We’ve been seeing in the wild shots of E-Lead’s Noahpad for months on end, but on some fateful trunk lid likely to be halfway across the planet, this undeniably peculiar UMPC has finally arrived to an end user. Oddly enough, said user couldn’t even wait to get the thing inside, and as you can clearly above, this unboxing took place entirely on the trunk of a car. We can’t determine what’s more interesting here — the unit itself, or the totally cute Baby In Car sticker just up there on the right.

This was the first time The Cable Show was back in the Big Easy since Katrina, and the first we’ve attended, too. For those unfamiliar, it’s the cable industry’s biggest event, and we certainly left with a new perspective on Big Cable. In case you missed what’s coming down the coax in the next year, here’s a rundown of our coverage.

Here’s a little story for you: An Apple Store employee had a party in her apartment. A couple weeks later her place was cleared out to the tune of about $5,000 worth of electronics, including her new Mac. Days later, a friend sees that she’s online and alerts the Mac’s rightful owner. Since she was running Leopard with Back to My Mac, owner-girl logged in remotely and activated Photo Booth via the screen-share function. And what do you know, it turned out that the thieves were some “friends” who were at the party a few weeks back. She took the photos to the cops and — voila — busted! The thieves, Edmon Shahikian, 23, and Ian Frias, 20, both of the Bronx, have been charged with second-degree burglary and fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property. Go go crafty nerdy girl!

Remember the first time you completed a full race on Super Mario Kart (frustrating finish and all)? If you’ve somehow let less important things push those blissful memories aside, take a glance at ryo007’s beautifully assembled papercraft set and see if doesn’t start to come back. This palm-sized kit features a detailed SNES console, a couple of controllers and a hollow version of Super Mario All-Stars. Best of all, the creator has hosted a template in order for you, closet SNES lover, to create your own. Finding where you put those scissors, however, may still be a challenge.

The oft-irrational quest for thin already overwhelming television R&D budgets just hit our beloved LCD monitors. Meet the BenQ V2400W billed as the “world’s slimmest 24-inch LCD monitor.” BenQ claims that the LCD’s 2.44-inch max depth is 21% thinner than any of its chubbier competition. Unfortunately, while BenQ happily drones on and on about the monitor’s B-2 stealth bomber inspired design, it remains tight-lipped on the specifications. We know it offers a 4,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, 2-ms response, touch control panel and selection of ports including HDMI, DVI and VGA inputs. However, the V2400W’s brightness, panel resolution or backlighting tech, color reproduction capabilities, HDCP support for that DVI jack, and something so trivial as price all remain closely held secrets. Nevertheless, it’ll be available at the end of this month in Asia then heading to North America and Europe in April. You know, if you can find it.

Ugh, we were already sick of digital photo frames — and now it looks those now-discontinued virus-ridden Insignia units from Best Buy and several other models produced in China were carrying a much nastier trojan that we’d originally heard. According to an analyst form Computer Associates, the trojan, called Mocmex, is able to block more than 100 types of security and anti-virus software from killing it, and bypasses the Windows firewall to download files from remote locations, spreading them randomly over your hard drive and any portable storage device you plug into your PC — like, for example, a digital photo frame. The trojan is apparently set to only steal gaming passwords at present, but CA says it’s capable of stealing nearly any information on your machine, and thinks it might be a test for a much worse virus yet to come. Infected frames have come from Sam’s Club, Target and Costco, in addition to Best Buy, so we’d say to avoid picking one up until this mess gets sorted out — or, you know, forever.

Good news, everyone! According to reports, a US spy satellite which has lost power and propulsion is weeks or even months away from striking Earth. Officials say that the space junk — which can now no longer be controlled and could contain hazardous materials — is due to come smashing into some location on our planet’s surface, but they can’t really say where. “Numerous satellites over the years have come out of orbit and fallen harmlessly. We are looking at potential options to mitigate any possible damage this satellite may cause,” said Gordon Johndroe, a spokesman for the Nation Security Council. Government agencies are still considering options such as shooting down the stray equipment, though they say they’d be just as happy to let the potentially radioactive / alien-filled hunk of metal crash into a small village in a developing country.

If microscopes like those from
Celestron are a bit more than you need, you may want to keep an eye out for JAKKS Pacific’s upcoming EyeClops BioniCam, which is obviously aimed at kids but, as we’ve seen in the past, will no doubt appeal to more adventuresome users out there as well. A follow-up to the company’s EyeClops Bionic Eye, this one ups the features considerably with the addition of an LCD screen, which you can use to peek at things at magnification levels of 100x, 200x or 400x. Also like that considerably higher-end Celestron, this one packs a built-in digital camera (no word on the resolution) and an included USB thumb drive to make transfers to a computer as easy as can be. No word on a price just yet, unfortunately, though you can look for it to hit stores sometime this fall.

When you’re the co-founder of Microsoft there’s always that nagging question of what to do with your millions billions. How ’bout bidding for some of that hot 700MHz action in the sweetspot of US spectrum? Seems that Paul Allen has filed to bid in the FCC auction with an entity called Vulcan Spectrum LLC — an investment company. Hint: Allen is also the majority shareholder of cable operator Charter Communications. Other notables on the list include Google and Verizon Wireless, naturally, as well as Qualcomm — protector of patents, MediaFLO mogul. It all goes down on January 24th when the bidding begins.
