There’s really no denying it — T-Mobile’s G1 and Sony Ericsson’s XPERIA X1 are two of the hottest mobiles around right now, and as predicted, all sorts of sparks flew when the two sat down for a side-by-side photo session. In a Dutch comparison of the two handsets, reviewers pointed out that the ˇ was “significantly larger” than the SE counterpart, and while it’s completely subjective, they also asserted that the X1 was a “true piece of art in comparison to the dusty look of the ˇ [nice one, Google Translator].” Do yourself a favor and check out the whole thing in the read link.

Ah yes, the natural progression of a release. First comes the hands-on at the introduction, then comes the leaked user manual, then comes the pre-order fiasco — now, it’s time for those always titillating in the wild shots. The box and handset are nothing out of the ordinary / surprising (respectively), but at least you now know that bona fide unboxing images are just around the bend.

It’s going to be a few weeks yet until your unwashed hands are touching an actual G1, so how’d you like some reading material to pass the days in the meantime? T-Mobile has trotted out its first Android phone’s user’s manual — probably not on purpose, if we had to guess — and there are some interesting little morsels in there that′d be even more interesting if you actually had the phone in front of you. For example, did you know the ˇ had a status light? Don’t see those too often these days. You’ve also got a full rundown of the notification icons, apps (including the Android flavor of T-Mobile’s myFaves app), and — get this — procedure for battery removal. Fancy that! How many Google and HTC engineers does it take to build an Android phone? We don’t have the punchline to that one, exactly — but at least we have a pretty good idea of how long it takes. HTC’s Chief Marketing Officer has revealed that it kicked off negotiations with Google some five years ago — before it had even acquired Android, interestingly — and has been deeply embedded in the Android team for the past three years. That’s a long frickin′ time, but we figure the first model’s probably ten times harder to throw together than its successors are, so hopefully we′ll see a nice cadence of “HTC Innovation″ from here on out. We know it’s been said many times before, but it probably bears repeating: Touch Pro and Touch HD with Android, guys. Please.

T-Mobile, HTC and Google stood hand in hand yesterday to debut the first Android phone, the T-Mobile G1. It felt a bit like a new era for the mobile industry — though the rollerblading seemed a tad out of place — with high-profile companies backing a Linux-based, touch-driven mobile OS, and spouting the word “open″ every two sentences. But, naturally, high aims alone don′t build a killer phone; there are a lot details to get right, and a lot more that Google and company have seen fit to leave in the hands of developers. Let’s take a look at what’s working so far, and what might need some more time in the oven:

SightSpeed today announced that its video and voice communications software is now available on Linux-based “netbook″ (mini-notebook) PCs. Dell Video Chat powered by SightSpeed will come pre-installed on the Linux build of Dell’s newly-launched Inspiron Mini 9 device. Dell Video Chat, Windows version, is also pre-installed on the Windows XP version of the Mini 9. SightSpeed works on Macs, Windows, and now Linux and it is currently the the only multi-party video software to walk on all three major operating systems.
Dell pre-installs Ubuntu, a popular Linux distribution on the Mini 9, as well as Windows. With SightSpeed pre-installed as well on these popular Dell netbooks, Sightspeed will certainly increase the number of subscribers. In fact, Sightspeed has their software launch icon in a prime location, which will not doubt entice users to check it out. Another key advantage of Sightspeed is that it can do 4-way video and even 9-way video, while most competitors (i.e. Skype) are limited to just 2-way video.
SightSpeed informed me that a standalone installer for other Linux distributions is in the works, but for now if you want the Linux-version of SightSpeed, you’ll need to buy a Dell Mini 9 with Ubuntu.
“We know the specifications of the camera, speakers and microphones that are going into these new netbooks, and so we’ve optimized the factory version to take full advantage of them,” says SightSpeed CEO Peter Csathy. “As a result, SightSpeed’s best-in-class video and voice services have never been easier to use - the user is up, running and can make video and voice calls in less than 30 seconds.”

Italian Engadget readers, take note: Abaco Computers of Milan just announced the production of Europe’s ‘first′ Intel
Atom dual-core PC. Measuring up to a mere 27 x 20 x 10 cm (just under 11 x 8 x 4 inches) in the classic and classy “box” configuration, what appears to be a Betamax VCR at first glance is actually a reasonably stacked PC. The machine boasts a 1.6 GHz Atom CPU and up to 2GB RAM; oddly, the site says it sports a “generous” six USB ports, while the pictures clearly show only four and a single firewire jack (which they failed to mention altogether). The Abaco comes loaded with Ubuntu 8.04. Available in Desktop, Thin Client and Solid State flavors, according to your needs. Price varies by configuration, and needless to say, this isn’t available Stateside.

