Vodafone demonstration video shows you how to use the BlackBerry Storm

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

Filed under:

Not that you really needed any additional instructions on how to operate the BlackBerry Storm, but just in case you′re a little slow on the uptake (or just want to be ultra-prepared come launch day), you′ll certainly want to direct your attention to the video after the break. Yeah, it’s a Vodafone Storm, so those looking for the typical Verizon garb will be a tad disoriented at first, but we’re sure it′ll be of assistance in the long run. Run along and study, kids — release day is, um, soon… ish.

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

Good news, PSP fans — the PlayStation Store is closer than ever to hitting your handheld, and we′ve got the video to prove it. Sony has hosted up a clip to give us all a better idea of what firmware 5.0 has in store for the PSP, and while there aren’t any real surprises, it’s always good to get a sneak peek. We’re told that users will soon be able to create an account and access the PlayStation Network right on the PlayStation Portable, and the PS Store access is the same as on the Ṕ. Enough chatter — give the video a look in the read link.

Video: XM Radio’s XMp3 interface shown off

Monday, October 13th, 2008

Filed under:

We knew XM Radio’s XMp3 handheld was on sale and shipping, but if you’ve been holding back and patiently waiting for some live video action of the UI before biting, have a gander at this. One xzitony managed to acquire the new Pioneer-built device and take it for a spin, but rather than just keeping it all to himself, he decided to host up a six minute clip walking us through the user interface. There are just no words to express our gratitude, but you can leave your thanks on his YouTube page after peeping the vid just past the break.

[Thanks, Anthony]

Nokia’s 5800 XpressMusic to mature markets: see you in 2009

Monday, October 6th, 2008

Filed under:

The Foundations said it best in their 1968 classic, but seriously, why let us down like this? Nokia didn’t mind busting out a litany of press shots and all the specifications one could need to get amped up about the 5800 XpressMusic, but it obviously has something holding it back from launching in “mature markets” before 2009. In an announcement that’s just as disappointing to the suits in Espoo as it is to those in North America and Down Under (just to name a couple), we’ve now learned that the touchscreen-dominated handset will only be available in seven countries in Asia, the Middle East and Europe before 2009 dawns. Even worse? Not knowing how deep into next year we’ll have to wait for this thing here in the US of A. Catch our feelings spelled out in video form after the break.

Nokia’s 5800 XpressMusic phone intimately detailed on video

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008

Filed under:

If you’ve been enjoying those still pictures of Nokia’s 5800 XpressMusic touchscreen phone, but feel you’re lacking an in-depth experience, we think we can help. A slew of demo and instruction videos have just been slapped up on the Ovi Share site, allowing you to get a better idea of just how the device works, and what it looks like when it’s doing it. Luckily for you, we’ve taken the trouble of including all of the videos after the break for your viewing pleasure, saving you the painful and laborious experience of hitting a read link. Enjoy.

The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008

While it may not be Nokia’s first touchscreen phone (anyone out there remember the 7710?), the 5800 XpressMusic is certainly the first to come out of Finland with a mainstream appeal. What we’ve alternately known as the “Tube” throughout much of its development cycle is the first production device to run S60 5th Edition — the fourth major overhaul of Nokia’s ubiquitous smartphone platform since 2002 and the first to support fingers, styli, and high-res displays. Speaking of high-res displays, the 5800 comes equipped with an impressive 3.2-inch 640 x 360 resistive touchscreen to go along with its 3.2-megapixel autofocus cam, Carl Zeiss optics, dual LED flash, GPS, WiFi, 3.5mm jack, and a microSD slot with support for 16GB cards. It’ll be available in three versions — European HSDPA, North American HSDPA, and GSM only — and ships this quarter in black, red, and blue for &euro279 (about $392) unlocked with an 8GB card thrown in for good measure. Music fans with voracious appetites for new tunes might want to hold out, though, for the Comes With Music-equipped version that follows on “early next year″ at a to-be-announced price.

Reuters: October 2nd is go for Nokia Tube launch

Friday, September 26th, 2008

Filed under:

October 2nd: mark it down ‘cause Reuters says that’s the date that Nokia will launch its Nokia Tube — aka, 5800 XpressMusic. According to a pair of industry sources, Nokia will launch the much anticipated, long overdue, S60 touchscreen device at a media and analyst event in London — exactly as Pocket-lint’s source told us earlier. All that’s left now is for the invites to be distributed.

Nokia 5800 Tube press shot leaks into the wilds

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

One day after Google goes touchscreen, along comes what looks to be an official press shot of Nokia’s 5800 XpressMusic — aka, the Tube. No new details here, though Nokia appears to have cleaned up the industrial design around the buttons of some of those earlier prototypes we’ve seen. October 2nd looks like the date that we’ll finally get our fill of the first S60 Touch handset. Though given the number of leaks and rabid competition Nokia faces in the touchscreen OS space — our appetite for this device might be quickly satiated.

