How Old Is Your Computer?

Friday, November 14th, 2008

pc_art_200h_20081114011245.jpgIt used to be that every three years, workers would get brand new computers from their businesses’ tech departments. But for many those days are over.

Many workers haven’t been issued a new computer in years.

The reason: Delaying computer upgrades is one of the easiest ways for a tech department to cut its budget. How about you working with a four-year-old ThinkPad with its maddeningly slow response times and out-of-date software …

Now that the economy has taken a pronounced turn for the worse, more businesses are deciding to delay their regularly scheduled PC buying. In fact, 46% of businesses have either already or plan to postpone purchasing new computers, according to a survey of information-technology execs by CIO Magazine.

That’s part of the reason that U.S. PC shipments will drop 1% in the fourth quarter compared to the year-ago quarter, according to research company IDC.

Now all of this bad corporate new has a shiny silver lining for us out here in consumer land –  PC makers are slashing prices, 20% to 30% in some cases, in an effort to boost demand.

Readers, how old is your work PC? Are outdated programs and hardware slowing you down?

Thanks to the Wall Street Journal (again).

ITAMI FiTrainer headset: it’s like a coach on your head

Saturday, October 25th, 2008

Remember that Body Trainer headset unveiled by Sega Toys earlier this year? If not, there’s hardly a better time to refresh your memory given that it’s coming to US soil via ITAMI. The rebadged FiTrainer comes equipped with a heart sensor and built-in one-liners to keep you going when your muscles are just dying to return to the couch. ITAMI also has the nerve to claim that “Wii Fit is history, while the FiTrainer is the future.” At any rate, the headset packs a trio of exercise modes — walking, jogging and aerobics — and by utilizing proprietary algorithms and subliminal encouragement from a variety of Pokémons, it tells you exactly how to exercise in order to “achieve maximum results.” We’re only told that the device is “coming soon,” but you can certainly procrastinate signing up to hear more so that you completely avoid ever bringing this nuisance / assistant into your life.

Angel and Devil earbuds may be a little too cute for Swedish death metal fans

Monday, October 20th, 2008

Filed under:

Something about the image above makes it seem that the folks over at Greenhouse are up to more than manufacturing electronics. The Angel & Devil earbuds (1,279 yen or $12.65) follow on the heels of the company’s Pigbuds (which now that we mention it, may also have some sort of occult significance). What can we say about these things? They fit in your ear, they′re available in one of five colors (the angel is always white, just like the Tom & Jerry cartoons — the devil can be summoned in red, purple, pink, magenta or death-dealing black), they ship with a display stand and they′re only available in Japan. And the struggle for your immortal soul continues…

Eco Media Revolution keeps the wind-up PMP alive

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

Just like gasoline-powered automobiles, the Li-ion-powered DAP is a fading gem. Okay, so maybe that’s grossly inaccurate, but at least it gives us a warm fuzzy feeling to think that Trevor Baylis’ Eco Media Player Revolution has a sizable budding fan base. The follow-up to the smashing Ecodigital wind-up PMP takes on a glossy black motif and features 4GB of built-in storage space, an SD card slot for capacity expansion, an FM tuner and support for a whole litany of audio / video formats. Best of all, you can connect your dead mobile to this thing, give it a few cranks, and boom — your cellie now has enough juice to make one very urgent call for more lunch money. Sure justifies the &pound129.99 ($241) asking price, huh?

Media Power CEO shows off new Android-based Gizmondo, looks just like old Gizmondo

Media Power CEO shows off new Gizmondo, looks just like old Gizmondo

The long-rumored resurrection of Gizmondo from the ashes of Stefan Eriksson’s bisected Ferrari Enzo is near. Near, that is, if you believe Rich Jenkins, CEO of Media Power, the company behind this rebirth. Jenkins recently showed Swedish journalist Hans Sandberg a box full of pre-production gaming handhelds, all looking suspiciously like old, decidedly post-production units. According to Jenkins the changes are all internal, consisting of new graphics hardware from nVidia and an uprated battery (to be offered as a free upgrade to scorned owners of the original). Pricing is still undetermined but Android is confirmed; owners will have to choose either Google’s new hotness or Microsoft’s decidedly more tepid Windows CE, but can’t have both — unless they buy two. Release is still set for the end of this year via a “really cool website” hitting the intertubes next month.

ASUS Eee PC 901 falls to a cool $500

Monday, September 8th, 2008

Filed under:

For reasons unknown, netbook manufacturers (on the whole, at least) have been asking ridiculous sums of money for their wares, but now that the novelty of the sector is wearing off, we′re seeing those figures start to head south. Following in Acer’s footsteps, ASUS has evidently lowered the entry price for its Fine Ebony / Pearl White Eee PC 901 to $499.99. Yep, that’s the one with an 8.9-inch display, 1.6GHz Intel Atom CPU, 1GB of RAM, a 12GB SSD and a 6-cell battery. So, is that low enough for you, or are you waiting for the Buy 1 Get 1 offer that may never come?