Palm keeps turning out really solid products, but never seems to be able to recapture the magic of the introduction of the first Palm Pilot.
Now, here’s a smart fruit phone (Apple, BlackBerry — get it?) alternative for you — the Palm 800w for Sprint.
H
ere’s what CNet had to say about it:
The good: The Palm Treo 800w brings the addition of Wi-Fi and GPS. The Windows Mobile 6.1 smartphone also offers EV-DO Rev. A support a higher resolution touch screen; a slimmer design; and a 2-megapixel camera.
The bad: The Treo 800w can be sluggish at times and call quality could be better. The QWERTY keyboard may also give users some problems.
Check it out at Palm.com.

We’re not sure if you check most mobile provider’s sites every ten minutes or so (like we do), but if you did, you would have noticed that the latest Palm Windows Mobile device — the Treo 800w — is available for purchase at Sprint’s online store. The phone, which features a 320 x 320 screen, EV-DO Rev. A, WiFi, and GPS, is currently listing for $249.99 after a $250 instant savings, $100 mail-in rebate, and two-year contract. So if you’ve been absolutely, positively dying to get your hands on this thing — now’s you chance.

Last we knew, a 436-page Treo 800w manual popped up from deep within the confines of Sprint. Fast forward a few days, and a few diehards are already trumpeting the receipt of their precious new Palm. Yep, that handset you see above is indeed the 800w, and if you care to ask some early adopters how things are going, feel free to hit the read link and surf on over to the forums.

Remember how we told you to expect some totally edge-of-your-seat, riveting price news in regard to Palm’s Centro? Yeah, how’s about $30 off? Presumably in conjunction with the iPhone 3G launch, AT&T has hacked the Palm Centro down to $70 after rebates (from $100) with a two-year agreement. There’s no telling if the new price will sashay on over to those CDMA carriers or not, but we’ve got our fingers crossed real tight.

Very rarely does a Palm handset go fully under the radar all the way through to the official announcement (if ever?), and now that we have a user’s manual, we can pretty much declare the impending Treo 800w fully, completely, and utterly scooped. This is definitely the real deal, too, coming straight off Sprint’s site — not to say anyone would go to the trouble of faking their own — and unveils no real surprises that we can see. The usual Windows Mobile 6.1 interface with Palm customizations, conservative styling (we′re being generous there), and typical array of Sprint add-ons like Sprint TV are going to make this a safe, easy choice for the well-starched suit in your life, and that’s about it. Not to say we have a problem with well-starched suits; Engadget corporate policy requires that we wear them at all times, actually. [Warning: PDF link]

So we heard from a very reliable source that mobile user interface guru Matias Duarte — who you may know as the man behind the Sidekick and Helio UI / user experiences — actually left Helio late last year to join up with Palm. Although no announcement was made, we hear he and his gang of designers jumped ship (well before Helio completely flooded) to take on the monumental task of designing the UI for Palm’s next-gen mobile OS (aka “Palm OS 2.0 or II“). His resume online now lists him as “Senior Director, Human Interface and User Experience″ doing “Something new…” since September 2007; we got in touch with Palm, who confirmed that he’s now under the company’s employ.
Of course, expectations should be pretty high — Palm’s only been promising this supposedly game-changing OS since around 2004, and the company’s reputation and pedigree is (or at least it used to be) in groundbreaking mobile UI design. But this news also kind of makes us wonder: if they didn’t have a killer UI and user experience team already in place and long-since working their asses off by late 2007, exactly how far along are they on this thing, anyway?

Palm continued to flaunt it’s almost inexplicable boost in health in an earnings call yesterday. According to reports, honcho Ed Colligan boasted of a 29 percent gain in smartphone sales year-over-year, largely in part to the stellar performance of the company’s budget-priced (with contract) Centro. In light of the recent negative outlook from investors, retail store closings, a constantly delayed OS update, and fierce competition, it’s a pretty impressive feat to not only stay afloat, but manage some small victories. Now if they can just deliver on those OS and device promises we keep hearing about, they may stay in this game yet.
