mobile Devices

Windows Mobile device owners beware. There’s a new trojan software that targets Windows Mobile devices and it installs without a warning.

WinCE/InfoJack sends the infected device’s serial number, operating system and other information to the author of the trojan. It also leaves the infected mobile device vulnerable by allowing silent installation of malware. The trojan modifies the infected device’s security setting to allow unsigned applications to be installed without a warning.

More Storage Options in 2008

More Storage Options in 2008

The fun of analyzing the past 12 months is…it’s easy! But forecasting 2008 requires separating dreams from reality…early adopters from mass market. For the early adopters the home entertainment network is here. The converged mobile content/communications device is here. Content when you want it, where you want it, how you want it is here. For the mass market…it’s an awkward transitional period. 2007’s Time Magazine’s Person of the year was … You.

The yous of the world are connected and have the choice of an almost limitless variety of online content – written, photo, music, video. Personal content is gaining momentum. The long tail of entertainment is moving more rapidly than Chris Anderson envisioned when he wrote his first book. The entertainment shift is making micromarket segmentation more important to manufacturers and suppliers.

Consumer advocacy/protection groups historically viewed Microsoft as the big evil one located in Redmond, WA but with tentacles around the globe. Ironically, we don’t view the kind, fun-loving kids of Google in the same manner even though they touch almost everyone on the earth in one way or another multiple times…every day.

They’ve helped us get over concerns of privacy. In just a few minutes you can find out almost anything/everything you want to know about any company, any individual. Get over it ! To help even more they are going to make a move to build out the communications infrastructure and they’ll begin offering location tracking “services” all just to help…you!

But how can you consider any of the Googlites activities/efforts could ever be used for evil when they have vowed they will do everything in their power to regreen the planet?

Because of the glut and demand for content, Time Magazine’s person of the year for 2008 will undoubtedly be…Storage !

Storage for the home. Storage for the mobile device. Storage for the personal stuff.

While everyone still has closets, drawers, storage sites stashed with dusty analog content the cost and work of bringing it into the digital era is more than anyone wants to contemplate. But today’s stuff is a different matter!

The new product, new technology buzz of solutions for the home is just beginning this year and it will have a ways to go before it reaches mass market. A few manufacturers like HP are delivering first generation home network storage solutions that kinda work with and for the customer rather than in their own engineered manner.

By the end of 2008, 1TB/2TB home servers will become normal. 250GB storage in notebook and desktop systems will become standard. 80GB mobile devices will be “expected” as we use them to carry our music, photos, video, web shows, TV fare. The biggest winner in this HD space will be the one who does more than just offers higher capacity, cheaper bit buckets. The edge will go to the producer who can deliver diagnostic and health maintenance intelligence, not the one who can simply squeeze more data on a single platter.

At home and away the demand is going to be connected to/using your content in new and different ways. Simplifying the process and making it cheaper, more reliable, more flexible is going to make it easier to kiss fixed providers goodbye …like the cable guy!
