Homebrew Multi-touch display

Sunday, October 5th, 2008

IDEO has a new lab blog that catalogs some of their projects and experiments, here’s a multi-touch display… They released the code for the FTIR server and the Flash API here if you want to check it out

At IDEO we’re all about building to think. Learning from books and websites and product demos is cool, but we think the really good stuff comes when you get in there and start messing around for real.

In the case of multi-touch interfaces, that meant building a system we could start prototyping on. What we wanted was:
-a multi-touch display large enough to facilitate use by several people at once
-an API for flash that would let us quickly prototype multi-touch interfaces and applications

It took us about 5 weeks to get everything together. Kyle, one of our all-around gearheads, had already been building a drafting-table-style FTIR system in his garage which helped kick-start us.

Artificially evolved walking organisms

Friday, October 3rd, 2008

The Darwin at Home project uses idle computer to distributively compute an algorithm that evolves ways of walking. The video of some of the successful “organisms” is entrancing. Next step: robots that walk like these? Via BB.

Custom wall mounted renderfarm

Fredrik Perman’s custom wall mounted renderfarm via .

This project was a ton of fun, and it proved to not only be very functional and convenient - it instantly sparked an interest by anyone walking though the design studio front entrance. We mounted the computer in the foyer. The server room was conveniently located on the opposite side of the wall. It was a home depot/computer parts puzzle, and a lot of fun! The fans blew all the hot air from the bottom and out the top. All 6 computers ran like a charm.

HOW TO - OS X on the MSI Wind

Monday, September 29th, 2008

Msimacosx
Wow, Jose @ Planetx64x has a nice step-by-step on installing Mac OS X on the super tiny MSI Wind, it’s a pockable Mac almost - via /.

Recently I’ve managed to install Apple’s OS X Leopard operating system 10.5.4 onto a 10 inch MSI Wind Netbook, and you can too. Let me preface this by saying that I consider myself an Apple fan, and run nothing but authentic Macs in my home studio office. If you’re looking for another Mac vs. PC debate, then there’s is nothing for you to see here. Move right along please.

The Victim: An MSI Wind U100 Netbook. This slick little machine comes preloaded with your choice of Windows or Linux. Armed with an Intel Atom 1.6 Ghz Processor, 1 GB RAM, 80 GB HD, built-in ethernet, wifi, webcam and bluetooth. That said, the most enticing feature is its crisp & clear 10 inch screen.

To accomplish this procedure, you will be opening the MSI netbook to upgrade the memory and swap out the factory wifi card (which will void your warranty). So think twice if you are not comfortable doing such a thing. We need to do this bacause having more memory always helps any operating system run snappier. OS X is no different. The MSI Wind takes up to 2 GB of RAM. More importantly the factory wifi card that it comes with, does not work in OS X out of the box. So you’ll need to acquire a Dell Broadcom DW 1390 or 1490 internal mini pci wifi card, which are both inherently supported in OS X.

I found both the 1 GB memory upgrade stick and a 1390 card on ebay for no more than $20 each. You’ll need a special Leopard build titled “MSI WINDos x86”, of which the Hackint0sh community should be credited for assembling. It’s a slipstreamed “Kalyway” build which includes all the proper Kexts, drivers, Kernel modifications, and other files necessary to achieve a fully working installation on the MSI wind. Please do not inquire about where to find this disk image, it’s in all the typical shady places on the net.

How To: Guitar/Mic Port on a PC

Monday, September 29th, 2008

F04T9TAFLM00TFL.MEDIUM.jpg
This is a very simple hack that allows you to plug a guitar or microphone into you computer. It can’t possibly cost more than a couple of dollars, and it shouldn’t take more than an hour to complete. You can buy external boxes that do this and a lot more, but that’s no fun!

Dell quad-core mobile workstation in the making

Friday, September 26th, 2008

dell-quad-core-laptop.jpg

Dell is all set to inject some serious adrenalin into the laptop market this fall by introducing its 17-inch quad-core “precision mobile workstation.” Brace yourself for the specs – 1-terrabyte dual HDD, quad-core processor, and an immense 16GB of memory with 1GB reserved for graphics. Enough for this beast to practically support up to two 30-inch external displays.

No further details are available at this point, except for the presence of a jog-shuttle controlling mechanism – all of which is in the sneak preview below. Want to know what’s additional on our wish list? Blu-Ray drive, subwoofer, extreme portability, and silent operation – not something that all Dell laptops are known for.

HP gets glitzy with the Vivienne Tam designed Digital Clutch

Friday, September 19th, 2008

vivienne-hp-netbook.jpg

Whether technology is seeping into the world of glamor or vice versa is for you to decide once you have had a look at the Digital Clutch Laptop designed by Vivienne Tam in collaboration with HP. Unveiled at the New York Fashion extravaganza, the ultra-chic HP Digital Clutch is in line with the flourishing HP 2133 Mini-Note, and is nothing short of a fashion model in itself.

From what we gather of the presentation aspects, the 10-inch netbook has a distinctly Oriental design – a flaming red outer case embellished with lovely pink and purple flowers. Even the “enter” key on the notebook bears the Chinese symbol for “double happiness”. Designer Tam says that her ideas behind this laptop are specially oriented towards creating the kind of “peace and tranquility that you get from being in a garden”.

Since little else is known about the other specs at this point of time, we hope that when the Digital Clutch shows up during Jan 2009, the intended double happiness comes to us in terms of both the specs and pricing.

Legomacpro

This spot-on LEGO Man enclosure sports 2 machines running OSX within -

Made out of 2,588 Lego bricks, the Mac Pro was designed in Lego Digital Designer 2.0 for the MacMod Challenge 2008. The Hackintosh is a plain PC with a Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4Ghz CPU running Mac OS X, while the Mac Mini is a Core Duo 1.66Ghz.

No report on how hot it gets inside the box but I’m guessing this must be one of the most ‘moddable’ cases ever. - Perfect Lego Mac Pro is two computers in one

HOW TO - ESD removal mouse

Wednesday, September 17th, 2008

Esd Mouse

A simple and helpful idea - David added a ground contact to his mouse.

I work a lot with ESD sensitive stuff - ICs, transistors and other devices. And that means - if I don’t wanna kill em all I need to discharge often - which is quite annoying. But I happen to work with a computer, and a standard input device - the mouse. Which gave me a nice idea - use the Ground connection of the mouse to discharge me.

Makes a lot of sense for those searching the web for datasheets and identifying ICs often. - ESD removal mouse

Old PCs make a sunset on the wall

Wednesday, September 17th, 2008

“Mauritian Sunset ” by UK-based artist Sandy Smith uses hundreds of obsolete PCs to create a wall-size gradient effect in order to mimic a “sunset” emanating from their monitors. Pretty cool effect as a way to bring the real into the “virtual” of sorts.

The Stiletto is a laptop stand with style

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

stilettostand1.jpg

Ya know, as I type this from my bed, I’m thinking it might be time to admit that an old upturned tray with a corner missing (where someone - not me! - dropped it on the floor and it cracked) might not be the best stand for my laptop after all.

This feeling was solidified by seeing something called the Stiletto Laptop stand. Inspired by the shoe (although not really looking very shoe-like, it has to be said) the Stiletto stand holds your laptop safe, and can also elevate it to your eye level. Even handier, there’s a space for papers and pens. Setting it up involves some self-assembly — but not the type that calls screws or glue guns into action (thank goodness). You can also have your name or logo engraved onto the stand for an extra charge, if you wish. It costs $48.50 excluding shipping from John’s Showroom on Ponoko.
