AlertMe warns of energy vampires, kills them remotely

AlertMe alerts you of vampires, kills them remotely

In-home power consumption monitors are trendy pieces of kit lately, with a new one popping up every few months. But, while they’re all happy to just kick back and tell you what a wasteful pig you’re being, a new service from UK security company AlertMe could actually make you more efficient. Subscribers to the company’s monitoring plans, which start at about $260 plus another $17.50/month, will be able to purchase Smart Plugs for $43 each that can communicate wirelessly to an AlertMe Heating Controller. From there subscribers can monitor their energy usage online via computer or phone. That’s all standard stuff, but the service also includes keyfobs that will automatically turn down the heat and deactivate devices when you leave, and allows users to manually control the plugs and the thermostat by text message, meaning you’d never be more than a few thumb-presses (and a 20 cent service charge) away from a warm and inviting home.

Nissan’s Nuvu: electric, cartoonish

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008

Filed under:

Nissan’s Nuvu is making its debut this week at the Paris motor show, and while it isn’t the all-electric vehicle that the company has promised for 2010, it’s a step in the right direction. Resembling something from a Pixar movie, the Nuvu has that special mix of “vaguely futuristic” and “somewhat impractical” that we look for in a concept car: it’s less than ten feet long, seats three (un)comfortably and the space behind the driver is claimed by what looks like an end table with a conduit extending to the ceiling. Many of the cabin materials are either recycled or made from organic materials and since the vehicle is electric, it should be whisper quiet — offering maximum clarity for your Medeski, Martin and Wood CDs. More photos at the read link.

Nissan shows off bumblebee-inspired, crash-avoiding robot “car”

Monday, September 29th, 2008

Nissan’s already hard at work on some crash-avoidance systems for regular, human-driven cars, but it looks like it’s not stopping there, with it now also showing off its BR23C robotic “car,” which apparently takes its inspiration from the humble bumblebee. That comes in the form of the BR23C’s laser range finder (or LRF), which acts like a bee’s compound eye to detect obstacles up to two meters away within a 180-degree radius. When combined with the slightly mysterious crash avoidance system, that apparently lets the car react “instinctively” the split second it detects an obstacle and maneuver accordingly. Of course, as you can see above, Nissan doesn’t seem to be quite ready to test the system with any human passengers just yet, but the company has some big plans for the future, with it aiming to cut its rate of car crashes in half by 2015 compared to its stats from 1995.

Sharp’s cellphone prototype unlocks, starts your Nissan

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

In Japan, the hand can be used like a knife. Now, in another Japanese world’s first (according to Nissan), you can use your mobile phone to open and start your car thanks to a new twist-up of Nissan Motors, NTT DoCoMo, and Sharp. The Sharp prototype cellphone pictured above integrates with Nissan’s Intelligent Key system already fitted in various Nissan vehicles. Look for the device to be demonstrated on September 30th with the opening of the CEATEC Japan show. Hiiiiya!

ASUS Eee PC 901 falls to a cool $500

Monday, September 8th, 2008

Filed under:

For reasons unknown, netbook manufacturers (on the whole, at least) have been asking ridiculous sums of money for their wares, but now that the novelty of the sector is wearing off, we′re seeing those figures start to head south. Following in Acer’s footsteps, ASUS has evidently lowered the entry price for its Fine Ebony / Pearl White Eee PC 901 to $499.99. Yep, that’s the one with an 8.9-inch display, 1.6GHz Intel Atom CPU, 1GB of RAM, a 12GB SSD and a 6-cell battery. So, is that low enough for you, or are you waiting for the Buy 1 Get 1 offer that may never come?

[Thanks, Nathanael]

Dual-core Atom ready for showtime? Tranquil PC thinks so.

Monday, September 8th, 2008

Filed under:

Tranquil PC just announced two new products based around Intel’s upcoming Atom 330 dual-core processor, which Tranquil has confusingly dubbed the Atom2 Z330. We’ll find out soon enough who’s right in their terminology, but cheap-ass speed freaks have more exciting distinctions to worry about. The new processor has dual Atom wafers, for pretty much twice the fun, and Tranquil says that desktop performance is “very very snappy.” They’re celebrating the new processor with the T7-HSG Home Server, which will start shipping on September 30th in very limited supply for £299 (about $528 US). There’s also a DVB-T Media Center in the works, but we’re otherwise short on details.

Bacteria returns with “Mini-Platform” console mod

Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008

Filed under:

Console modder “Bacteria″ sure managed to turn a few heads with his previous multi-platform console mod, and he’s now done it again with his new so-called Mini-Platform Plug ‘n’ Play Console System, which boasts the same, uh, distinct look we’ve come to expect. At the moment, this one relies solely on a variety of TV plug ‘n’ play game systems for its gaming options, which Bacteria converted into a more convenient cart form, although he also promises to make a GBA add-on for the system “in due course.” As you can see in the video after the break, despite appearances, the system appears to work quite well, and you can even find step-by-step plans for building your own by hitting up the read link below.

