Wi-Fi wireless Internet connectivity has become nearly ubiquitous.
Whether you’re at home, in a coffee shop or even on some commercial airliners, you can get online with a Wi-Fi-equipped laptop, smart phone or portable game machine.
Now, Wi-Fi is making its way into your car.
A small California company, Autonet Mobile, has teamed up with Chrysler and others to sell a service that floods any brand or model of car or truck with Wi-Fi Internet connectivity that can be used by multiple passengers and devices simultaneously.
It’s a dealer-installed option on Chrysler vehicles, but Chrysler dealers, and some independent auto electronic shops, will install it on any brand of car for a fee.
Does this make Chrysler more appealing to GM?
More at the Wall Street Journal.

HP’s bringing a little fiesta to the green game this morning, announcing the new Energy Star-qualified Pavilion Verde a6645f (pictured) and the Pavilion Phoenix Special Edition a6655f desktops along with the new w2558c 25.5-inch display. Both the $579 Circuit City-exclusive Verde and $659 Best Buy-exclusive Phoenix claim a 45-percent energy savings over traditional PCs and sport 5GB of RAM, a LightScribe dual-layer burner, and Vista Home Premium, but the Phoenix is the hotrod of the pair, packing an AMD Phenom ʹ 9150e quad-core processor over the Verdes’ Athlon Ͳ 4850e dual-core unit. The w2558 display seems nice and flexible, with HDMI inputs, a 15-in-1 card reader, 2.0 megapixel webcam and multiple USB ports, but we’ll wait for specs a little more detailed than “fast” response time and “high” brightness before we plunk down our $599. Both machines should hit their respective big-box stores on November 9th, and the display should be out now — check it out after the break.

Since we heard those “Brick” rumors the other day, the mill has been all but silent… until now. It’s hard to tell exactly what we’re looking at here, but damned if this doesn’t look like some fancy new MacBook Pro carved out of a single piece of metal. We’ll let you make your own decisions after giving this the once over, but if this is what Apple has in store for us, our curiosity is definitely piqued.

Honda’s been trying for months now to convince you that “the van is back in style,” and while we’re still not entirely sure that line isn’t just marketing hoopla (okay, it is), at least the company is working to make the thing more technologically advanced. Starting next month in Japan, the automaker will debut a multi-view camera system for its Odyssey minivan, which will utilize the same 360-degree overhead cam tech that Nissan picked up last year. The system will give drivers the ability to see more as they prepare to back out, and the biggest boon is the ability to view ninjas adhered to parking garage ceilings prior to opening the sunroof and facing The Reaper. Unfortunately, there’s no word on when it’ll be available in other corners of the globe, but we’d guess 2009 if we had a Katana put to our throat.

On Friday, ASUS announced its latest entry into the highly competitive and exciting world of tweaked Windows Mobile phones, with the introduction of the P552w. The full-touchscreen device boasts a speedy 624MHz CPU, a 240 x 320 QVGA display, HSDPA / UMTS radios, 802.11b/g WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth 2.0 (with A2DP), 256MB of flash memory, 128MB of DDR, plus support for microSD / SDHC cards. What’s really of note, however, is the inclusion of a skinned UI utilizing a technology called “Gester,” which is controlled via slides of the finger, pinching, and flicks (think HTC’s TouchFlo). The company is tacking on a few pieces of proprietary software as well, such as “EziPhoto” and “EziMusic,” and claims that the device has “seamless Google integration.” Clearly ASUS has backed away from that 3D interface we saw at Mobile World Congress this year, though we suspect the new UI — dubbed “Glide” — bears more than a passing resemblance to it. No word yet on release dates or prices, but you’ll know when we do.

You know what’s cool, right? Big, luxurious, fast cars. Those are cool. And then, you know, when you put a car logo on a laptop, and maybe a bit of leather upholstery? You’re bordering on seriously cool levels, people. Take it from us, we know. Ego’s been making luxury laptops of questionable taste and shape for a couple years now, and seems to have finally met the “alright, I guess″ mark with its Bentley laptops. Complete with cross-over hand-stitching, a seemingly transplanted car door handle, and a few crappy specs, the laptop is most certainly not worth the £10,000 ($19,943 US) asking price. They go on sale this summer.

AMD has been hinting at its plans to take on Intel’s processor du jour, the Atom, for some time now, but brand new CEO Dirk Meyer is now getting slightly more official about it than the company has been previously, and he’s promising that AMD will reveal all come November. As the folks at Register Hardware point out, all indications point to that Atom-challenging processor being the “Bobcat,” which has been talked about for nearly a full year now. If that past information is correct, it looks like we can expect the chip to debut with a 1GHz clock speed, along with 128KB of L1 cache, 256KB of L2 cache an 800MHz HyperTransport link, support for 400MHz DDR 2 RAM, and a power consumption 8W. No word on how AMD plans to compete with Intel in terms of price just yet, but that’ll no doubt be revealed in November, if not sooner.

