Alan Colmes Leaves Hannity & Colmes

Monday, November 24th, 2008

FOX News Channels’ Alan Colmes is leaving Hannity &amp Colmes (H&ampC) at the end of this year. Well there goes my 9 o’clock nightly timeslot. What the heck am I going to watch now? Reality TV? Ack! Well, the good news is that not watching the at-times heated debates should be good for shaving off a few points off my blood pressure. So you’re probably wondering if Sean Hannity finally got under Alan’s skin, he got tired of debating Sean and he quit as a result. Well, according to the newswires, it was an amicable departure.

Alan Colmes said, “I approached Bill Shine (FNC’s Senior Vice President of Programming) earlier this year about wanting to move on after 12 years to develop new and challenging ways to contribute to the growth of the network. Although it’s bittersweet to leave one of the longest marriages on cable news, I’m proud that both Sean (Hannity) and I remained unharmed after sitting side by side, night after night for so many years.”

Colmes will continue to have a presence on FNC as he will serve as a liberal commentator on a variety of FOX News programming, including Foxnews.com’s The Strategy Room and continue hosting his radio program, The Alan Colmes Show on FOX Talk, a division of FOX News Radio. He will also begin developing a weekend program.

celebrity-deathmatch.jpgIt’s too bad Alan couldn’t have the 9pm timeslot currently occupied by H&C, since then he′d be going against Rachel Maddow on MSNBC. It would be a lib-on-lib ratings deathmatch!

Shine said, “We’re very sorry to see Alan reach this decision but we understand his desire to seek other creative challenges in his career. We value his incredible hard work in making Hannity & Colmes the most successful debate program on cable news and we’re going to miss him on the show. Thankfully, he will begin developing a weekend pilot for us.”

FOX News Chairman &amp Chief Executive Officer Roger Ailes added, “Alan is one of the key reasons why FOX News has been such a remarkable success. We′re sad to see him leave the program but we look forward to his ongoing contributions to the network.”

Hannity & Colmes is the only FNC program which has remained in the same timeslot for 12 years, catapulting to number one in 2003 and never relinquishing the top spot. The second highest-rated program in cable news behind only The O’Reilly Factor, Hannity & Colmes averaged 3.3 million viewers nightly for the Nielsen month of October and is poised to mark 60 consecutive months at number one at the end of November.

Hannity added, “Not only has Alan been a remarkable co-host, he’s been a great friend which is rare in this industry — I’ll genuinely miss sparring with such a skillful debate partner.”

Throughout his 12 year tenure on Hannity &amp Colmes, Colmes has interviewed numerous key political figures, including: President Elect Barack Obama, Senator Hillary Clinton (D-NY), Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), Senator Ted Kennedy (D-MA), DNC Chairman Howard Dean and former Vice President Al Gore.

FOX News Channel (FNC) is a 24-hour general news service covering breaking news as well as political, entertainment and business news. For nearly seven years, FNC has been the most watched cable news channel in the nation. Owned by News Corp., FNC is available in more than 90 million homes.

Samsung CX-2233GW monitor impresses us with… nothing, actually

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

Filed under:

You think it’s impossible to have more fun than we already do at Engadget, and then Samsung goes and releases some new displays. Case in point: the CX-2233GW. This 22-inch LCD monitor boasts 1,680 x 1,050 resolution, 300 cd/m2 brightness, 1,000:1 contrast ratio (capable of being boosted to 20,000:1), five-millisecond response time and an HDCP-compliant DVI port. Sure, we’ve seen it all before in the SyncMaster line… perhaps we can count on major dip in the price? Stranger things have happened. The display will be available (soon!) in Korea for something under €200 (about $265).

Fujitsu’s Stylistic ST6010 Tablet PC stops by FCC, hangs out for awhile

Thursday, October 9th, 2008

Filed under:

Surely you recall that Stylistic S󎢼 tablet PC that quietly surfaced on Fujitsu-Siemens’ website late last month, right? Good. Now, do yourself a favor and check out what’s likely the US version of that: Fujitsu’s Stylistic ST6010. Said tablet has just dropped by the FCC’s database, complete with a user manual, an ID label, a litany of test reports and a collection of those heralded FCC photographs taken with what appears to be a 0.03-megapixel webcam from 2001. Unfortunately, the details we crave the most — finalized specifications, a price and a release date — are expectedly missing, but at least tablet lovers camped out in America can get amped up for this to arrive in short order.

Digital Foci ships new Image Moments 6 digiframe

Monday, October 6th, 2008

Given that Digital Foci’s IMT-062 was getting a bit long in the tooth, we’d say it’s about time a suitable successor hit the streets. The IMT-063, or “The Executive” as its known around the office, is the outfit’s very latest Image Moments 6 digiframe, which features a 5.7-inch 640 x 480 display, LED backlighting, a two-tone chrome finish, 450MB of internal storage space, support for a multitude of card formats and USB 2.0 connectivity. Better still, the frame will also play back audio and video files, and the auto-rotate orientation sensor will keep your curious youngsters occupied for hours. Look for this one to leave the shipping dock next week for $149.

Canon EOS 50D begins filtering out, gets previewed

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008

Filed under:

Official word says Canon’s EOS 50D DSLR isn’t shipping until October 6th, but we’ve found a number of pre-orderers that would beg to disagree. Take enthusiast Roland Lim for example, who has acquired a production unit and ran it through a series of basic, but entirely relevant tests. He’s admittedly leaving the “comprehensive technical review” to someone else, but his laundry list of impressions is quite stout. We’re told that the body is “essentially the same as the 40D,” with the buttons, dials and LCD in exactly the same spots. In the end, he attempts to answer the all-important “should I upgrade?” question thanks to this one being a mere evolutionary advancement of the 40D, he didn′t think it was all that compelling unless you were still rocking some seriously old kit. Hit the read link for the writeup and a plethora of sample shots to see if you agree.