Sony gets official with PSP-3000

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

It’s not like Sony could really keep this thing under wraps for much longer, but the company finally did the deed by announcing the PSP-3000 at the Leipzig Games Convention. The unit itself will look exactly like the PSP-2000, though it will feature an “improved screen that’s better outside with no glare and a built-in mic.” The juicy tidbits have yet to surface, but we are told to expect the new handheld in Europe for €199 ($291) on October 15th.

Oppo concepts foreshadow new gaming handhelds

Monday, July 21st, 2008

Generally speaking, Oppo has stuck to its bread-and-butter: decently stylish PMPs and a well-received family of upscaling DVD players, respectively. Now, however, we′re seeing a trio of concepts which allude to a future unit (or three) boasting gaming functionality. Unfortunately, details beyond that are few and far between, and we′re not even certain of their place of origin. In other words, don’t bet on seeing these hit shelves in the foreseeable future, but keep your fingers crossed that they do anyway.

Video: Samsung’s Soulful dinosaur takes tour around England

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

Filed under:

Remember that not-entirely-innocent looking prehistoric creature that won your heart immediately upon viewing Samsung’s optical illusion promotional vid? Apparently quite a few folks demanded to see more of the Soul dinosaur, so Sammy hoisted him up onto a truck and proceeded to drive around a few English towns. Catch the sub-2 minute journey (reactions included) just after the break.

Samsung Soul promo video shows 10 optical illusions in 136 seconds

Saturday, May 17th, 2008

Filed under:

We’ll be frank — we really have no idea what Samsung’s getting at with its freshest Soul promotional video, but it’s certainly a fine piece of eye candy if nothing else. Put simply, the video shows a maniac darting about demonstrating ten optical illusions in just over two minutes, and in case you couldn’t guess, the Soul is saved for last. Should we have prefaced that bit with a spoiler warning? Too bad — vid’s still waiting after the jump if you’re interested, though.

[Thanks, Joel]

ASUS P560 sports Windows Mobile 6.1, many acronyms

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

Buried underneath the hoopla surrounding the announcement of ASUS’ Lamborghini-branded ZX1 at CeBIT, the more mellow P560 was also announced, featuring pretty much every spec the average WinMo buyer could want these days in a package that speaks far, far less about the car you’re driving (or wish you were driving, anyway). HSDPA, WiFi, 3.2 megapixel autofocus cam, Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR, GPS, microSDHC slot, 256MB of ROM, 128MB of RAM, and Microsoft’s freshest build of Windows Mobile Professional — 6.1, that is — all have managed to find their way into the P560’s unassuming shell. Not bad, though the &euro500 (about $772) price tag could scare a few folks away when it launches next month.

HTC Touch Diamond soft keyboard comes to other WinMo phones

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008

Filed under:

We weren′t too thrilled with the Touch Diamond’s resistive touchscreen when we got a chance to play with HTC’s new hotness, but if you’re envious of that updated soft keyboard, you’re in luck: the Diamond’s ROMs have already been pulled apart and the .cab files are just a click away. Installation is said to be slow and you’ll have to jump through some hoops to switch the default language from Italian, but things will eventually work out for you — although we doubt anyone’s going to be nearly as impressed as if you had a real Touch Diamond.

MWg releasing Windows Mobile 7 gear before the year’s out?

Friday, May 9th, 2008

Not long after spinning off from former corporate parent O2, Windows Mobile purveyor MWg is moving out of its Asian comfort zone to attempt to sell its wares over in Europe with a splashy press conference to kick things off — and if the aggressive roadmap they′re pursuing for the next year or so holds true, they might just have a fighting chance at making a splash up there. First up are the official European intros of the Atom V and Zinc II, HSDPA-equipped handsets that have been kicking around for a while now, but that’s not even close to the interesting part. Looking deeper into ‘08 reveals a handful of HTC Diamond competitors, devices that are sporting a respectable 7.2Mbps down and 5.2Mbps up, and looking still deeper into the fourth quarter suggests that MWg intends to release its first Windows Mobile 7-powered device — the Flame II — with GPS, a 3.2 megapixel camera, and “multimedia features” on board. That seems a little far-fetched considering that 7 hasn’t been officially shown off and 6.1 isn’t even in broad distribution to users yet, but we appreciate MWg’s motivation here. We also see a Shift killer in the wings with Vista and a 3G data connection toward the end of the year, so all told, the future’s looking bright for these cats if they can actually execute.
