Blast From the Past: Vibrator Usage So Wrong

Monday, September 1st, 2008

The lack of commercial interest in Rez is one of the greatest gaming tragedies. A quirky musical rail-shooter that really didn’t get the attention it deserved. Maybe we have marketing to blame:

And experimentation (kinda NSFW).

rez-003.jpg

The “Trance Vibrator” was designed to help Rez players “feel” the beat, providing stronger vibration than a PS2 controller. But then, when you’re talking about feeling and vibration, you can bet Rule 34 will rear its ugly head.

Can you just load this 12-minute YouTube video and see and hear the actual game for its merits? Please?

Red Alert Available as Free Download

Sunday, August 31st, 2008

ra3promo28.jpg

Kudos to EA for making Command and Conquer: Red Alert available as a free download, in preparation for the release of Red Alert 3—and in celebration of the RTS franchise’s 13th anniversary. Interested parties should visit this page, and set aside enough time for the 1GB download (500MB for each of the two game disks). The downloads are ISO images for burning onto CDs, a task easily accomplished by Totally Free Burner.

Pre-order Red Alert 3 (buyers score a free copy of Red Alert 2 if they pre-order before October 27)

Dance Praise is Dance Dance Revolution for Christians

Friday, August 29th, 2008

dance-praise.jpeg

Right up the trying-to-be-cool-to-be-relevant alley (much like Guitar Praise), Dance Praise puts a Christian spin on Dance Dance Revolution. Featuring Christian-friendly music, the game is more or less similar to its secular, “worldly” counterpart. It’s hard not to disagree with the assertion that “contemporary Christian music” is one “of today’s most popular entertainment trends”.

Dance Praise is available in multiple packages, designed to suit the needs of one to four players, priced from $50 to a discounted price of $350. Check out the online store, and thanks to Jayvee for the tip.

The PACMAN Mini: Portable Namco Games

Friday, August 29th, 2008

P6190003.jpg
I really like this project, although I immediately thought it should be called “Pac Man Portable” or PMP.

This portable took around two weeks to build. I left it with out sound support because the sounds that the namco “arcade pcb on a chip” produces aren’t as good as the original games. The case is an just a general project box with holes cut for the screen, buttons etc.

Elmo guitar hero mod lets kids rock with the best of them

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

elmogh.jpg

Do you play Guitar Hero everyday but are sick of the standard controllers that come with the game? This “Elmo Guitar” was modified by its maker who shoved a standard PS2 controller inside its guts to make it perform like the game’s controller. We like the style of this much better than the ones that come with the game.

Capturing 3D surfaces with a flash camera

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

Capturing 3D surfaces with a flash camera via /.

Comparing a flashlit photo with one taken in ambient light can reveal the texture of a surface, and could help develop more realistic computer games… The virtual worlds in computer games provide a realistic backdrop to the action. But step too close and the effect is lost – you’ll see that textures and patterns are usually displayed on flat surfaces that look dull and artificial.

A simpler way to add depth to textured surfaces could change that.

The new technique can reconstruct the depth of a surface simply by taking two photos of it – one with a flash and one without (see video, right). Merely analysing the resulting shading patterns can capture the surface’s 3D texture.

Until now making realistic textures required the use of bulky and expensive laser scanners, says Mashhuda Glencross at the University of Manchester, UK. And the process is really time-consuming, she adds.

Guitar Praise Will Make You Want to Say “Jesus Christ!”

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

large_guitar_praisev1-thumb-428x169.gif

Christian Rock attempts to turn the so-called “music of the devil” into a tool for venerating the one and only God. Now we’ve got Guitar Praise, which is apparently an attempt to turn that so-called “sinful” game into a tool for venerating the one and only God.

Honestly, all that we can think of is, “why didn’t they think of this sooner?” It’s about time they let you:

Grab the guitar and play along with top Christian bands! Shred those riffs or blast the bass…you add a unique sound to the solid Christian rock. But watch out: if you can’t keep up, the artists will take a break and stop the music. Crank it up and try again—you’ll soon be rockin’ with the best while praising the Lord! Order the second guitar and jam with a friend!

So, future users, it’s performance-level time, unless you want the artists to take a break. The Guitar Praise package works with the Mac or PC, will be available in “mid-September 2008″, and will cost $100. An extra guitar will set you back $70.

“Retro-minimalist homebrew game console”

Monday, August 25th, 2008

Ladyada writes on ladyada’s ranting:

The UzeBox the coolest thing I’ve seen in a really really long time, a full tile-based gaming system built on a Atmega644 + AD725 (which does all the nasty colorburst stuff). Ive spent some time with the AD725 but at the time I was using an Atmega16 and didn’t get nearly as far - pretty much just colorbars.

Walk around Google’s street view with a Wii Fit

Friday, August 22nd, 2008

Yet another hack of the Wii Fit’s cheap sensing board. This Maker has connected it up to the panoramas from Google’s street view so you can literally “walk” down the street of almost any mapped city in the world from the comfort of your own living room. Just be careful of the “virtual” oncoming traffic.

Lucid’s multi-GPU HYDRA technology explained

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

Filed under:

Putting it simply, Lucid’s goal with its HYDRA technology is to “build a completely GPU-independent graphics scaling technology” which enables two completely different cards to work together in harmony with “little to no software overhead.” Let that sink in a minute. Now that a puzzled look has surely overtaken your face, we’d strongly recommend hitting the read link for a (very) detailed look at the technology, an explanation of how it works and even a few hard hitting questions addressed to the company. We’re trying to stifle our excitement here, but are hopes are escalating quickly.

PSP-3001 Redesign Confirmed by the FCC

Friday, August 15th, 2008

psp3001.jpgThe Sony PSP Redesign 3001 seems pretty similar to the original PlayStation Portable platform (specifically, the Slim variant). Take it away Gizmo!

It’s still the same generation PSP and still has most of the same parts (802.11b Wi-Fi) and still plays the same games, so we’re guessing most of the changes will be internal and focused on lowering costs and making the thing harder to hack.

How about a big DO NOT WANT for that last phrase? True, the profit margins of Sony and game developers have to be protected. But do you really want to see the PSP platform lose a lot of its potential versatility?

Then again, no matter the best efforts of manufacturers, those pecky hackers will always find a way. So it’s just a matter of whether the PSP 3001 will offer better battery life, more processing power, in a smaller and lighter case. Stay tuned for updates! (gizmodo.com.au)
