HOW TO - sliding pants rack

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

slidingpantsrackikea.jpg

Instructables user phantazn writes:

I bought a wardrobe from ikea to store my work clothes in. While walking around at ikea, I came across a Pax wardrobe with a Komplement pants hanger on rails. Unfortunately, they did not make them in the size for the cheapo Kullen wardrobe I bought, and I sure as hell wasn’t going to shell out 900+ for a Pax just so I could have the hanger. Plus, it was made out of wire for the most part, and flexed a lot and made a nice “twang” sound when you flicked it.

Satisfying, economical, and handy: Ikea sliding pants rack mod.

Outdoor furniture remake

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

Andrea at Heavy Petal re-made a second-hand metal-framed loveseat and chair into sturdy patio pieces by stripping them down, adding cedar slats, and weather-resistant cushions. The cushions are the same type of foam used for seats on boats, covered with Sunbrella fabric.

No-electricity hot tub

Friday, September 19th, 2008

dutchtub1.jpgdutchtub2.jpg

This hot tub of Dutch design uses a coil around a fire to heat and circulate water from the wooden tub. No electrical hookup required!

After filling the tub with water, a fire can be started in the attached basket to kick start the heating process. The hot water starts to rise in the spiral, which automatically starts pouring in through the spiral, and begins circulating from the bottom to the top. The temperature is adjustable and to warm 700 liters of cold water the tub takes around two and a half hours.

Marbelous table

This design from Tineke Beunders lets you play at the dinner table! From the site:

The world of adults furniture and the world children’s toys don′t seem to belong together. From my childhood I remember it was always exiting to combine these two. I used the woodcarvings of furniture as a playfield for my puppets, to play in a new world. Functional woodcarvings and decoration you can play with. Applying woodcarvings in a piece of furniture that combines the world of adults with the world of the children. A marble track in a table. I’ve created this new type of functional woodcarving, that invites you to play with…

DIY: Retro Entertainment Center

Friday, September 12th, 2008

I really like the looks of this entertainment center. It may appear a bit out dated, but hidden inside is a laptop computer running iTunes. I really like how the screen is integrated into the top. This is so much nicer than many of the “rack” systems out there.

With recognition to the problem of audio and video equipment mucking up ones spaces with lab-like entertainment centers of the 90’s, I came up with something for the person who’s not ready to simply opt for a Bose-iPod dock. I took the idea of the old 50’s stereo system integrated with a piece of furniture in the form of a console. Remember the credenza with the tweed covered speakers built in and the top that opened to reveal a record player? Thats were I’ve come from..

DIY: Reupholster your old furniture

Friday, September 5th, 2008

IMG_4987-1.JPG
This is a nicely documented project that successfully recovers a 1940’s chair. I really like the first step of the build:

Tear up the quote from the professional upholsterer amounting to close to $1,500. You can sew, use a staple gun and a hammer - how hard can it be.

Fast Furniture For Next To Nothing

Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008

Don’t give up on the stacks of your local library as a source for project ideas. “Low Tech: Fast Furniture For Next To Nothing″ was last printed in 1984, but it was well worth a browse.

4 of my favorite projects:

Bike seat / frame to barstool. Kind of obvious when you see it, huh?

I′m not sure why, but I find the giant-hand-holding-hose incredibly appropriate.

PVC piping becomes an easy shelf.

Kitchen retrofitted with corrugated plastic / metal cabinet covers. Stove is on rollers and powered by propane.

Colander Lampshade

Ikea Hacker points out lamps that Jim makes from things he finds at Ikea like this Ordning colander. I can’t say I would ever use a colander as a lampshade, but it does look pretty cool.

Kawaii chairs

Tuesday, August 26th, 2008

Unlike a lot of other chair mods I′ve seen, these actually look cozy. This photo was taken at the 2007 California State Fair. (Via Cute Overload) And if white fluffy animals aren’t to your taste, here are a couple of other takes on the genre from Moss, designed by the Campana brothers.

Robotic Ottoman!

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

Equipped with thermal tracking, ultrasonic proximity sensors, and stylish brown vinyl exterior - RoboStool is everything tired tech-loving feet long for -

In a continuing effort to create unique and unusual robots I just completed RoboStool – a robotic foot stool. Where would such an idea as a robot foot stool come from? I’m not really sure but one day while waiting for my wife to finish shopping in a Bed Bath and Beyond (and totally bored of course) I spied the ultimate in tacky furniture - a cubed shaped foot stool covered in the finest of brown vinyl. At that moment it occurred to me that this foot stool was just begging to be automated. And thus began the RoboStool project.

Now where’s the control that activates the Reclin-o-Tron?