Barence writes to mention that after seeing almost $1.2 billion in second quarter losses, AMD’s CEO has resigned. Stepping up to fill his shoes will be Dirk Meyer, previous company president and COO. “Only two years ago, the company held a processor performance lead and was making serious inroads into Intel’s market. However, AMD failed to keep pace with Intel’s Core technology, and it once again surrendered its performance crown at the dawn of the multicore era. Those problems were exacerbated by the bungled launch of the Barcelona processors, which prompted Ruiz to make a frank public apology last December.”

Well, no wonder Hector Ruiz quit as the CEO of AMD earlier today — the chipmaker just announced its second quarter results, and they’re not good. In addition to an overall $269M operating loss, the company is taking an $876M charge against the purchase of ATI so it can abandon the handheld graphics and digital TV markets. To be honest, we hadn′t been hearing much about ATI’s plans in those areas, so it’s probably for the best the company is focusing on getting Barcelona out the door after the launch of Puma — but we doubt much is going to happen with a power vacuum at the top and a bottom line that’s bleeding red.

Don’t say the writing wasn’t already littering the walls, because it was. Just months after AMD hacked its workforce by 10% and let its CTO walk away without being replaced, the company’s second CEO after Jerry Sanders has spent his last day in AMD’s biggest corner office. Hector Ruiz has decided to walk away from his role in the flagging outfit, leaving his right hand man (that would be Dirk Meyer) to take over whatever there is to take over. Of note, Mr. Ruiz will still have ties with the company as he remains on its board of directors as “executive chairman,” though it’s hard to say how much influence he’ll have from there. Really though, what’s next?

Choosing the right graphics card / chipset combo to give you the most bang for the buck is always tricky business, and even moreso when you’re looking to get the most out of some brand new hardware like AMD’s
Radeon HD 4000 series cards. Thankfully, the folks at Legion Hardware have now stepped in to help out a bit, although, as is often the case, it’s not entirely a clear cut choice. If it’s a bargain you′re looking for though (relatively speaking), it seems like pairing an ASUS P45 motherboard with a couple of Radeon HD 4850 graphics cards (for a total of about $550) will give you enough performance to impress all but the most demanding gamer. If you want to push those benchmarks as far as possible, however, you′ll have to go up to an ASUS ⊐ board, although even the folks at Legion Hardware question whether the mere 5% performance gain is worth the extra cost. If you want to make your own decision though, you can hit up the link below and dig through the numbers yourself.

AMD’s ATI Radeon HD 4870 has been a bit of a
mystery since word of the card first
leaked out alongside the slightly lower-end Radeon HD 4850, but it looks like things are finally clearing up, with AMD itself first
getting official about the card and the first hands-on previews of the card now turning up. As [H] Enthusiast reports, it looks like this one was well worth the wait, with it saying that its gameplay experiences with the card were “phenomenal.” That includes being able to play Crysis at 1920 with all in-game settings cranked to “high” — a recipe for disaster on most cards, but apparently more than playable on the 4870 X2 (with some other suitably high end hardware to match, of course). What’s more, the site says the card’s performance could get even better by the time it’s offically released, as its test card was using a beta firmware that still leaves some room for improvement. Until then, you can hit up the link below for all the current numbers.

Eran Badit of NGOHQ.com has already made some considerable progress getting PhysX to run on AMD hardware, and it looks like he’s now getting a helping hand from a somewhat unexpected source, with NVIDIA itself reportedly giving the project its blessing. Apparently, NVIDIA has even gone so far as to invite Badit to join its developer program, which gives him access to documentation, SDKs and, most importantly, direct access to hardware and NVIDIA engineers, a move that Badit describes as “impressive, inspiring and motivating.” Badit is decidedly less impressed by AMD, however, which has apparently been unwilling to provide with any hardware or support for the project. That stubborn stance, he surmises, can only be due to AMD’s backing of Intel’s Havok physics engine, which NVIDIA would no doubt like to have out of the picture (hence its willingness to help here).

HP has already busted out a bundle of Puma-based
laptops and
tablets, but it looks like it’s not done with AMD’s latest platform just yet, with it now rolling out a pair of new Compaq laptops aimed at business users. Those include the 15.4-inch Compaq 6735b and the 14.1-inch 6535b, each of which will come loaded with your choice of AMD Turion X2, X2 Ultra, or Athlon X2 processors, along with ATI Radeon HD 3200 graphics, support for up to 8GB of RAM (though only 2GB and 3GB options are configurable from HP), a max 160GB hard drive, and an optional second hard drive in place of the DVD burner if you so choose. You can also expect a WXGA resolution on each, with WSXGA+ also availabe on the 15.4-inch model and WXGA+ an option on the 14.1-inch (both have both BrightView and anti-glare options, as well). From the looks of it, you can get your hands on either one right now, with the base configuration for each setting you back $779.