ASUS points finger at Intel over lack of Eee PC 901s in the UK

Monday, July 14th, 2008

Filed under:

As if we needed any further developments to muddy the Eee PC waters, it seems that there’s a curious lack of Linux-based Eee PC 901s available at stores in the UK at the moment, and ASUS is apparently laying the blame squarely at Intel, not Microsoft. As Register Hardware points out, that word comes after some speculation that Microsoft may have pressured ASUS to push the Windows XP-based Eee PCs more heavily, but an ASUS spokesperson insists that the company produces Linux and XP-based systems in equal amounts. The spokesperson adds, however, that Intel hasn’t been able to supply enough Atom processors to allow ASUS to keep up its pace, which seems to suggest that the Linux-based 901s are harder to find simply because they’re sold out. It looks like folks in the UK won’t have to wait too much longer to get their Linux-fueled netbook fix, however, with some unspecified suppliers now pointing to increased availability in late July.

Eee PC 901 and 1000 to ship in US on July 8?

Friday, June 27th, 2008

Filed under:

We’ve gotten just about as much info on the Eee PC 901 and 1000 as we can handle, but we’ve been missing that most important piece of data until now: a US release date. That might be about to change, though, as ASUS’s pre-sales department has apparently been telling people that the 901 and 1000 will ship on July 8th. Of course, that’s not a firm commitment, and ship dates have been known to slip, but if you’ve been waiting to cold-cock that piggy bank, well, let the countdown begin.

Eee PC 901 dismantled, broadband solder points found

Eee PC 901 dismantled

ASUS’s Eee PC 901 has been unboxed, examined, pictured, tested, and now to end it all, it has been completely dismantled by a curious writer at bit-tech. They didn’t find anything terribly unusual, but highlights include a monitor-diameter 802.11n antenna, the all-important SSD module (not soldered to allow for upgrades), internal fan, an IDE3 slot, and solder points labeled “3GCard” which you can interpret as you wish (we’ll give you two guesses). Finally, they found a mysterious button that doesn’t seem to do much of anything. So there you have it: The Eee PC 901 has officially been pillaged. Hit the read link for some exposed silicon.

ASUS Eee PC 901 priced, reviewed

Friday, June 13th, 2008

Filed under:

We now have official US pricing for ASUS’ new Eee PC lineup. The Eee PC 901 nabs a $599 MSRP for both Linux and Windows XP versions. The pricing for the 1000 and 1000H models is a bit more fluid (read: could change) but is currently pegged at $699 for an Eee PC 1000 (Linux or Windows XP) and $649 for the Windows XP 1000H (H, as in hard disk drive). We’ll have to wait and see how that pricing works out for them with MSI’s $399 Wind coming later this summer (the $499 XP version in a few days) along side Acer’s $400 Aspire One. Oh, and then there’s that pesky Dell E-series said to be starting at $299 by the time they ship in August or September. For now you can check the full reviews, which, as you’d expect, see the evolutionary jumps made by the Eee PC 901 universally commended — especially the 6-cell, 6600mAh battery. Laptop managed to eek-out 4.38-hours (Stuff, well over 5-hours) of life with WiFi turned on — well short of the 7.8-hours listed by ASUS but much better than previous Eees. Both reviews share our concern: price.

Eee PC 901 gets unboxed and examined

Friday, June 6th, 2008

Filed under:

ASUS’s new Eee PC 901 has already gone before the cameras at Computex, but if you’re the type that’s just not satisfied ‘till you something unboxed you may want to head on over to Laptop Magazine, which has not only done the usual honors but provided a few initial impressions as well. On the whole, they seem to think it’s a worthwhile upgrade, with the extra keys across the top a particularly welcome addition, although they did have some slight problems with the keyboard, which they ultimately wound up prying off in order to fix. Hit up the link below for the full batch of pics.

Asus Eee PC 1000 vs Atom-based 901 vs original 701… fight!

Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008

Filed under:

var digg_url = ‘http://digg.com/hardware/Eee_PC_1000_vs_901_vs_701′;

There you have it, the hotly anticipated 10-inch Eee PC 1000 sized up next to the 8.9-inch Eee PC 901 (center) and original 7-inch Eee PC 701. Feeling. Misty.

Here’s the scoop from Engadget Chinese who just got out of the press briefing at Computex in Taipei:

  • New 6-cell battery offers up to 7.5-hours of battery for Eee PC 1000, 7.8-hours for 901, 7 hours for Eee PC 1000H
  • The “H″ in the Eee PC 1000(H) model means hard drive, yes, hard drive up to 80GB. A first for an Eee.
  • The Eee PC 1000 will max-out with a 40GB SSD
  • Fully equipped with 802.11n and Bluetooth — hoozah!
  • Intel’s Atom across the board

More pics the break.

Update: Detailed pricing and specs now in.
