HOW TO - Make LEGO gummies! SFHandyman writes…

I’m going to show you how to make gummy candies. I made a silicone candy mold from Legos. You don’t need to make a custom mold. There are many commercially available silicone molds, or you could just skip the mold completely and cut them with cookie cutters, a knife or even scissors.

Deep Blue costume

Sunday, November 9th, 2008

F0Iflu5Fn4H8Ovp

Deep Blue costume - one of my favorite costumes this year! Sponges writes-

Let me set the scene a bit: It’s the summer of 1997 and World champion chess player Gary Kasparaov has been beaten in a six game match by two wins to one with three draws . But not by another man. A machine, built by men, has beaten him. IBM’s Deep Blue could evaluate up 200 million positions per second, and capable of calculating 11.38 Gigaflops.

In honor of that stunning piece of engineering, I set out to make a suit, that, upon wearing it, I would be transformed into the most logical of logic machines ever built, a chess playing computer!

It is not a perfect replica, by any means; I took many artistic liberties. I was inspired by Deep Blue’s portrayal in S2E20 of Futurama, Anthology of Interest. It is rather the stylized idea of Deep Blue, the pop culture impressions of a thinking machine trapped in a big black box.

This costume took quite a bit of work, and erm, it was a bit on the more cumbersome side. But whose else has a mainframe costume? Incidentally, it was so cumbersome that It took me about 15 minutes to shove my way from one side of First Avenue to the other, missing the costume contest registration by just a few minutes. Once there I promptly put it in the coat check so I could breathe.

The frame of the costume is the remains of several cardboard boxes spliced together with duct tape, and the “thinking” lights on the front are controlled by the innards of about 27 little electronic dice, all wired together in a monstrous chain. Another set of lights scrolls back and forth over the speaker grille sorta like KITT, making the AI presence ever clearer. I added a pair of intake/outtake fans so I could breathe ever so slightly better inside, and finally a voice changing box to speak in a robot voice and say great classic things like, “Pitiful creature of meat and bone,” and “How about a nice game of chess.”

Look! Particles!

Friday, November 7th, 2008

Jenny @ Craft posted about these a while back - I think these plush particles would make great teaching tools.

WEIGHT: Particle weights vary according to their properties. The Higgs boson, top quark and W boson, for example, are the heaviest-they’re stuffed with polished gravel. The massless bosons are the lightest–they are stuffed with polyfill. The muon, a middleweight (very loosely speaking), is stuffed with poly beads. I tried to make the tachyon completely massless but I’m still waiting for him to return from the past (future?) to find out if it worked.

The Etsy Steam Team

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

[The Etsy Steam Team at the Steampunk Con (from left to right, by username: lilibat, PinkPeacock, nullalux, 19Moons, Choklit, OrpheusAlchemy, IndustrialFairytale, FaradayBags, and figments. Photo by Andrew/shoutingboy).]

I finally met members of the Etsy Steam Team at last week’s Steampunk Convention. As you may or may not know, Etsy (think: Amazon meets eBay at a craft’s fair) allows sellers to organize themselves into “teams” based on similar interests or product lines (to network, share promotion, skills, etc.). Obviously, the Steam Team is gathered around their mutual interest in making and selling steampunk and Victorian-inspired art and crafts. At the con, they offered everything from watchwork and church key jewelry to surreal antique assemblage, clockwork bugs, potion bottles and other alchemical chotsky. It was a wonderful and talented group of artists and crafters that I was glad to meet and with whom I hope to stay in touch.

Color-your-own Electoral College map

Monday, November 3rd, 2008

Elizabeth writes in -

When I was a kid, I remember using crayons on a map as the election returns came in, as we tallied the votes for each state. I wanted to do that again this year, so I mashed together a map and put it on flickr to share with my friends.

I put this together from a free map found at http://www.eduplace.com/ss/maps/usa.html, and the number of electoral votes for each state. You can watch the presidential election returns and keep track as they come in, or you can start coloring ahead of time as you imagine different scenarios.

The number of electoral college votes for each state is based on population figures from the 2000 census. There are 538 votes total. A majority of 270 is needed to win.

Happy coloring!

Make-y Halloween parties

Sunday, October 19th, 2008

We love to have craft parties for birthdays and holidays - both kids and adults seem to enjoy making something they can take home. Here’s a small roundup of Halloween crafts that are easy to do at parties.

KCEtsy has this great Halloween garland tutorial.

Small Object has instructions for ghost walkers and pose-able skeletons.

Lftndbt put together an Instructable for easy LED spiders.

Martha Stewart has a lot of free clip art for invitations, decorations, and crafts.

Her website also has a collection of ideas from her TV show, like these specimen jar candles and creepy head decorations made with doll heads and LEDs.

And, of course, Evil Mad Scientist has instructions for an itty bitty blinkie LED Jack o Lantern.
