iTunes movie rental fire gets a poke: Warner Bros, Fox, Disney, Paramount and Lions Gate all on board?

Wednesday, January 9th, 2008

Rumors have been swirling that Apple will be offering movie rentals over iTunes for weeks now. Now it would appear that Warner Bros have joined Disney, Twentieth Century Fox, Lions Gate and Paramount in the initial launch. This, according to sources speaking anonymously to Bloomberg. The announcement is expected to be made on January 15th according to the report, presumably during Jobs’ MacWorld keynote. Both new releases and older titles will rent for $3.99 for 24 hours. Bloomberg’s sources also indicate that Fox may join as a supplier of movie downloads. While the details may change, an iTunes rental service announcement on Tuesday seems a near certainty given the recent multi-source, confluence of data.

Is AIBO returning from the dead?

Sunday, December 9th, 2007

You heard that right, folks. Supposedly, Aibo is back… with a vengence. According to rumors, the fiesty-but-killed robo-dog from Sony is making a comeback with a new paintjob and whole slew of fresh features. First and foremost, the re-upped model will be tailored to interface wirelessly with your PSP and PS3, will have a built in headcam which utilizes a motion sensor and facial recognition, and can stream its POV video over WiFi to your system. In addition, you’ll apparently get to remotely trigger the bot with your handheld and control its movements, plus you can set it to “guard” your house (though we’re pretty sure most enterprising burglars will just turn the little dude on its side if provoked). Of course, right now this is speculation (Stuff Magazine gives the rumored bot a 53-percent chance of becoming a reality), but there certainly seems to be some meat behind these murmurs. C’mon Sony — the pup deserves a second chance.

Intel’s QX9770 quad-core to blow away competition in Q1

Monday, November 19th, 2007

Want to see what AMD is up against come Q1? You’re looking at it, the 3.2GHz, quad-core, QX9770 Core 2 Extreme processor from Intel. Like Intel’s current headliner — the QX9650 — we’re talking 45-nm Yorkfield class silicon here with 1600Hz front side bus and 12MB L2 cache. HotHardware got their hands on the proc a bit early and call it the fastest quad-core processor they’ve ever tested, “bar none.” Generally speaking, they found it to be about 5 - 8% faster than the QX9650. As you can see from the graph up there, it easily smokes the $300 Phenom 9700 and the $350 2.6GHz Phenom 9900 (both due in Q1) likely won’t fare much better. Just keep in mind that Intel’s top-performer will cost you around $1,200 by the time it pops in Q1. Somehow, we don’t think that’s going dissuade any Crysis gamers out there.