HP’s gargantuan 18-inch HDX 18t laptop now available

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008

Filed under:

Don’t hold out on us — we know good and well you’ve been eying HP′s bigger than big HDX 18 ever since it got real last month. For those unable to resist the urge to find out what life’s like with an 18-inch entertainment notebook gracing their lap (and likely the lap of the guy one cube over), you can order this sucker up right now. Yep, the HDX 18t Premium series gets going at $1,549.99, but it won’t take too many configuration tweaks to push that figure well over the $2k mark. Have fun!

Takara Tomy’s wall-climbing AeroSpider RC car ships this month

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

We came for the car, we stayed for the promoter. Takara Tomy’s previously announced AeroSpider RC car, which mystically scales walls and cruises upside-down, is finally shipping this month in Japan. Cool though that may be, the real news here is the overgrown 4-year old used to show off just how amazing this minuscule vehicle truly is. Head on past the break to see what we mean — trust us, we wouldn’t lead you on like this for nothing.

[Thanks, Clyde]

BenQ’s 3G-enabled, Atom-powered MID Aries2 (S6) boots up in Italy

Friday, September 26th, 2008

Is it really time to shine, BenQ, or are you just foolin’ again? Judging by a product page at Italy’s TIM website and a fresh report from the Italian branch of Tom’s Hardware, the S6 (or MID Aries2, or BenQ MID… gosh, we’re so confused!) is finally ready to order. The Atom-based MID impresses with built-in 3G capabilities, 512MB of RAM, a 2GB SSD, 4.8-inch 800 x 480 resolution display, WiFi / Bluetooth 2.0 and — just to really pound the message home / incite jealously — 7.2Mbps HSDPA. The current asking price sits at €429 ($626), and while the value proposition may be debatable, the amount of possibilities packed into a frame this small (6.2- x 3.5- x 0.86-inches) definitely isn’t. Let’s get these out to other nooks and crannies of the wide world, eh BenQ?

Keepin’ it real fake, CXL: Cottage MP3 player apes iPod nano 4G a year in advance

Friday, September 12th, 2008

Why, this is downright preposterous! How dare the copyright-ignoring, astonishingly uncreative minds of those at Miao copy Apple’s latest iPod nano design a full year in advance? They should be implausibly embarrassed by churning out a so-called Cottage MP3 player in 2007, all while the brains at Cupertino sat and pondered how to make its tiny little PMP that much better. This, people, is an outrage. An outrage! (And a pretty good laugh, in all seriousness.)

Digital Foci’s Photo Safe II takes the load off of your flash card

Friday, July 18th, 2008

Digital Foci didn’t go out of its way to drastically redesign the original Photo Safe, but we ’spose that’s alright in the grand scheme of things. Essentially, the Photo Safe II picks up where its predecessor left off by including a multicard reader (now with 100% more MS Duo and miniSD support) which automatically transfers photos from your flash card onto the built-in 80GB / 160GB hard drive. The integrated display tells you at a glance how much space is remaining and how much battery life is left, though it won’t show your stored photos in slideshow (or any other) fashion. A touch steep at $139 (80GB) / $189 (160GB), but that’s convenience for you.

Fujitsu keeps HandyDrive portable HDD line alive with 500GB edition

Monday, July 14th, 2008

Filed under:

Father Time isn’t slowing things down anytime soon, so it’s good to see that Fujitsu is doing its best to keep up. Merely two months after taking the HandyDrive to 400GB, the firm has introduced an all new, totally marvelous 500GB iteration. Featuring the “world’s highest capacity 2.5-inch external hard disk drive (likely the MHZ2 BT),” this bus-powered unit hasn’t changed a bit in design, but it will hold a half-terabyte of information (in case you missed it the first go ‘round). Grab it later this month in Europe, the Middle East and Africa for €229 ($364).

Seagate Barracuda 7200.11: 1.5TB of love

Thursday, July 10th, 2008

Filed under:

You know, we’re not actually certain we want to trust 1.5TB of our precious precious NES ROMS invaluable work data to a single drive, but that doesn’t mean Seagate’s latest Barracuda isn’t droolworthy regardless. The jump from 1TB to 1.5TB is the ” largest capacity hard drive jump in the more than half-century history of hard drives,” according to Seagate, and the the perpendicular-recording drives should begin shipping in August. There are also a pair of Momentus 2.5-inch 500GB notebook drives coming in Q4 in 5400 and 7200RPM speeds, but like big brother, pricing is unavailable — we’ve got a hunch you might want to start saving those pennies, though.

[Thanks, Dave]

Hitachi introduces second-gen 1TB Deskstar 7K1000.B hard drive

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

Filed under:

Remember the day you drooled all over your keyboard when Hitachi introduced a 1TB internal hard drive? Yeah, like a year and a half ago? The outfit’s most recent HDD announcement isn′t likely to have nearly the same effect, but those who skipped the first-gen version in order to get a more refined product the second go ‘round will surely be delighted. Today marks the debut of the 1TB Deskstar 7򷖘.B, which goes down as “the world’s most energy-efficient 7,200RPM one-terabyte hard drive.” Said drive features a new three-disk design which improves idle power consumption up to 43% over its 1TB predecessor, but unfortunately, there’s no telling how long you’ll have to wait to actually buy this currently unpriced overlord of storage.
