For whatever reason, toasters are redesigned entirely more often than most any other kitchen gadget, but the Trapdoor Toaster may actually be an alternative worth checking out. First off, the item you see above is no concept — as a matter of fact, it’s available for purchase right now at Hammacher Schlemmer. Essentially, this thing inhales bread, bagels and frozen waffles, toasts ‘em to your preferred level of brown / black and then shoots them out below onto a serving tray. Sadly, this removes that iconic eject function that makes traditional toasters so fun to watch, but it does prevent you from scalding your fingertips as you try to dig out slices from the fiery slots. Novel? You bet. Worth the $79.95 asking price? Not on your life.

Utilizing big honkin’ displays for advertising purposes is nothing new, but East Japan Railway Company (JR East) and East Japan Marketing & Communications have decided to try “digital posters″ out for reference. In short, ten 65-inch Sharp PN655R LCDs have been installed within “the internal concourse on the first floor of Tokyo Station’s Yaesu South Entrance,” and folks who stroll by can get a glimpse of whatever (the image changes each minute) in stunning 1080p. The goal here, as you might imagine, is to “evaluate the advertising effects of still image ad posters using large LCD panels displayed in a relatively busy gateway.” If you’re anxious to lay your eyes on the installation, you’d better hurry, as there′s no guarantee that they′ll remain after September. At least the video posted after the jump is forever.

Never mind those guys cranking out just one or two new gizmos at InfoComm — Sharp’s busting out the big guns. The company is using the stage in Vegas to introduce a swarm of new gear including the XG-W 3-chip DLP WXGA projector, XG-C455W / PG-C355W 3LCD WXGA PJs, XG-X XGA unit and four new BrilliantColor DLP beamers (PG-F317X, PG-F312X, PG-F262X and PG-F212X). For those unfazed, it’s also showcasing 46- (TL-M4600) and 52-inch (TL-M5200) professional LCD monitors meant for digital signage applications. As you can probably glean, there’s way too much data on the whole lot to cover in this space, so we’ll kindly direct you to the read link if you’re hungry for more.

It’s no nightmare — 3D is officially in style. Or it’s succeeding in fooling us, one or the other. Further proof that taking things to the third-dimension is all the rage has arrived courtesy of Philips, who has announced its intentions to reveal a 1080p 52-inch 3D display at InfoComm later this month. The unit will utilize the same WOWvx technology showcased a year prior in its 20-inch display, and will feature 700 cd/ф brightness, a 2,000:1 contrast ratio and an 8-millisecond response time. The auto-stereoscopic display should be “commercially available from Q4 2008 onwards,” but we haven’t a clue how costly it’ll be when it eventually lands.

Though not the first stretched display we’ve seen per se, LG is taking widescreen to an entirely new plateau with its latest duo of monitors. Launched today in the UK, the 38-inch M3800S-BN and 29-inch M2900S-BN feature oddball resolutions like 1,366 x 398 and 1,366 x 480 (respectively) along with a 1,000:1 contrast ratio, 9-millisecond response time and a VGA input. Obviously geared for digital signage applications, both units can display imagery horizontally or vertically, and while price points weren’t disclosed, we’ll go ahead and assume that they’ll be pegged for purchase on those business-centric credit cards (if you catch our drift).

Just like a George Orwell flick gone awry, OMDM’s movable E-ᵾ II LED display is downright frightening. The gargantuan display is basically one with a car, and it comes complete with built-in speakers to really get the message across. We can hear it now: “Please deposit your mobile communication devices here, telepathy is the new unlimited plan.” Yikes.

NewYorkCountryLawyer writes “At Fordham Law School’s annual IP Law Conference this year, Slashdot member NewYorkCountryLawyer had a chance to square off with Kenneth Doroshow, a Senior Vice President of the RIAA, over the subject of copyright statutory damages. Doroshow thought the Jammie Thomas verdict of $222,000 was okay, since he said, Ms. Thomas might have distributed 10 million unauthorized copies. NYCL, on the other hand, who has previously derided the $9250-per-song file verdict as ‘one of the most irrational things [he has] ever seen in [his] life in the law’, stated at the Fordham conference that the verdict had made the United States ‘a laughingstock throughout the world’. An Australian professor on the panel said ‘The comment has been made a few times that America is out of whack and you are a laughingstock in the rest of the world. As the only non-American on the panel, that’s true. We do see the cases like Thomas in our newspapers, and we think: “Wow, those crazy Americans, what are they up to now?” This whole notion of statutory damages is not something that we have within our Copyright Act. You actually have to be able to prove damage for you to be able to be compensated for that.’ NYCL also got to debate the ‘making available’ issue, saying that there was no ‘making available’ right in US copyright law, despite the insistence of the program’s moderator, the ‘keynote’ speaker, and a ‘majority vote’ of the audience that there was such a right. The next day 2 decisions came down, and a month later yet another decision came down, all rejecting the ‘making available’ theory.”

arbitraryaardvark writes “Mega-spammer Jeremy Jaynes was convicted in Virginia of spamming in ‘05, sentenced to 9 years, and lost his appeal, 4-3, at the Virgina Supreme Court. But the court has just ordered a new hearing on whether the anti-spam statute is unconstitutional under the First Amendment. Slashdot previously covered the appeal and the conviction.”

superglaze writes “Halfway through the two-month window of opportunity during which OOXML’s ISO standardization can be derailed by a formal objection from a national standards body, the UK Unix Users Group is trying to force the British Standards Institution to do just that. According to the Unix Users Group, the BSI used a flawed decision-making process when they chose to approve OOXML in the ISO vote. ‘The UKUUG is also folding in many other complaints about Office Open XML (OOXML), such as unresolved patent issues and a lack of completion in the specification’s documentation, and is calling for the High Court of Justice to force a judicial review of the BSI’s decision.’ This is not the first time a country’s ISO vote has been challenged.”

I Don’t Believe in Imaginary Property writes “The Pro-IP Act has passed the Judiciary Committee unanimously, thanks to the support of committee chairman Rep. John Conyers (D-MI). We′ve discussed this before &mdash it’s the same bill which would create copyright cops with the power to seize computers, when powers like that have been systematically abused in other areas. But, apparently, they think the bill is just wonderful now, simply because they cut the provision that would’ve increased statutory damages while keeping the rest. This is the same bill that William Patry called the ‘most outrageously gluttonous IP bill ever introduced in the US.’” While we′re on the subject of intellectual property, Canadian law professor Michael Geist gave a talk on Monday about ‘copyright myths.’