Dell looking to sell factories to increase profitability

Friday, September 5th, 2008

It looks like Dell is taking a rather drastic step to attempt to cut some of the costs that have been dragging it down in recent years, with The Wall Street Journal now reporting that the company plans to sell “most — and possibly all — of its factories″ within the next 18 months — if it can find some buyers, that is. As the paper notes, the factories were originally built to serve a PC market driven by corporate customers ordering large volumes of desktop PCs, but they’ve fast become a drag on the company as growth has shifted towards laptops sold at retail stores. While nothing is anywhere near official yet, the Journal pegs big contract manufacturers angling for a bigger piece of Dell’s business as the most likely buyers, although there’s a number of obstacles that could block such a sale, particularly when it comes to Dell’s factories in the US. Dell is also said to be considering simply closing down some of the factories, and instead rely on those aforementioned contract manufacturers to build its PCs. Hit up the link below for the full saga and backstory.

iPhone 3G accidentally snaps photo in factory, reveals long lost siblings

Monday, July 28th, 2008

Filed under:

Unless you hit the jackpot at an Apple Store, you aren’t apt to see this many iPhone 3Gs in one place without planning a meetup. As the story goes, one particular lady picked up one of Apple’s latest handsets, took it home and began checking things out. Curiously, a trio of images were already on the Camera Roll. Upon viewing them, she noticed two snaps overcome with blur and the one you see above — likely a rare look into an iPhone 3G factory. Not that we haven’t see Apple products give away their place of origin before, but still interesting nonetheless. Now, scurry along and check out your own roll to see if any hidden treasures are waiting.

Inside, Really Inside the Lego Factory

Monday, July 21st, 2008

Anybody want to guess how many Lego bricks are made every year?

How about a clue? Let’s say more than 50 million a day?

Sounds like a lot. And yes it is! To the tune of 19 billion every year. Yes, 19 billion of those little bricks that can build just about anything — from castles and spaceships to monster and robots.

legotrip.jpg Now Gizmodo is giving us a chance to take a video tour of the factory that makes all of this stuff.

Get this part: “While the storage areas are the most impressive part of the factory, I have to admit that nothing had prepared me for the scope and complexity that is required to make and pack 19 billion bricks every year. The scale of this factory, specially compared to the tiny bricks it produces, is absolutely breathtaking.”

Need I say more – check it out.

Keepin’ it real fake, part CXXV: Touch Diamond gets aped sans luster

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

Filed under:

Not that we′d view the actual Touch Diamond as IF or anything, but the Diamond J6 is more along the lines of I3. In all seriousness, this thing isn’t too far from being spot-on identical (maybe it’s an HTC thing?), with a 2.8-inch display, built-in camera, multimedia player, Bluetooth and a microSD card slot. And for $160, we’re almost inclined to fall in love here… almost.

Keepin’ it real fake, part CXXIII: the Wiimote candy dispenser

Sunday, July 6th, 2008

Filed under:

According to the reader who sent this our way, this candy dispenser looks “exactly” like a Wiimote, except it fires candy out of the spot where the IR transmitter should be. Apparently the instructions suggest that you “Do not aim at face,” so… it’s kind of like the real thing.

Keepin’ it real fake, part CXIX: PNP just can’t hang with the PSP

Monday, May 19th, 2008

Straight from the “spotted at the mall” files, one eagle-eyed tipster has shared a picture snapped at a local shopping venue where the presumably astounding PNP was being kept under lock and key. This marvel boasts the iconic PSP shape, obligatory D-pad, dedicated On / Off button (let’s see your Sony do that… in this manner) and four puzzling buttons to the right of the “display” mounted in the middle. Yeah, it was only being sold for around $10, but you’d have to slip a Hamilton in our pocket before we’d mar our collection with this filth.

[Thanks, Enrique]

Teclast T50 PMP reviewed on video, shows off totally aped UI

Monday, May 19th, 2008

We’ll admit, we had our suspicions that Teclast’s capacitive multitouch-packing T50 would arrive with an eerily similar user interface to some other device out there, and a ten minute video review recently tossed up by MP4Nation thoroughly confirms those fears. In all seriousness, this thing may actually not be a half bad unit, but whether or not you’re really interested in such an impostor, it’s worth checking the video after the jump for laughs alone.

[Thanks, Edwin]

XNA Game Studio preview with Zune games now out

Thursday, May 8th, 2008

Well, that was fast, the XNA community technology preview with Zune games we were just talking about is already out. Unless you’re a developer ready to get your hands a little dirty it won’t be of much use though, especially since games can only be distributed and installed from source code right now.

Zune XNA games preview release aimed for May

Monday, May 5th, 2008

Microsoft’s still isn′t solid on a final consumer release date for XNA games for the Zune, but they are aiming for the first CTP (community technology preview) to be released in May. We also learned that Zune games can support ad-hoc wireless play with up to eight players, the devices won′t support any hardware 3D acceleration, the “16MB for storing games” we heard before actually refers to how much Zune RAM games can take over, and Microsoft’s got at least four games running on the platform (which may or may not ever be released to the public): Zauri (which we’ve already seen — video after the break), as well as Hexic, Potato Chase, and Alien Takeover.
